European Border Breakers Chart 17 November 2017
This week’s European Border Breakers Chart counts 12 entries, five tracks of which are first-timers. All of them emerging European artists, who start to have success outside their home country.
Sigrid, a talent from Norway who’s Don’t Kill That Vibe and Plot Twist you could’ve spotted before via the #EBBCharts, is the highest entry of this week with her new single Strangers (#17). Pale Waves (pictured) follow up their hit Television Romance (that came to #41) with New Year’s Eve, which comes in at #75. German duo Aden (Jarden) x (Björn) Olson make their debut at #79 with Cloud 9, Swiss/English duo Freedo feat. Gabriella Vixen do the same with Keep Your Love On Me (#88), and finally, all-female rock band Dream Wife propose Let’s Make Out at #98.
In the Tips chart, ranking the tracks that are on their way to the Top 100, Your Tears by Rews is the highest newcomer.
For the complete Top 100, click the ‘EBBChart’ tab in the top menu of this blog (loading of the PDF may take a little while). More charts (like the Tips), are available at www.europeanborderbreakerschart.eu, where you can listen to all of the tracks and watch their videos as well.

The Night Ships – Half The World
In 2014 and 2015, Dutch musician Rob Nakken travelled around the world. Everywhere he came, he recorded music with local musicians. Since then, he is putting the pieces together like a puzzle and releases the resulting songs under the moniker The Night Ships. This is basically a duo, consisting of Nakken and Australian singer Ingrid Giles.
The Night Ships’ new single Half The World features a bass part recorded in South Africa, and the sitar, tar and percussion were recorded in Iran. You’ll also hear a choir of singers from the Netherlands, United States, Canada, Uruguay, France, England and Ireland, and a violinist from Chile. Indeed, ‘half the world’ appears to be contributing to this song. World music in the most literal sense.
The lyrics of this track are a call to action to women (and men) in all countries to stand up against violence, oppression and discrimination that women face every day as half of the world’s inhabitants. It calls upon equal rights, opportunity and status. All of these ingredients make for a song that’s not only great, but extremely up-to-date as well.

Human – Higher
Human is a new Swedish pop collective fronted by Daniel Adams-Ray. Higher is their debut single. An infectious mix of blues and pop, rich in rhythm and melody, and very well-produced. In other words: a potential future Scandinavian pop hit, like so many great songs from the region.

Boy Azooga – Face Behind Her Cigarette
The groove is back in today’s music and I can’t get enough of it! Take this debut release by Boy Azooga for instance.
The band, the brainchild of Cardiff native Davey Newington, has signed with the legendary Heavenly Recordings label that discovered artists like Manic Street Preachers, Saint Etienne and Doves in the nineties.
Boy Azooga plays psychedelic indie-pop/rock and this first single pays tribute to Nigerian funk icon William Onyeabor.

Alien Stadium – This One’s For The Humans
When Steve Mason (The Beta Band) and Martin Duffy (Primal Scream) start a new project, it’s instantly interesting on paper. And after hearing Alien Stadium’s debut single, one must conclude: it’s not only an interesting project on paper.
This One’s For The Humans is a groovy, cosmic pop rock song, that already makes me look forward to their first EP Livin’ in Elizabethan Times, which comes out 1 December.

Wildcard (week 46):
Kira Puru – Tension
Kira Puru is an Australian vocal talent, but more than that. She’s a multi-disciplinary artist, hands-on at every level, both on stage and in the studio. Apart from that, she’s a photographer, visual artist and DJ.
Renowned for her genre-bending style, Kira Puru’s new single isn’t easy to pin down. With its pounding four-to-the-floor beat, fuzzy bass and tremolo guitar, Tension is equal parts funk and soul. In her own words, it’s ‘goth disco’.
One thing’s for sure: it’s groovy from start to finish and I love it! That’s why Tension by Kira Puru is featured here prominently this week as the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard.

Eleanor Jacks – Run ‘n’ Hide
Hannah, who was apparently born without a last name, 19 years ago, is a singer-songwriter from Sydney. Her artist name is Eleanor Jacks. I don’t need more proof that she has a bright future ahead than her debut single Run ‘n’ Hide.
The song shows a remarkable maturity, both in subject and voice. Run ‘n’ Hide is an account of the everyday thoughts of a girl who ‘probably thinks about things way too much’, sung with a voice reminiscent of London Grammar’s Hannah Reid.

The Unlikely Candidates – World In My Pocket
American rock band The Unlikely Candidates was formed in 2008. Their debut single Follow My Feet, released in 2013, still stands as their biggest hit, but that could change now.
This year, the band released two EP’s, Bed Of Liars and – most recently – Danger To Myself. The latter EP now produces the single World In My Pocket. A Panic! At The Disco kind of track.

Penguin Prison – Turn It Up
Penguin Prison is the one-man band of New York singer, musician, producer and remixer Chris Glover. He grew up listening to his mother’s collection of country records, sang in his school’s gospel choir (alongside later r&b superstar Alicia Keys), formed punk band The Museum and made plenty of remixes for other artists, but he had his first success as a musician when he formed Penguin Prison in 2008.
His new single, Turn It Up, features funky, guitar-driven rhythms to a full-on electro pop backdrop. Lyrically, it’s meant as an encouragement to take action amongst these backwards times we’re currently living in. It’s the first track off Penguin Prison’s forthcoming EP, set for release early 2018.
