Talk In Code – Young Loveâs Dream
Quite honestly, Talk In Code are not the most prolific band in the world. But I can only praise their âquality over quantityâ approach. Following a debut EP in 2008 and a single in 2012, they put out their eponymous debut album in 2014. None of these are to be found on the streaming platforms, except for the single Make It Happen off said album. In 2018, their second album Resolve followed.
After a slew of singles in 2020, the next year may appear to have been a lot quieter. Thatâs not true, however. The UK quartet spent 2021 well, playing festivals and gigs, and preparing their third long-player. This new album, The Big Screen, is set for release on 11 February.
First single Young Loveâs Dream is out now. Itâs a radio-friendly â80s flavoured pop song. The band state it âexplores the themes of childhood hope and possibility before life presents its many twists and turns and we go our separate ways from those we love⊠or do we???â
Iâve read a lot of comparisons with other artists, ranging from Pet Shop Boys and The Killers to Daft Punk and The 1975. Iâd say Talk In Code is very likely to appeal to fans of Coldplay and M83. But hey, why donât you decide for yourself?

PĂ€ter – Fan Fan Fan
Iâll be honest with you. To me, as a music lover, itâs all about the song. Always has been that way, even tens of years before the introduction of streaming. As a consequence, I love many songs, but there arenât many artists Iâd call myself a fan of. Even the artists Iâm most fond of put out shitty music from time to time, in my opinion. Theyâre only human after all.
Yet, by the looks of it, itâs fair to say Iâm a fan of PĂ€terâs. Sheâs an upcoming Canadian artist with only 15 songs in her repertoire, but I like them all. Partly because of the great variety between those tunes. Theyâre all different. Unbelievable how many musical styles a young artist like her masters. Take her new single, for instance. Itâs called Fan Fan Fan, and spoiler alert: itâs not about me (and not about a ventilator either) đ.
Parmida (PĂ€terâs real name) says about it: âFan Fan Fan was written from the point of unrequited love when you’ve cried every last tear, lost every last minute of sleep and things start to get a bit topsy turvy. There’s a deliriousness to it. I wrote this when I was feeling particularly stubborn about a relationship that wasn’t going my way. It let me release the tension around it and laugh at myself a bit. I think if you’ve ever been there, you’ll understand the melodrama of this song. It feels that dramatic when you’re in it.â
Not only is Fan Fan Fan a fun (fun fun) song, but thereâs some seriously incredible singing going on in the middle section as well. Another great addition to a catalogue thatâs highly recommended to check out. You could start with the tracks below and then dive in deeperâŠ

Novustory – Love Me Too
Novustory are an alt-rock band with their own studio, who love crashing guitars and pounding drums. Yet, their melodies are accessible in a Nothing But Thieves or Yonaka kind of way.
The four-piece did three European tours, combining concerts in venues and gigs on the streets. This way, theyâve built themselves a dedicated community of fans.
Love Me Too is Novustoryâs anthemic new single. It was produced by Cecil Adam Bartlett (U2, Biffy Clyro). The track deals with the struggle the band has faced over years of trying to âmake it in the music industryâ. But it can also be interpreted as a love song, a plea even, to the second member of a failing relationship.

Naked Face – If In Doubt
In 2017, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Steve âSlikâ met drummer Nathan âStoneâ in Melbourne, in a band he had auditioned for. They clicked and decided to form a band of their own. Two years later, UK-born Eddy âSeagoonâ, who had recently moved from Sydney, joined them as guitarist and singer. In August 2020, during the height of COVID-19, Naked Face released their debut single Beach Punk.
If In Doubt is only the trioâs third single. A melodic rock song that deals with insecurity and the struggle against it. It features a good old guitar solo and a bass line that bears a slight resemblance to Nirvanaâs Come As You Are.

The Last Broadcast (feat. Shannon Farmer) – Daisy
Most music reflects the era it was released in, or the era it was inspired by. But some music has a more timeless feeling to it. The Last Broadcastâs debut single Daisy is such a song.
The Last Broadcast is the band of front man Kyle McGurk and drummer Paolo Lombardo. They call it âa coming of age projectâ and âa vehicle to navigate the rocky transition from youth to adulthoodâ. On the one hand, their lyrics often contain an element of doubt. On the other hand however, resolve comes in the form of sunny melodies and big choruses. The band is influenced by â90s and â00s acts like New Radicals, John Mayer and David Gray, and contemporaries such as Wolf Alice.
On the surface, The Last Broadcastâs first single Daisy sounds like an upbeat song with a certain melancholy. This is largely caused by the rollicking drums and uplifting piano melody, while featuring mournful horns at the same time. But underneath this, the track wrestles with grief, trauma, love and validation. The song was written as early as 2018, but it underwent a remarkable transformation under producer Ryan Pinsonâs guidance. The final version also features guest vocals from Shannon Farmer, the front woman of alt-pop band Dame. This takes it to the next level.
A wonderful debut!

Dubstar – Token
In the second half of the â90s, electro-pop band Dubstar scored hits with tunes like Stars, No So Manic Now and â my favourite â Anywhere. Four years after they made their comeback with the album One, theyâre about to release a new long-player. Entitled Two (who couldâve guessed?), it will be out on 6 May. All four singles Sarah Blackwood and Chris Wilkie released since One will be on it.
Token is the latest track to be unleashed ahead of the new record. Pet Shop Boys being one of my all-time favourite acts, it truly made my heart jump. The songâs credits prove otherwise, but this could have been a track written by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. I think long-time Pet Shop Boys collaborator Stephen Hague, who co-produced Token, is to thank for this. I also hear echoes of The Eurythmicsâ There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart) in it, by the way.
All in all, this is a great synthpop song that makes me wish itâd be May already.

Bugs – In the Middle (Of It)
Iâm not too much of a fan of bugs, especially when it comes to computer software or apps. But music is the exception to the rule. In that case, I love Bugs. The band, that is. Once the best-kept secret of their hometown Brisbane, but nowadays an Australia-wide phenomenon.
25 March, the trio will release their third album Cooties. It contains 10 tracks, half of which have already been put forward as singles. The latest, In The Middle (Of It), follows Old Youth Feeling, Diamond, Decisions, and Commitments & Plans. As always, itâs another one of their heartfelt, honest and relatable rock songs. Energetic and incredibly catchy!
Front man Connor Brooker says about the new track: âItâs a yearning track about feeling like youâre always the second option for someone. The to and fro internally while trying to figure out where you stand with someone can be so confusing. Itâs kind of just an internal dialogue I had while being effectively lead on by someone already in a relationship.â

Patina – Langsomt Sind
Patina is a Danish band where all three members sing, and play drums and percussion. In 2019, they released the EP Selvudgivne Singler, which, as the title implies, contained the bandâs self-released singles so far. It closed one chapter and opened another: the one of their break-through. In 2020, they were nominated for a talent award by popular radio station P3, where Patinaâs hit Flammer Rammer was the most played song of the year.
12 months ago, the band released their debut album DrĂžmmefanger (âDream Catcherâ), but now, itâs time for brand-new music. Langsomt Sind (âSlow Mindâ) is Patinaâs new single and itâs nothing short of brilliant. Full disclosure: like most of you, I donât understand a word of what they sing. But if this song proves one thing, itâs that this doesnât need to hinder appreciating the tune. Langsomt Sind is an upbeat, guitar-driven track thatâs great to sing along to (even if only phonetically).

Wildcard (week 6):
Tommy – Alive
So far, Leicester was well-known as the town artists like Kasabian, John Deacon (Queen), Diesel Park West and John Illsley (Dire Straits) came from. Indie quartet Arcades had their roots in Leicester as well. Following the split of the band, former front man Tommy Cobley is now starting his own project, Tommy.
Cobley spent the last eighteen months crafting an albumâs worth of songs. About this productivity, he says: âI couldn’t stop writing and when it came to recording, I knew these songs were special.â That can certainly be said about his debut single Alive. Itâs a typically British tune with a nostalgic bagginess. Richard Ashcroft was the name that first popped up when I heard the track.
Apart from the prominent acoustic guitar and walking bass line, a few things stand out: the lively percussion, trumpet licks (performed by The Twang drummer Ash Sheehan), and the gospel vocals by powerhouse Ange Lloyd. The song was produced by legendary producer Gavin Monaghan (Editors, Ocean Colour Scene, Robert Plant). Indeed, âteam Tommyâ is pretty impressive.
A great start of Cobleyâs solo career! We thought weâd lend a hand by chosing Tommyâs debut single Alive as this weekâs Carte Blanche Music Wildcard.
