European Border Breakers Chart 17 August 2018
One of the most promising European bands around, Pale Waves (singer Heather Baron-Gracie pictured), are currently with three tracks in the European Border Breakers Chart. This week, they score their first Top 10 hit, as Eighteen rockets from #21 to #9. Outside the Top 10, artists like Ten Tonnes, Yungblud, Boy Azooga and Goat Girl (all with multiple simultaneous hits) spice up the chart with their guitars. Further proof that rock ‘n’ roll isn’t dead (are you listening, Lenny Kravitz?).
This edition of the EBBChart counts 24 (re)entries, mostly songs that have visited the Top 100 before. Four of them, though, are completely new to our weekly showcase of fresh European talent. They are:
#37: Feng Suave – Honey, There’s No Time
#40: Brother Leo – Strangers On An Island
#62: Kolabeech feat. Betsy – Everybody’s Free
#89: Ruthven – Hypothalamus
For the full Top 100, click the ‘EBBChart’ tab in the top menu of this blog (loading of the PDF may take a little while). More charts, like the Tips (ranking the tracks that are on their way to the Top 100), the Airplay Chart and the Streaming Chart, are available at www.europeanborderbreakerschart.eu, where you can also listen to all of the tracks and watch their videos, as well as share them via social media.

One Bit & Louisa – Between You And Me
If you would have lined me up for a blind test, I’d have guessed Between You And Me was a Dua Lipa song, remixed by Shanguy. I would have failed the test gloriously.
In reality, this is the new single by One Bit, a UK duo consisting of Jonty Howard and Joe Murphy, who also delivered the wonderful My Way (feat. Noah Cyrus) late last year. On Between You And Me, Louisa is the featured vocalist. Louisa Johnson won ‘The X Factor UK’ in 2015.

The Struts – Primadonna Like Me
Derby band The Struts, now working from Los Angeles, are well underway to become the best classic rock band of this decennium. After One Night Only and Body Talks, they are now serving up the third single ahead of their second album. Judging from these tracks, that long-player is unlikely to disappoint.
Primadonna Like Me – a brilliant song title for flamboyant frontman Luke Spiller – opens with a cowbell, proceeding into an intro that brings back fond memories of songs like Start Me Up, Saturdaynight’s Alright (For Fighting) and many more. And with a first line like ‘Hey you, don’t you know who I think I am?’ you know for sure Spiller hasn’t forgotten to squeeze in the right amount of bravado.
The Struts continue to hit the bull’s eye. One hundred and eightyyyyyyyyy!

Broods – Peach
Singer Georgia Nott and her older multi-instrumentalist brother Caleb Nott, from Auckland, New Zealand, have been making music together since they were children. They were in the Peasants, a band that won a competition for junior high and high school musical acts in 2011. After the Peasants broke up, they formed electronic pop duo Broods, whose debut album Evergreen topped the New Zealand chart in 2014.
Broods’ third album is expected early in 2019, and the brother-sister outfit just released the first, juicy taste off it. Peach is an upbeat, finger-tapping jewel about ‘feeling all over the place all the time, and then celebrating those moments when everything feels awesome’.

Dashboard Confessional – KindaYeahSorta
Dashboard Confessional is an American band with singer-songwriter Christopher Carrabba as its focal point. He started the project in 2000, but it wasn’t until 2004, when they contributed the song Vindicated to the ‘Spider-Man 2’ soundtrack, that the band truly resonated with a wide audience, with the single rising to #2 in the United States. After 2009’s album Alter The Ending, an extended hiatus followed.
Only in 2017, Carrabba resurrected Dashboard Confessional for the Covered And Taped EP, which featured covers of songs by The 1975, Justin Bieber, and others. Early in 2018, he returned with Crooked Shadows, his first collection of original material in over eight years.
Not wasting any time, Dashboard Confessional just released a brand new song. KindaYeahSorta is simple and sun-drenched, and sometimes that’s all you need.

Wildcard (week 33):
Cookin’ On 3 Burners feat. Kaiit – Warning
Australian Hammond organ trio Cookin’ On 3 Burners formed in 1997, but got worldwide recognition in 2016, after French DJ Kungs remixed their classic soul track This Girl into a global hit.
Two years later, Cookin’ On 3 Burners release the lead single from their upcoming album Lab Experiments Vol. 2. Warning, which features vocals by 20-year-old Ozzy talent Kaiit, is a funky affair, somewhere halfway The JB’s and The Brand New Heavies. A punchy, hard hitting vocal banger with a great groove, that’s only one mouse click away for a whole week, as it’s the new Wildcard on this blog. You can find of the Carte Blanche Music Wildcards of the year so far in this playlist.
By the way: the instrumental B-side The Jump Off is a treat as well!

Arcade Hearts – Humble
Portsmouth band Arcade Hearts haven’t sat still since they brought us their debut single Honey in 2017. Follow-up Running was even better, and the quartet just released their fourth single.
Humble is another glossy pop song with ‘eighties’ written all over it. It precedes the band’s debut EP, due 21 September.

Sir Notch – Gimme That Sunshine
Sir Notch is one of the aliases of Dutch singer-songwriter/producer Christon Kloosterboer, who has been working with Hardwell, Sam Feldt and Dash Berlin, and recently co-wrote Go For The Gold by Rudenko & Aloe Blacc.
After tracks like Please Don’t Go and Depth Of My Mistakes (feat. Steffen Morrison), Gimme That Sunshine is his latest single under the Sir Notch guise, released on his own Exquisite label. An uplifting song with C2C-like scratching vocal effects, that’s equal parts jazz, gospel and soul, and has a great summer vibe.
The tune was written to accompany a television commercial for juice brand Appelsientje, but the music alone is utterly refreshening as well. Taste it below via the streaming platform of your liking. Sure to put a smile(y) on your face!

Sean OB – Trouble
Sean OB is a songwriter from Dublin, who first picked up a guitar at 12 years of age. After finishing school, he started taking his musicianship more seriously. Displaying remarkable skills as a songwriter and lyricist, he developed an attitude and voice that’s unmistakable. Do you like a quick and easy comparison? Think Jamie T or Arctic Monkeys. But under the surface, there’s also Joe Strummer, John Lennon and Jerry Lee Lewis.
Sean OB spent two years plowing through his pile of self-penned songs to pick the right ones for his debut EP, which he recorded with Grammy Award-winning Rob Kirwan (of Hozier and The Horrors fame). His second single is Trouble, which was – in his own words – ‘written for anyone dealing with anxiety and depression, mild or major. In past or present relationships, good or bad. And who spends those long nights staring into the darkness questioning our strange existence’.
