European Border Breakers Chart 3 August 2018
A chart is a 24/7 thing. Once published, you can consult it around the clock. In the case of the European Border Breakers Chart, there is even much more to explore than just the Top 100. You can split the list into an Airplay Chart and a Streaming Chart, check the tracks that are bubbling just under the Top 100 in the Tips Chart, search the chart archive, watch all the available videos and listen to the songs via streaming platforms, check in what countries each track is successful, etc.
If you’d like to receive an email upon publication (every Friday around noon), simply subscribe to our newsletter.
This week, the EBBChart is a 24/7 thing in more ways than one. The Top 100 counts 24 entries, 7 of which are completely fresh. I’ve listed them below:
#79: Goat Girl – I Don’t Care Pt. 2
#82: Sam Fender – Leave Fast
#87: Apre – All Yours
#88: Cosha – Sad Train Beat (pictured)
#92: whenyoung – Heaven On Earth
#96: Palatine – Paris, L’ombre
#99: Harry Styles – Only Angel
More background information can be found in our weekly chart analysis. For the full Top 100, click the ‘EBBChart’ tab in the top menu of this blog (loading of the PDF may take a little while). More charts, like the Tips (ranking the tracks that are on their way to the Top 100), the Airplay Chart and the Streaming Chart, are available at www.europeanborderbreakerschart.eu, where you can also listen to all of the tracks and watch their videos, as well as share them via social media.

Maggie Rogers – Give A Little
It’s been two years since Maggie Rogers caught the attention and received the praise of Pharrell Williams with her first single Alaska. She presented it to him as a demo, but he urged her not to add a single note. If you don’t know the story, do check this video, it’s hugely inspirational!
A few singles later, Maggie – now living the American dream – has another fine track out. Once again, it’s a layered song, combining dance elements with her folk roots, while I can’t help but thinking it has also been inspired by the Haim sisters, whom she was support act for, recently. Great tune!

Dreams – Love To Live
Empire Of The Sun’s Luke Steele and Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns formed a new Australian supergroup: Dreams. The pair just released the second single to be taken from their forthcoming debut album No One Defeats Us, scheduled for delivery on 14 September.
Don’t let all the guitars and rock outfits in the video distract you: this is a pure pop song for a broad audience. Apart from the lyric ‘A friend in need is a friend indeed’, borrowed from Placebo’s Pure Morning, this is a fresh and original song that was made for the airwaves.

Just Loud feat. Debbie Harry – Soul Train
Rising US artist Just Loud has released an infectiously funky new song, Soul Train, featuring a very special guest: Debbie Harry of Blondie-fame. It’s the first taste of his newly announced self-titled debut album, out 16 November.
Soul Train, like other tracks on the forthcoming album, blends pop, modern rhythm and blues and ’80s rock spirit in the best Lenny Kravitz tradition, while Just Loud’s falsetto adds some extra drama to the song. A great introduction!

Your favourites (July 2018)
These were your ten favourites in July:
- Waylon – That’s How She Goes
- Nona – It’s Alright
- TenTemPiés – Only You
- Buika – Deadbeat
- Mamazzoop – Summer Is Shining
- Jerry Williams – Left And Right
- Radkey – Basement
- Harlea – Beautiful Mess
- Young Gun Silver Fox – Kingston Boogie (WC)
- Stillmode – Wild One
In other words: out of all of my recommendations in the month of July, the above 10 were read the most. A nice an diverse package, my compliments! A special mention goes out to La Loi De Murphy by Angèle, a track I reviewed in November last year, but that still proves popular amongst the Carte Blanche Music readers. And rightfully so!
Another fun fact: half of this Top 10 (#1, #2, #3, #5 and #10) consists of Dutch artists, providing further proof that a small country like this can be great in music. Of course I’m aware these figures may be somewhat coloured by fanatic fan bases of the artists, but knowing how many of you live outside the Netherlands, I sincerely hope I’ve been able to introduce some of these great acts to people outside the lowlands.
All of the tracks above, and many more, can be found in my 2018 container playlist Carte Blanche Music, which I update continuously. It grows at a pretty steady pace and now holds the almost 670 best new songs of 2018 so far, the equivalent of nearly 40 hours of great new music. Feel free to listen, subscribe and/or share if you like!

Wildcard (week 31):
Manic Street Preachers – People Give In
No need to introduce Manic Street Preachers. Ever since their 1992 debut album Generation Terrorists I’ve been a fan of this Welsh band, often colloquially known as The Manics.
Their latest album Resistance Is Futile, released on Friday 13 April, is their 13th. Sounds like a good luck charm to me 😉. The long-player is, in the band’s own words, ‘obsessively melodic’. It’s clear from opening track People Give In on, it has the orchestral sweep of their most successful album to date, 1996’s Everything Must Go.
People Give In has now been chosen as the album’s sixth and last single. A song about growing old(er), it brings listeners through the trials and tribulations life often brings our way and comments on people’s responses to it. People get tired, people get old, people get forgotten, people give in, people move on, people stay strong. It’s a hopeful reminder of human resilience.
This week, People Give In by Manic Street Preachers is the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. You can find a full list in the Wildcards 2018 playlist.
