Frills – Magic Tide
Last spring, New York based New-Zealand duo Frills released their debut single My Love. A song that caused me to keep an eye on them.
Their second single doesn’t disappoint. Simon Oscroft and Dan Gibson deliver another easy going slice of danceable indie pop. Surely, there’s more where this came from!

European Border Breakers Chart 29 September 2017
Some of the artists who had their first success in the European Border Breakers Chart over the past year, enter again this week with their latest efforts. Most impressing is the accomplishment of Finnish emerging artist Alma (pictured). Her new single Phases comes in at #6 this week. This isn’t given to many artists. The track features French Montana, who is an American, by the way.
Another future promising artist that you have come to know through the EBBChart is Anne-Marie. Her new track Heavy enters at #19 this week. Her previous singles Do It Right, Alarm and Ciao Adios reached #27, #6 and #2 respectively. Is Heavy destined for #1? Watch this space…
Other first-timers this week are Yungblud – I Love You Will You Marry Me (#78), Borokov Borokov – Had Ik Maar Wat Meer Vakantie (#81), Témé Tan – Coups De Griffe (#82) and Davai feat. Cire – Replay (#84). Elsewhere, seven tracks make a re-entry in this week’s chart.
For the complete Top 100, click the ‘EBBChart’ tab in the top menu of this blog (loading of the PDF may take a little while). For more charts (like the Tips, ranking the tracks that are on their way to the Top 100), please visit www.europeanborderbreakerschart.eu.

Les Gordons – Let The Music Speak
Swedish ‘maximum-energy band’, formed in the city of Örebro in 2009 as The Gordons. After three years, they decided to change their name to the more unique Les Gordons. Playing many live shows, it took them until 2015 to release their self-titled debut album, which landed them even more gigs.
In 2016, they were awarded the jury’s prize in the national finals of (Sweden’s biggest) radio station P4’s competition Svensktoppen nästa, winning them a place in this years’ edition of Sweden’s biggest music competition: Melodifestivalen.
And now, Les Gordons are back with a track that will make you understand why they have been dubbed ‘The Hives with more pop’. Let The Music Speak!

Caparezza – Ti Fa Stare Bene
As a rapper, Michele Salvemini calls himself Caparezza. That means ‘curly head’ in an Italian dialect. He considers Frank Zappa as his musical mentor. Hence the social and political criticism and the sharp irony in many of his lyrics.
Since the first album he recorded under this stage name, in 2000, he worked with many other musicians, some of them being Tony Hadley (of Spandau Ballet fame) and Roy Paci & Aretuska, who featured here before.
From Caparezza’s seventh album Prisoner 709, released last week, Ti Fa Stare Bene is the great new single.

We Invented Paris – Fuss
We Invented Paris is a collective centred around Swiss singer-songwriter Flavian Graber. Apart from musicians, the troupe also comprises designers and film makers. A creative community, that refuses to stick to the same routines for too long, resulting, for instance, in an ever changing sound.
On their third album Catastrophe they are no longer the folk pop band they were before. Thanks to the introduction of the keytar in their music, their sound had become more rocky. Still basically electronic, but both retro and futuristic at the same time.
If that description is more than your imagination can handle, just listen to their new single Fuss for a fine example (with a video that is 1000% retro, by the way…)

Wildcard (week 39):
The Hunna – Summer
To me, The Hunna (who’s Piece By Piece and Never Enough already featured here), are one of the best emerging rock bands to come out of the UK lately. In the two years since they were founded, The Hunna delivered a great debut album, which spawned no less than six singles.
Summer is a brand new track already, providing further proof that The Hunna deserve to be the next big thing.
For starters, they score this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard (all of which you can find in this neat little playlist).

Black Country Communion – Over My Head
Confession: I hadn’t heard of Black Country Communion before. My fault. For BCC is a real supergroup, combining the talents of Joe Bonamassa (vocals and guitar), Glenn Hughes (vocals and bass), Jason Bonham (drums and percussion) and Derek Sherinian (keyboards). And it was founded as early as 2009. My bad, totally.
No surprise, then, that their new album BCCIV is their fourth. It marks the band’s reunion, after they split up in 2013. Good to hear nothing changed, really. The band still excel in their mix of blues rock and hard rock. Enjoy new single Over My Head here in the format of your liking:

Tiggs Da Author – Work It Out
Before you read on, please listen to this track that I was completely mad about in 2003, Jerk It Out by Caesars (known as Caesars Palace in their home country Sweden and as Twelve Caesars elsewhere in Scandinavia, to keep things simple):
Fast forward to 2017: here is Tiggs Da Author’s version of this song. Thankfully he left the original pretty much intact, basically only changing one word in the title and adding a rap to the bridge. I hope this cover (with its Chris Martin featuring fun video) will introduce a truly great song to a whole new generation (leaving me feeling old…).

Hippo Campus – Baseball
Hippo Campus make smart music. That’s not strange for a band that named itself after a part of the brain. If you like Satellite Stories, then open your mind for Hippo Campus as well…
After releasing quite some singles and EP’s since 2015, their debut album Landmark came out only early this year. Now, seven months later, they quickly follow it up with the surprise EP Warm Glow, containing three brand new tracks. Long-term live favourite Baseball is the first single.

Werner’s Weekly (week 39)
Demi Lovato isn’t an artist who really needs my support here, but her new single is one of the most surprising new releases of the last week. A very strong track, that certainly deserves a spot in my Carte Blanche Music 2017 playlist, featuring great new music only. The latest tracks by Maggie Rogers, Morrissey, Rat Boy, Young Gun Silver Fox and Youngr all fall in that category as well, so if you’re curious, you know where to find them. Subscribe to this list and you’ll never miss a good song anymore.
But if you’d rather have a shortlist, a convenient overview of only the best of the best new music, look no further. Werner’s Weekly is exactly that, showcasing the (in this case) eight absolute highlights of the past week, alphabetically ordered. For your listening pleasure, all tracks are available through the Werner’s Weekly player in the sidebar of this blog. I promise you 31 delicious minutes; a great start of the day. Finally, clicking on the links below will provide you with more information about each song.
