Alice Offley – Pour (Your Love On Me)
Do you like disco, funk and other kinds of feel-good music? Think Prince, Kylie Minogue, Chic, Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, Billy Ocean or Moloko⌠If so, youâre in good company. Alice Offley loves them as well. And she knows what sheâs talking about. She happens to be a cousin of Dusty Springfield, and credits her family for her love of soul and disco music.
As a professional musician and singing bass player, she shared the stage with the likes of Thompson Twins, Tricky and Cyndi Lauper. Having toured internationally with bands and solo since she was a teenager, she built a great live reputation.
As said, Offley is a solo artist as well. Her day job is singing and playing piano in London bars. In 2020, she put out two singles, which are now followed by new track Pour (Your Love On Me). A sultry disco stomper with funky guitars and, obviously, a prominent bassline.
Offley says about the tune: âIâd written a fair few songs about heartbreak and loss, and I wanted to focus my next batch of material on happier subjects. Pour is about lots of feel-good things in life – from new love to sugar, angel delight, dancing, drinking, and fun!â

Sunday Hunter – Illogical Sphere
If I didnât convince you of the huge amount of musical talent in Australia yet, this is the right week for you to change your mind. Brisbane-based singer-songwriter/musician Sunday Hunter is another fine example. After fronting pop/rock bands and electronic/experimental duos, sheâs now honing her craft as a producer and solo artist. Her own unique blend of modern alternative pop sounds includes gritty guitar riffs, sweeping synths, punchy beats and disparate vocals.
Sunday just put out Illogical Sphere, her fourth single as a solo artist. She wrote and produced it herself, with Jason Millhouse helping out with mixing and mastering. It starts with a dreamy melodic guitar riff, which then transitions into a more rigid rock-like guitar sound combined with buzzing bass synths.
âIllogical Sphere is about losing grip on reality and getting stuck in a cycle of illogical thought and behaviourâ, says Sunday. âThe illogical sphere is an analogy for the whole world being an illogical place driving us all a little crazy.â

Jillie – Time Of Our Lives
Jill Goldberg was born and raised in New Jersey, where she always participated in music. Whether she played clarinet and trumpet in a band or wrote instrumental piano songs. In college, she started singing as well, when she joined an a cappella group. Soon, she also started arranging the songs for the group.
After graduating with a Bachelors degree in music theory, she moved to New York to work in television. It was while living there that she started writing her own songs and performing her music live. She continued to do so after relocating to Chicago, where Jillie is now known as a badass piano bar entertainer.
In 2021, the singer-songwriter released 11 singles, gaining over 100.000 streams and over a thousand new followers. All of these songs were directly made available on streaming services as well, bar one⌠Time Of Our Lives, arguably the strongest song of the bunch, has been available on Bandcamp since 25 October. But only now, four months later, it is released on a larger scale. Jillie wrote, performed and produced the track herself at home, and features the talent of musicians she found online around the world.
Time Of Our Lives is a well-crafted pop song with beautiful vocal and piano melodies throughout.

Hope D – Hate Goodbyes
The last time I wrote about Brisbane-based Hope Defteros was in the spring of 2020. Around that same time, she also posted a video with a live acoustic version of Hate Goodbyes. Two years later, a newly recorded studio version is her new single. The origins of the song go back even longer. Hope says she wrote the track in 2018 about a romance that was âconstantly ending and starting againâ.
Hope D explains: “It was difficult to come to the realisation that we shouldnât be together and just call it off completely, but the thought of that final goodbye was so unbearable that we continuously kept the relationship going after it would end. I would come to terms with the reality that we were only together because it was painful not to be, which caused spirals, emotional shut offs, and yet again another breakup.â
Hate Goodbyes is an energetic, shiny pop-rock track thatâll do well during Hopeâs upcoming Australian tour.

Minerva Daisy – Something Strange
Minerva Hibbert is an independent 20-year-old alternative pop singer based in Manchester, who goes by the stage name Minerva Daisy. Born to a very creative family, she took up piano lessons at the age of 6. A few years later, she slowly progressed onto song-writing and began performing as a professional singer, songwriter and keyboardist at age 16. Minerva currently studies at the British Institute of Modern Music. Sheâs influenced by powerful female musicians like Etta James, Nina Simone, Florence & The Machine, P!nk, Lily Allen and Kate Nash, as well as artists such as Hozier and Queen. As you might expect, her own music is a tasteful mix of rock, pop, soul and jazz.
Pop-rock anthem Something Strange is only her fourth single, and her darkest track to date. This is a result of the story behind it. Minerva explains: âSomething Strange was written as an emotional outlet almost immediately after I found out an ex partner had been unfaithful to me. This is probably one of the most raw and brutally emotional tracks that I have written and so I wanted the instrumentation to reflect that and give the track the punch it needed.â
With hard-hitting drums, distorted piano melodies, powerful lyrics and some gritty guitars and synth, her mission is accomplished. A catchy, upbeat and dynamic song that deserves a large audience.

Hollie Col – Seasick
Hollie Col is a Sydney-based singer-songwriter whose loveable charm translates into instantly likeable songs. Heavily inspired by artists such as Taylor Swift, Maggie Rogers and Haim, she makes guitar-infused pop. Her self-directed music videos, emphasis on storytelling and LGBTQIA+ representation already brought her an army of fans. Thatâs likely to grow further with the release of her latest track.
Following her previous single Reruns, her new song Seasick is co-written and produced by Dylan Nash (Dean Lewis and Angus & Julia Stone). It has a timeless quality to it and has an ultra memorable chorus.
Hollie says about it: âI wrote this song with Dylan Nash about a back and forth relationship, and how nauseating it can feel to be stuck on someone you just want to get over. I think itâs almost comical how often we lie to ourselves about our own feelings or get frustrated at ourselves for crushing over someone we do NOT want to be crushing over.â

Slowly Slowly – Nothing On
Nothing On is easily Slowly Slowlyâs poppiest song yet. With this track, the Melbourne pop-rockers move in a tight, sing-along bubblegum pop direction. I like them all the better for it. Self-produced by front man Ben Stewart, the drums and guitars sound more polished than ever. Mixer Jonathan Gilmore (who worked with The 1975, Nothing But Thieves and beabadoobee before) deserves credits for that as well. Nothing On marks the first taste of new music from the band this year.
Stewart explains this song is about the world stopping and getting the chance to repair things that had gone unsaid or been swept up in the everyday, for some time. âI was locked up in a house and for the first time was forced to look at what I had become – how Iâd lost the fun side of myself. Itâs a nod to the bittersweet nature of the last 2 years. Itâs been so difficult and yet such a period of growth. Most of the music Iâve written in this period has an upbeat feel to it in a desperate attempt to remember that feeling. I donât think I could have handled writing a bleak sounding record and so this song, like many to come, detail very complicated, painful situations housed in fun exteriors. Even if you choose to just scratch the surface, Nothing On is highly addictive. We have been listening to it for months now and weâre still not sick of it.â

Anna Sofia â No. 5
When I first wrote about Anna Sofia, over two years ago, she was only 16 years old. In the meantime, the Toronto singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist released three EPâs, followed by five singles in 2021. All of them reflecting on life, describing the drama of becoming an adult in a brutally honest way.
No. 5 is her first single of the year. It sees Anna Sofia facing fears and acknowledging the internal work it requires to be brave enough to face it. Musically, as always, itâs a hyper modern track, which manages to capture an atmosphere of nostalgia as well. In this case, itâs the synth drum which throws us back to the â80s.
Anna Sofia says about the track: âNo. 5 is a song about fears. Big ones and little ones. In this song I speak about all my fears from spiders, to not being good enough for anyone. I have always been one to avoid my fears but this song reminds me to face them instead.â

Wildcard (week 7):
Barks IV & I.Am.Em – Hittin’ It
Itâs not always easy to find any interesting information about the artists I feature at Carte Blanche Music. Especially when it looks like the acts are doing their best to maintain a mysterious profile. Obviously, my ultimate goal is to introduce you to the best new music, not to âexposeâ artists against their will. On the other hand, having been a radio DJ for 30 years, I know itâs fun to play a great song, but equally satisfying to be able to give some nice background info. So I did some diggingâŚ
Turns out, Iâve been writing about Barks IV before. His real name is Bjarke Sørensen, born in Denmark, but currently working from Berlin, Germany. He used to be in the band The Dead-On, who had to change their name to The New Madness due to legal issues. I recommended their debut single Lovesick back in 2017. Nowadays, Sørensen is a producer and A&R at Deadly Tunes, a company thatâs specialized in producing and licensing music for commercials and TV.
I.Am.Em is the artist name of American artist, singer-songwriter and music producer Emmery Williams. Sheâs currently residing in Nashville, Tennessee. Her LinkedIn profile states: âA multifaceted pianist, I.Am.Em thrives in providing top quality productions for artists & music synchronizationâ. Her Instagram bio adds: âPlacements on TV, Filmâ.
Now, Barks IV and I.Am.Em found each other in song and mission. Hittinâ It is a top-notch tune with a great beat and swinging vocals. To me, it immediately brought back memories of Neneh Cherry. And did they succeed âsynchronizationâ-wise? Oh yeah, they did. You can hear the song in the Netflix series âTwentysomethings: Austinâ. Mission accomplished on every level. Good story, brilliant song!
Oh, and hereâs another âplacementâ: Hittinâ It by Barks IV & I.Am.Em is our new Wildcard. This means itâll feature at the top of the Carte Blanche Music blog for a full week.
