Malory feat. Yseult – Morceaux De Toi
Originally from Madagascar, Yohann Malory (35) is a well-known French composer. He wrote songs for artists like Jenifer, M. Pokora, and Louane. After releasing four singles under his own name in 2019, he just put out his first mixtape Métropole Blues. Among the 11 tracks are collaborations with Claire Laffut, Holybrune, Hok and S.Pri Noir.
Morceaux De Toi (which translates as ‘pieces of you’) is Malory’s new single. The track features singer-songwriter and model Yseult. It’s so sultry and seductive, it could only have been made in France.

Charmless i – Superhero
Dutch rock band Charmless i appear to have found their definitive sound on their new single Superhero. That sound is a great blend of things they tried on their first two EP’s. Their debut EP First Coming had an electro feel with organic instruments added, while successor Next Level sort of reversed that approach.
New single Superhero is the most catchy danceable rock song of the year, so far. A track with equal parts guitar licks, juicy synths and pounding electronic drums. But it’s the pumping organic rhythm section, the ‘hey hey hey’ shouts and the Sympathy For The Devil-like ‘Woo-hoo’s that add the swagger to it.
A great tune and a promising start of the campaign that will result in the release of the band’s third EP. Make Me Wanna is scheduled for release in June.

Lux Lyall – Mad With The Moon
London-based songwriter-poet Lux Lyall draws elements of old Hollywood noir charm and alt-pop. She only released her first single Teeth in July 2019. Less than a year later, on 24 April, she’ll put out her debut album VAMP. A collection full of emotion, drenched in dark and decadent theatrical tones. She calls the long-player ‘a document of my (relatively unstable) personal journey so far’. “Music anchors me”, she says. “It’s how I try to keep a grip on things and make sense of myself.”
Her beautiful new single Mad With The Moon is no different. It manages to combine delicate guitars, tasteful piano, stunning orchestral tones and sultry vocals, without going over the top. Lux explains: “I started writing Mad With The Moon after coming out of a terrible relationship. It began as a heart-breaky ballad, but over time it’s shifted from being about a break-up to being my way of refusing to apologise for my determination. It became progressively faster and angrier and ended up as a ‘fuck you’ song. If anyone I’m dating can’t keep up with me that’s on them.”

The Snuts – Fatboy Slim
It didn’t take Scottish indie darlings The Snuts a long time to become live staples. Just one recent example: they sold out the only Scottish date (9 May in Edinburgh) on their upcoming tour in just six seconds. Nicely timed for that tour, they’ll put out the new 8-track Mixtape EP on 13 March. It will feature five singles alongside three interludes.
One of those singles is called Fatboy Slim. A real indie stomper, with more than one reference to the titular superstar DJ, most obviously in the chorus. Packed with hooks, it’s got a groove that will drive even the most reluctant to the dancefloor. Speaking of the track, lead singer Jack Cochrane said: “The song is a nod to the nostalgic subculture of live music across the UK in the ‘90s and similar decades. Toying with the idea of sampled drum loops and an electronic music styled structure the track is intended to pay homage to Fatboy Slim’s notorious set at Brighton beach almost 15 years ago.”

Mystery Jets – Petty Drone
Mystery Jets’ upcoming album A Billion Heartbeats was originally due last year. It was postponed however, after singer Blaine Harrison had to undergo emergency surgery. It will now be released on 3 April.
Four tracks off the album have already been issued as singles. They are now collected on the EP Petty Drone, including the previously unreleased title track, which is their new single. It’s a call to arms, thick with the melodies of ‘70s Queen and what the band describe as a kind of ‘psychedelic anger’. The song’s lyrics were inspired by the Adam Curtis film HyperNormalisation, and the modern phenomenon of surveillance capitalism: “Ostracised, de-nationalised, re-categorised… polarised, de-sensitised….”

Wildcard (week 5):
Alex The Astronaut – I Think You’re Great
A talented soccer player, Alexandra Lynn moved from Sydney to New York on a soccer scholarship in 2017. She studied Math and Physics at Long Island University, while turning her experiences into folk-inflected pop songs. Under the name Alex The Astronaut she released her first EP To Whom It May Concern. Follow-up single Not Worth Hiding was a frank letter to her 16-year-old self about gender and sexuality. It became an unofficial anthem of the Australian gay marriage referendum.
Her new single I Think You’re Great was produced by Sam Cromack and Daniel Hanson of Ball Park Music. It’s a shout out to a cherished friendship and a recognition of the need to check in on each other, opening up conversations and supporting friends through thick and thin. In the accompanying video, Alex waits tables serving demanding customers at a busy diner. When her shift finally ends, she heads home for a night of wine and board games with friends.
Mid-March, Alex The Astronaut will appear at US showcase festival SXSW. This will be followed by dates with label mates Jack River and Didirri in Los Angeles, Brooklyn NY, and Toronto. But this week already, her new single is the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. I think it’s great!

Halsey – 3AM
Ashley Nicolette Frangipane chose an anagram of her first name as her stage name. Since then, we know her as Halsey. She started her career like so many others, by uploading covers on YouTube. But unlike so many others, she succeeded in becoming massively popular with her own songs as well. New Americana, off her debut album Badlands, was her first worldwide hit, in 2015.
Less than five years later, she released her third long-player Manic. 3AM is my favourite track on it. A tune full of ’90s rock nostalgia and killer drums, played by by Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith.
The song, which details Halsey’s insecurities after a night of drinking, ends with a voicemail message. It says: “Your best song is the song that’s currently on the radio. How many people can say that? That their best song was the one that’s currently about to be a massive hit. It’s already a hit. It’s just gonna get more massive. How many people can say it? Not very many. Congratulations!” On twitter, the singer revealed this was a real voicemail, left by… John Mayer. In his message, he predicted the success of her single Without Me, before it was a hit. It went on to become her biggest single yet.

Jack River – Dark Star
Australia should be in the news because of its staggering amount of musical talent. Alas, the devastating bushfires currently dominate the headlines. Jack River (the alias of 28-year-old Holly Rankin) unites both subjects. Apart from being a successful musician, she’s been on the frontline of the climate crisis fight. She hosted a panel of climate experts in Sydney last spring. Also, she performed to 80K people there in the autumn for School Strike for Climate. Since Carte Blanche Music isn’t a political platform, I’ll just focus on her musical activities.
In March, Jack River will be one of quite a few Aussie talents to play showcase festival SXSW in Austin, Texas. In an ideal world, her new single Dark Star would be a big hit by then. The track sees her tapping into long-past feelings, when she sings of the dark obsession underlying young love. River intended it to be ‘a racy, guitar-y, sentimental song that made you feel like you’re driving past your ex’s house’. While writing it, she imagined a song that replicated the feeling of ‘having your heart dragged through the room while listening to Oasis’. This information adds a whole new dimension to enjoying the tune, doesn’t it?
Dark Star is the third and final single to be released ahead of Jack River’s upcoming Stranger Heart EP. It’ll be out on Valentine’s Day.

Lilly Hiatt – Brightest Star
The first time Lilly and John Hiatt appeared on one record, was on a Record Store Day release in 2019. On one side, John covered his daughter’s All Kinds Of People, while Lilly tackled her father’s You Must Go on the flip. However, on her upcoming album Walking Proof (due out 27 March), he makes a proper appearance. The track Some Kind Of Drug marks his first guest spot on one of his daughter’s albums.
Brightest Star is the long-player’s first single. It’s an irresistible piece of jangle-rock that doesn’t hide her Nashville roots. An empowering song about walking through life’s darkest moments of insecurity and self-doubt. “So give ’em hell, kid, don’t worry about the rest of it, let it roll”, Lilly Hiatt sings. “The brightest star in my whole sky is you.”
The video is shot at the singer’s favourite Nashville tattoo shop, Electric Hand Tattoo.
