Holy Holy – Faces
Holy Holy used to be an Australian guitar duo. Well, Oscar Dawson and Tim Carroll are still Australians, but on their upcoming third album, they ditch the guitars. Instead, they are movingĀ away fromĀ their trademark solos and riffs in favour of sampled vocal loops and programmed synth bass lines, on top ofĀ layers of live and programmed beats. This new sonic territory has a harder, more synth-y edge than their earlier music.
New single Faces is the first taste off this new album. Rest assured, there are still some guitars, but overall you can hear a reborn Holy Holy. Their new record is mixed by Rich Costey, who is known for his work with Arctic Monkeys, Chvrches, Muse, Haim, Franz Ferdinand and many others.

Kid Rock – Snatching It Back
This week, the album Muscle Shoals: Small Town, Big Sound comes out. It features artists like Steven Tyler (Aerosmith) & Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme), Eli āPaperboyāĀ Reed, Michael McDonald, Aloe Blacc, Candi Staton and Brently Stephen Smith (Shinedown) interpreting tunes initially made famous by The Rolling Stones, Etta James, the Staple Singers, Wilson Pickett, Bob Seger, Bob Dylan and others.
Kid Rock releases the first single off the project. He covers Clarence Carter’s Snatching It Back, using the original instrumental bed from 1969 (featuring the iconic Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section), with added electric piano by session veteranĀ Jim āMooseā Brown. Surely, nothing beats the original, but this comes very close!

Logue – A Situation
Logue is a band that formed in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, named after a character in the British movie āThe Kingās Speechā. They were influenced by acts like The Wombats, Tame Impala, Circa Waves, and Nothing But Thieves. Just like those bands, they seek a balance between effective pop songs and unvarnished indie rock.
Their first two EPās, Cold Hearts (2014) and Some Kind of Glimmer (2017), were well received and Logueās singles got the airplay they deserved. Their song Jump the Gun was even featured in American TV series āKevin Probably Saves The Worldā on ABC Network.
Now, the band are back with new single A Situation, a tightly bouncing pop rock song, produced by Jurriaan Sielcken (Jett Rebel, Lucas Hamming, Stillwave).

Cookinā On 3 Burners – The Jump Off
Six weeks ago, when Warning by Cookinā On 3 Burners feat. Kaiit was the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, I already mentioned its great instrumental B-side The Jump Off. Apparently, I wasnāt the only one to like that track, as the Australian Hammond organ trio has now decided to release it as a single in its own right.
The Jump Off, which will feature on the bandās next album Lab Experiments Vol. 2, just like Warning, is a brilliant funk track, that I would have loved to have heard James Brownās vocals on.
For this new single, Cookinā On 3 Burners asked B-boys and B-girls to submit their moves and represent their city. Breakers The Wildup Crew (Rome), Young Masters Crew (Melbourne), Bboy Levi (Erlangen), Bboy Bruce Wayne (Paris), and Bboy Banjo (Sunshine) were chosen to feature in the video. The result is a crowd sourced collaboration cut together highlighting their skills and celebrating the funk.

Wildcard (week 39):
morgxn & Walk The Moon – home
16 December 2016, nearly 30 years after I started, I made my last regular Carte Blanche radio show. In that program, I played the track home by morgxn, a guy from Nashville who already sung in a gospel choir at the age of 6. As a 9-year-old, he took singing and piano lessons and started writing his own songs. Then he went to New York, where he ended up in the theatre world.
By 2016 however, morgxn refocussed on his music, which led to the release of his album vital, containing his singles love you with the lights on, Duran Duran cover notorious and the stomper home. The latter alone is so far good for 8 million Spotify streams.
Fast forward to 2018. A slight reworking of home has just been re-released, this time featuring Walk The Moon singer Nicholas Petricca. The two versions donāt differ dramatically, but this sure is a fine reminder of the great electronic soul track home already was!
This week, the Carte Blanche Music blog is the songās temporary home, as it is the new Wildcard. This means it features here prominently, and itās only one mouse click away from listening. Just like all of the tracks in the Wildcards 2018 playlist.

Minyeshu – Aynocheh (Your Eyes)
For many years (for ever?), the United States and Great Britain have been the main suppliers of artists with worldwide success. This one is for people who arenāt only prepared to listen to music from other Western countries, but who are even prepared to listen to music from other cultures entirely. Because great music is produced all over the worldā¦
Please, meet Minyeshu Kifle Tedla, who was born in the city of Dire Dawa in the east of Ethiopia. After joined the leading National Theatre of Ethiopia at the age of 17, she developed her artistic multi talents as a singer, dancer, producer and choreographer. Currently based in Amsterdam, she treats us withĀ hypnotic Ethiopian grooves, stunning vocals and melodies, delicately mixed with Western instruments and styles.
On 26 October, Minyeshu releases her new album Daa Dee. Aynocheh (Your Eyes) is the first single off it. Another song with irresistible grooves, thanks to the prominent bass and horns, Aynocheh is about finding love, your soulmate and best friend.
Ethiopian world music that deserves a worldwide audience!

Beaux – My Love
Dutch indie pop band Beaux was formed at pop institute the Herman Brood Academie. They combine synth sounds with catchy guitars and vocals. After numerous festival gigs, and support shows for Declan McKenna and George Ezra, they just finished their own successful club tour.
My Love is the bandās new single. A fresh and accessible pop song that refuses to leave your brain (even though they sing āIāll make you forget it allā).

The Proclaimers – You Make Me Happy
Itās 31 years ago we first heard from the identical Scottish twin brothers Charlie and Craig Reid. Their debut album This Is The Story contained the instantly likeable (Gerry Rafferty-produced) single Letter From America, which was followed by other folk pop gems like Iām Gonna Be (500 Miles), and Letās Get Married.
By now, the twins are 56, and they tirelessly continue to make the world a little bit better through their music. Their new album Angry Cyclist is their eleventh to date. My favourite track off it is an instant singalong: the bruising, direct and driving Celtic belter You Make Me Happy, where the brothers sing of achieving a state of romantic bliss so potent it has the ability to eradicate all of lifeās inherent negativity. Itās not an official single (yet), but a fan compiled his own video for it, and did a great job!

Wernerās Weekly (week 39)
Christine & The Queens, Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians, Imagine Dragons, India.Arie, Johnny Marr, Primal Scream, Public Service Broadcasting, Rita Ora and White Lies are all wonderful artists with great new singles. All of these, and many more, have been freshly added to my constantly updated Spotify-playlist Carte Blanche Music, which contains the best new music of this year, so far. If thatās too much for now (no offence), I can recommend Wernerās Weekly, your compass to the music that matters. This ābest of the bestā playlist features only 6 songs that donāt take more than 23 minutes of your time. You can listen to them via the Wernerās Weekly player in the sidebar.
