Nicole Atkins – Brokedown Luck
Nicole Atkins melts crooner music, Americana, blues, country, pop noir and soul into her own distinguished sound. In a righteous world, she would have been as popular as Lana Del Rey (who must be one of Atkins’s biggest fans).
Her latest album Goodnight Rhonda Lee, that already spawned the great single Sleepwalking, features the track Brokedown Luck. Atkins arranged the horns and co-wrote the song with Jim Sclavunos of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and it has now been chosen as the album’s new single. It comes with a video complete with Elvis impersonators, nuns, ‘shred bull’ and lots of puppetry. The singer even turns into a puppet herself. So, why haven’t you hit ‘play’ yet? ?

Wildcard (week 9):
Everything Everything – Breadwinner
Frontman Jonathan Higgs’s falsetto makes Everything Everything’s music instantly recognizable. Both on record and live the innovative Manchester quartet is on top of its game and their break-through to a larger public, that has been imminent for long, can’t be far away.
Now, half a year after their fourth studio album A Fever Dream, Everything Everything release the EP A Deeper Sea. Breadwinner, with its ultra-catchy “You’ve gotta be kidding me” chorus, is the set’s energetic and infectious first single.
This whole week it’ll only be one mouse click away on Carte Blanche Music, as it is the new Wildcard.

Youth Club – The Man That I Am
Two members of this Southend four-piece are brothers. They had been writing songs together for years, before even starting a band.
The Man That I Am is Youth Club’s new single. They call it ‘funky and sexy’ and that’s exactly what it is. ‘I’ve got to keep on moving’, the lyrics say, and that’s exactly what the song does to you. This smooth feel-good track is built around a rhythmic guitar, classy vocals and an energetic drive, that will make you long for the spring, or better: the summer, or best of all: the summer festivals!

Janelle Monáe – Make Me Feel
We’ve had to wait for five years, but Janelle Monáe makes it worth it. She released not one, but two new songs this week. Django Jane is one of them, but boy, do I prefer the other one!
Calling Make Me Feel ‘funky’ is an understatement. It could have been a Prince track. No wonder when you know that the purple one collaborated with Monáe on her new music, just before he passed away two years ago. His influence will be very present on her next album Dirty Computer (out on 27 April).

Brand New Friend – Girl
Punk rock isn’t dead. Each decennium has its heroes, from the Ramones and Sex Pistols via Green Day and The Offspring to Sum 41 and Blink-182. Will Brand New Friend be next in that list?
Brand New Friend is a band from Northern Ireland, led by brother/sister vocalists Lauren and Taylor Johnson. They released their debut EP American Wives in 2016, but their first full length album Seatbelts For Aeroplanes is due for release on 27 April. Girl is the first single off it.

Eckhardt & The House – If She Cannot Talk
Eckhardt & The House is the brain child of singer, drummer, producer and actor Rik Elstgeest. He built a fine career in the last two years, on the back of his first eight singles and debut album, which were full of laid-back pop tracks. But now, it’s time for a new sound!
Eckhardt & The House 2.0 has a more up-tempo and danceable indie sound, without losing its charm. In first single If She Cannot Talk you can hear Talking Heads influences (especially in the instrumental break), as well as a touch of The 1975. What’s not to like about that?

Jareth – Kaleidoscope
London-based vocalist Jareth, who has quite a few collaborations to her name, finally drops her debut single as a lead artist. An impressive debut, I might add, and one that’s not easy to pigeonhole.
Kaleidoscope sits somewhere between analogue and digital; between soul and trip hop. It has a dreamy atmosphere, created by stripped back percussion, soft spiralling keys and especially a warm and intense vocal performance. Imagine Massive Attack covering Riders On The Storm with Dua Lipa on guest vocals.
An intriguing first glimpse at Jareth’s forthcoming EP Moonchild.

Kat Eaton – Robbing You Blind
Last year, I wrote about Kat Eaton’s first single The Joker, a track from the Sheffield singer’s debut EP When You’re Not Around. Another track off that EP is now out as her new single, albeit in remixed form.
Eaton has been playing Robbing You Blind since 2015 and three years later, this four to the floor soul stomper is likely to propel her to a larger audience. Go Kat, go!
