Carte Blanche Music Top 2019
Ahead of your favourites among this year’s Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which I publish on New Year’s Day, I round off 2019 with my personal choices.
The last year, I introduced you to 979 great new songs via my container playlist Carte Blanche Music; almost 57 hours of music. Exactly 500 of those translated into a written endorsement through this blog. In other words: only one out of each 10 suggestions (and one fifth of all of my posts) made it onto the Carte Blanche Music Top 2019.
Just like the recommendations you can find here every day, this year-end list differs largely from the majority of charts you’ll find. The Top 100 below is filled with the finest pop and rock; and a much larger percentage of rock than you’ll hear on the radio. Most tracks were independently released by upcoming artists from all over the world, and feature female vocals. Just a few statistics:
- 60% of the tracks are sung by women (up from an already impressive 58% in the Carte Blanche Music Top 2018)
- 53% of the tracks is guitar-based (10% more than last year)
- Apart from British and American acts, my list contains artists from Australia (14 of them!), France (9), Canada (5), the Netherlands (5), Norway (4), Ireland (3), Belgium (3), Spain (2), Sweden (2), Denmark (2), Germany (1), Israel (1) and Brazil (1)
- As a result, you’ll not only hear lyrics in English, but also in French, Spanish and Swedish
- Apart from Dua Lipa and Lizzo, you won’t find any hits in this chart. It’s a great way to discover artists, some of which I expect to break through in the years to come
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2019 features 100 tracks. You can listen to them via the Spotify player. As compiling the list was hard enough, the songs are sorted alphabetically. Just use the shuffle button if you prefer another order 😉.
Meanwhile, you can read my original recommendations through the links below.

The Front Bottoms – Camouflage
Let’s get rid of the jingle bells and bring the guitars back in, shall we? New Jersey’s The Front Bottoms have an open-minded approach to indie rock, adding elements of other genres all the time. Their new single Camouflage however, is a pretty straight-forward rock song. That’s almost a relief in today’s eclectic music world. Great tune!
Camouflage is a stand-alone single. Meanwhile, the duo (singer Brian Sella and drummer Mat Uychich) are working on a new album, due for release in 2020. It’ll be their third for Fueled By Ramen, the label of Twenty One Pilots, Panic! At The Disco, and Paramore as well.

Wildcard (week 52):
Barry Moore – The Tide
Some tracks that you already liked, still get better and better with each listen. One such example is The Tide by Barry Moore, an Irish singer, songwriter and musician. After spending his youth in San Francisco, he is now back in Europe. However, it’s not Ireland, but France where he starts his musical career. He got signed by Spookland Records; only their second signing after Jain.
Following his great debut single Hey Now (from the EP Lost Boys), The Tide is his new single. Definitely one to check for Twenty One Pilots fans. Expect Barry Moore to fly as high as they do when he puts out his debut album in 2020.
Ahead of that, I’d like to draw some more attention to this great new track. This last week of the year, it’s the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. Let’s turn The Tide into a tidal wave!

Virgins At Heart – Show Me
Virgins At Heart are a Stockholm-based indie-pop band, consisting of Gustav Rosén (bass, vocals), Anders Nordström (guitars, vocals), Johan Bjurling (keys, vocals), and Jonas Tyrestad (drums, vocals). Bjurling is also the main producer. Although the quartet have been playing together since the early 2000s, they started to record ‘in a more serious fashion’ only recently. Their debut album 2 2 Tango wasn’t released until 2016.
Since then, the band has gone in overdrive. Second album Safety Lagoon came out earlier this year, along with three single to help promote it. Only two weeks ago, brand-new track Miseryproof saw the light. Hot on the heels of that song’s video, they now follow-up with Show Me. An energetic tune with an unmistakable ‘80s vibe and a catchy chorus. Keep an eye (or better: an ear) on them!

Tones & I – Never Seen The Rain
Talking about pop stars that come out of nothing… Last year, 19-year-old Australian singer and songwriter Toni Watson was busking the streets, and now she has a worldwide hit under her belt. Dance Monkey, the second single she released as Tones & I, reached #1 in over 30 countries. Probably because of the infectious piano (which resembles the overlooked Closer by Lemaitre) and her distinctive vocals. The song smashed records across the board. In her home country, she now holds the record for most weeks at #1 in the modern rock era (1955-present), with 20 weeks.
Obviously, she unintentionally (and probably unexpectedly) set the bar high for its follow-up. However, Never Seen The Rain is graced with an equally simple and catch piano. On top of that, its chorus has an even higher sing-along factor. She explains: “It’s about people who live the same repetitive life in fear of failure. So, they never try.”
It’s unfair to expect this new single to reach the same heights as Dance Monkey. On the other hand, Tones & I is very unlikely to end up a one hit wonder. Just check her debut EP The Kids Are Coming for more future gems.

Spo Dee O Dee – Colours [2019 Version]
In 1988, singer/guitarist Ross Curry, bass player Ralph Brink and drummer Jan Holtman formed Spo Dee O Dee. The Dutch rock band took its name from one of the first prototypical rock ‘n’ roll songs: 1946’s Drinkin’ Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee by Stick McGhee. That was named after the alcoholic fruit drink ‘spodi’, a cocktail of red wine and bourbon. In the early ‘90s, they got more and more popular in the live circuit and on alternative radio stations. Their debut album Goin’ Walkabout was produced by Richard Jansen of legendary Dutch rock outfit Fatal Flowers.
For their third album, Spo Dee O Dee got the chance to record in Dublin with U2 producer Flood. Because of equipment failure however, the band returned home without any recordings. In 1995, they called it a day.
Fast forward to 2019. Spo Dee O Dee are back together and will start a comeback tour through the Netherlands in January 2020. As a warming-up, they re-recorded one of their first singles, 1991’s Colours. Still a great song with international class. I hope the world is ready for them now!

ZZ Ward – Sex And Stardust
Zsuzsanna Eva Ward is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, who plays guitar, piano, and harmonica. To her fans, she’s known as ZZ. Born in Abington, Pennsylvania, she spent her childhood listening to her father’s blues collection and her brother’s hip hop records. As an artist in her own right, she blends these genres with rock, R&B, and neo-soul. If you’re a fan of Elle King, Gin Wigmore, Bishop Briggs and/or Meg Myers, this is for you!
Her new single Sex And Stardust is about being under someone’s spell in a relationship. For the video, she took inspiration from the legendary film director Quentin Tarantino.

Don’t Bring Stacey – Changed My Hair
Australia isn’t just a country. It’s a whole continent, the size of Europe. However, it only counts 25 million inhabitants. That makes its enormous amount of musical talent even more impressive. And it makes the number of acts that break through abroad only more disappointing. Hopefully, their home country is big enough for these artists to make a decent living off their art.
Although Don’t Bring Stacey only released two singles so far, I dare giving them the ‘talent’ stamp. Angus Purvis, Jordy Schumacher and Nik Rallis share a mutual love for blues, skating and lemonade and formed surf-rock trio Don’t Bring Stacey in May 2019. They just followed-up their first ever track Everybody Knows with Changed My Hair. They call it ‘A tongue in cheek exploration of low self-esteem, a rather eventful mental breakdown and the following rise to self-empowerment. Basically a breakup song’.
