European Border Breakers Chart 16 June 2017
From the 14 entries in this week’s European Border Breakers Chart, 10 have been in the list before. Apparently, the European radio stations monitored played a lot of recurrents last week 😉 .
The highest brand new track, at #67, is Came Here For Love by Sigala & Ella Eyre (real names: Bruce Fielder & Ella McMahon; pictured). The other first-timers are: Praying by Tom Grennan (#96), Love’s A Stranger by Warhaus (#98) and Volare by Fabio Rovazzi feat. Gianni Morandi (#99).
For more new tracks that were never in the Top 100 before, I recommend our tip list, the Bubbling Under chart.
For all 100 positions in our main chart, click the ‘EBBChart’ tab in the top menu of this blog (loading of the PDF may take a little while). For more charts (like the Bubbling Under), please visit www.europeanborderbreakerschart.eu.

Fabri Fibra feat. Thegiornalisti – Pamplona
Italian rapper Fabri Fibra, who goes by the real name of Fabrizio Tarducci, fronted several rap crews before releasing his solo debut album Turbe Giovanili in 2002.
Earlier this year his ninth studio album Fenomeno saw the light. Thanks to prominent use of the trombone, the new single Pamplona, on which he collaborates with Italian pop/rock band Thegiornalisti, has a jazzy feel. Not much unlike one of the best songs of 2015: Closer by Lemaitre feat. Jennie A.
A potential summer anthem, as far as I’m concerned…

Kadebostany – Mind If I Stay
Kadebostany are a band from the imaginary European ‘Republic of Kadebostany’. In fact, they are from Switzerland, but their catchy pop tunes do have an Eastern-European twist. If it would have been up to me, their 2013 album – appropriately named Pop Collection – would have propelled them into worldwide stardom the following year. It never happened. Not even after The Avener reworked Castle In The Snow, off said album.
In 2017, Kadebostany get a new chance. With three new singers who replace former front woman Amina and a new album, Soldiers Of Love, coming up. But first there is a new EP, Monumental – Chapter I. Mind If I Stay is the lead track. It is sung by Kristina, but to make things a little bit complicated, the lyrics were written by Amina.

Tiggs Da Author – Fragile
Tiggs Da Author was born in Tanzania, but moved to London at a young age. The subsequent culture clash made him an allrounder, who is able to melt African jazz, Dizzee Rascal-like hip hop and Detroit soul into swinging contemporary funk and soul.
In 2015, he broke through with Georgia, that sounded a little like John Newman and contained a sample from the Northern Soul classic Shoes by Bobby Bland. His new single Fragile is an even more danceable affair.

Wildcard (week 24):
Nana Adjoa – The Resolution
Meet Nana Adjoa (real last name: Effah-Bekoe). She’s a talented Dutch singer-songwriter, who used to play bass and guitar and provide backing vocals in a plethora of bands, like A Polaroid View, Sue The Night and most recently with Janne Schra. Now, she’s working on a solo career.
The last few years Adjoa has been working on the songs that are about to be released on her debut EP Down At The Root. The first track off it is the beautiful single The Resolution, which she wrote and produced herself.
The Resolution by Nana Adjoa is this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!

Valparaiso (feat. Phoebe Killdeer & Howe Gelb) – Rising Tides
Valparaiso is a Paris based collective, with Hervé and Thierry Mazurel – formerly of French cult act Jack The Ripper – as its core members. They named the project after the Chilean seaport Valparaiso, which has always been a beacon for travellers and sailors. The band symbolizes a harbour that welcomes artists who stay for a while, leave and may come back.
The guest singers on Valparaiso’s new single Rising Tides are Phoebe Killdeer and Howe Gelb. Killdeer is best known as singer with the band Nouvelle Vague. With her own band The Short Straws she recorded The Fade Out Line, which was reworked by The Avener and became an international hit as Fade Out Lines.
The original, instrumental version of Rising Tides was the theme of the film ‘2 Temps, 3 Mouvements’ in 2014. This new, vocal version was produced by John Parish, best known for his work with PJ Harvey. The song sounds like a murder ballad to me. Remember Where The Wild Roses Grow by Nick Cave & Kylie Minogue?
Rising Tides is the first music to be released of Valparaiso’s upcoming album Broken Homeland, to be released 22 September.

Alvvays – In Undertow
Funny how certain words, that are not often used in everyday language, can suddenly pop up like weeds. In recent months, ‘undertow’ is such a word. Pet Shop Boys released a single with that title, as did the bands CUT_ and Panama. One of the stand-out tracks on Dan Auerbach’s latest album is named Undertow as well, and now Alvvays comes up with their single In Undertow…
Almost three years ago, the Canadian indie-pop darlings released their self-titled debut album and now they’re back with new music. We’ll have to wait ‘till 8 September before their new album Antisocialites drops, but until then, we can enjoy the first single.
In Undertow is a break-up song. “You made a mistake you’d like to erase,” Molly Rankin sings in a shoegaze kind of way, “and I understand.” But with determination she adds: “There’s no turning back after what’s been said.”

Dua Lipa – Bad Together / Genesis
Dua Lipa released her first single, New Love, in August 2015. Since then, Be The One, Hotter Than Hell, Blow Your Mind (Mwah) – all three of them ex Carte Blanche Music Wildcards – and Lost In Your Light (feat. Miguel) followed, while Last Dance, Room For 2 and Thinking ‘bout You were issued as separate digital tracks as well.
Apart from these songs, she also scored big as featured singer on Sean Paul’s No Lie, Martin Garrix’s Scared To Be Lonely and Wale’s My Love (feat. Major Lazer & WizKid). 11 (hit) singles in 22 months, what a way to start your career!
All eight of Dua Lipa’s own singles are collected on the Deluxe Edition of her self-titled debut album, a bundle of 17 songs (the standard version has 12). An obvious choice for the next single is Homesick, a collaboration (although uncredited) with Coldplay’s Chris Martin. New Rules stands a good chance to be released as a future single as well, but two other album tracks are my favourites.
Bad Together, that’s only on the Deluxe Edition by the way…
…and the album’s opener, Genesis:

Placebo – Life’s What You Make It
In 2016 it was 20 years ago that Placebo released its debut album. Reason for the band to summarize that period with a career spanning retrospective: A Place For Us To Dream. This ‘best of’ double album contained all of their singles (with the exception, funny enough, of the most appropriately titled one of them all: Twenty Years). That ommition was compensated with the inclusion of a brand new track: Jesus’ Son.
This track was also part of an EP with six previously unreleased tracks, that Placebo put out in the same week as the ‘best of’. One of the other five songs on it was a cover of Talk Talk’s 1985 hit Life’s What You Make It (fun fact: this EP also contains not one, but two versions op Twenty Years). The band have a long history of recording cover versions as B-sides for their singles. Tracks like Running Up That Hill and Daddy Cool were subject to the Placebo cover treatment before.
Only now a video to their version of Life’s What You Make It has been released. It underpins the song’s message to great extent…
