European Border Breakers Chart 10 August 2018
The European Border Breakers Chart isn’t your average chart. Not only does it exclusively contain emerging European artists with their first successes outside their own countries, but it’s also quicker than any other chart. I’m not the bragging kind, and this week’s Top 100 once again proves my point: almost one third of the chart is fresh compared to last week, and nearly half of the 32 entries have never been in the list before.
You’ll find these 15 first-timers below, with the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard of this week, Uh Huh by Jade Bird (pictured), proudly leading the pack:
#35: Jade Bird – Uh Huh
#43: Silk City feat. Desiigner & Goldlink – Loud
#44: Sean OB – Trouble
#51: Ten Tonnes – G.I.V.E.
#56: Josh. – Cordula Grün
#71: Big Pineapple – Another Chance
#72: Jimothy Lacoste – I Can Speak Spanish
#76: Flowliner feat. Kevin D & Stavroz Martina – Doo Wop
#78: Superorganism – Congratulations
#83: Charlotte Adigéry – 1,618
#86: Lucie Horsch – Concerto in C-Minor RV 441: III. Allegro
#90: Kojaque – Last Pint
#91: J. Bernardt – On Fire
#96: Andy Brown – Talk Of The Town
#100: Free Love – Pushing Too Hard

Jaya & Kevin Bridge – Trippin’
A decade ago, Australian Jaya McLoughlin and Dutchman Kevin Suierveld met whilst studying audio engineering in Australia. Since then, singer-songwriter McLoughlin moved to London to front her own band, JAYA, while Suierveld settled down as a musician/producer in Brisbane, Australia. They stayed mates, however, and started collaborating via the internet.
The first fruit of this collab is the track Trippin’, credited to Jaya & Kevin Bridge. Drawing on folk and electronic influences, they wrote a catchy melody and submerged it in a pool of ambient sounds. If you like the atmosphere of Life In A Northern Town by The Dream Academy or Imogen Heap’s soundscapes, Trippin’ is a real treat!

Danko – Hit Me Up
Danko (born as Samuel Gori), is a 16-year-old producer from the north of Italy. He started his musical career playing the piano he received from his parents on his sixth birthday. His first inspirations as an artist were Michael Jackson and Jamiroquai. Later, he discovered a passion for electronic music and dominant vocals.
Early in his career already, he received massive support from the likes of Tiësto, Hardwell and Alan Walker. Now, it’s time for the general public to fully embrace him. To me, his new single Hit Me Up sounds like the track that could establish that. The funky guitar riff it starts off with is immediately recognizable: it’s a sample from Ohio Players’ Love Rollercoaster. This makes the song suitable for radio as well as DJ sets. Could be massive!

Fanclub – Leaves
Hailing from Austin, Texas, Fanclub was initially founded by guitarist Mike Lee, who wanted to re-record his favourite albums with an ever changing cast of musicians. However, after working with singer Leslie Crunkilton, he decided it might be a lot more fun to record his own songs. He enlisted his old bandmate, drummer Daniel Schmidt, and Fanclub was born.
The band finds itself between indie and pop, with New Order as an obvious influence, but listening to their debut single Leaves, I’m sure they like shoegaze as well. All in all, with its understated vocals, great indie guitar sound and subtle shimmering electronica, Leaves comes across as a future classic indie-pop song.

Frills – Drunk Girls, Drunk Boys
Regular Carte Blanche Music visitors may have heard of Frills before. This band operates from Brooklyn, New York, but consists of New-Zealand exports Simon Oscroft and Dan Gibson. I wrote about their singles My Love and Magic Tide before.
Drunk Girls, Drunk Boys is another cool feel-good song, with an infectious beat, jangly guitars and poppy synths as its main ingredients.

Wildcard (week 32):
Jade Bird – Uh Huh
Only a year ago, now 20-year-old Jade Bird released her debut EP Something American, which featured the lovely single Cathedral. Since then, she hit the jackpot again with Lottery and put out Furious, which sounded all but that.
Now, she’s back with her most raw, powerful and rocky tune yet. An upbeat melody accompanying Bird’s great voice, Uh Huh lasts only less than two and a half minute, but it is convincing from the first second. Without a doubt an important next step towards wider success.
In an attempt to help Jade Bird spread her wings, I chose Uh Huh as this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. You can find the full bunch of great songs that preceded her in the Wildcards 2018 playlist.

Dizzy – Backstroke
Dizzy is a band that consists of three young brothers from suburban Ontario, Canada plus their neighbour Katie Munshaw as lead singer. They make dreamy, minimalistic pop music, combining fizzing guitar melodies with soulful vocals and often very personal lyrics.
After Stars And Moons, Swim, Pretty Thing and Joshua, Backstroke is the fifth single to precede the band’s debut album Baby Teeth, due this month. Backstroke is a wonderful song, produced by Damian Taylor, who worked with artists as diverse as The Prodigy, Björk, Arcade Fire, The Killers, UNKLE, and Evanescence.

Gecko Turner – Un Limón En La Cabeza
Gecko Turner (born Fernando Gabriel Echave Pelaez) grew up in Badajoz, Spain, a small town about halfway between Lisbon and Madrid. He learned English from the blues artists he loved. After a long musical journey, he started composing in a style that combined jazz, blues, samba, reggae, hip-hop, Arab music, and more into something all his own.
When he went to the copyright office to register his songs, the form had a space for both his proper name and an alias. Being nicknamed ‘Gecko’ since boyhood and loving the music of Big Joe Turner, he wrote down Gecko Turner.
His first album Guapapasea! featured the track Un Limón En La Cabeza, that grew out to become one of Turner’s signature tunes. 15 years later, ahead of the release of Soniquete, a compilation of greatest hits, previously unreleased gems and new songs by Gecko Turner (slated for release in autumn 2018), the track is re-released.

Hands Like Houses – Overthinking
Hands Like Houses, who were born and bred in Canberra, are one of Australia’s biggest rock exports. Their 2016 album Dissonants, especially, helped them achieve that status. It was their major break-through, in- and outside their home country.
The band spent recent months in Hollywood, recording their 4th album -Anon. which was produced by Colin Brittain, who worked with 5 Seconds of Summer and All Time Low before. The long player will be out on 12 October. Around that time, Hands Like Houses will return to Europe for a series of concerts. In the meantime, we can enjoy their new single Overthinking, a swing-groove powered rock stormer with huge production and an even bigger chorus.
