Wildcard (week 13):
Päter – 4-7 Company
In the over seven years of Carte Blanche Music’s existence, Toronto talent Päter is one of the artists we featured most. She came on our radar in 2020 with her single Sleep, and many playful and youthful songs followed. Apart from her great and very varied songwriting, she stands out with her self-created colourful videos and overall original presence on social media.
Now, make way for Päter 2.0. In the wake of her debut album 4-7 Company, to be released on 4 April, our favourite Canadian reinvented herself. She’s produced a really grown-up body of work, which – to be honest – I hadn’t expected (yet). That’s meant to be a compliment, by the way. Don’t expect an easy listening/middle of the road album, but a self-confident record by an artist who will go only one way: her own.
The variety in Päter’s songwriting remained, but she added an extra layer on top and below. Supported by some wonderful musicians, she gives us the best she has to offer. The album’s title track, her new single, is a fine example. It has a beautiful string arrangement, wonderful vocal melodies, and it manages to be melancholic and uplifting at the same time.
She should have been a super star for long. But for those who were still in doubt: Päter is ready to make the spotlights her new habitat!
4-7 Company is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Wildcard (week 12):
Kid Kapichi – Can EU Hear Me?
Kid Kapichi are a punk band from Hastings, Great Britain. They just released their third album There Goes The Neighbourhood, which was produced by Nothing But Thieves member Dom Craik. It introduces us to their view on the world today, and that’s not necessarily an optimistic one, to put it mildly. More to the point, it captures the zeitgeist of the dissatisfying reality of living in the UK in 2024. Lyrically, the songs denounce ‘grey Britain’ and small-island thinking. Surely, not a message everyone will want to hear.
The long-player was preceded by four great singles, but one album track really stands out for me. This track, with a sound halfway Ian Dury and The Hives, is called Can EU Hear Me? Obviously, that’s not a typo in there. It’s a punch in the face of Brexit. “The worst thing that’s happened to this country in quite some time”, according to the song.
Still, the band manages to address the subject with the dry sense of humour and wit we’ve come to know from them. “You can’t just separate a tectonic plate, mate”, Jack Wilson sings.
On the website of the Union State venue in Washington DC, the vocalist further explains: “The brief was, ‘Let’s write the happiest Brexit song we can’! It’s sad to see it, but we make a big effort to make sure that whoever we meet over there knows that it doesn’t represent the country as a whole. That’s what this song is all about.”
Although it’s not a single (yet), Kid Kapichi’s Can EU Hear Me? is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Wildcard (week 11):
Lauren Mayberry – Change Shapes
I’ve always been a huge fan of Scottish electro-pop trio Chvrches. Their first two albums, especially, are amongst my favourites of the ‘10s. Following the band’s most recent album Screen Violence, from 2021, singer Lauren Mayberry announced her solo career. She promised her own material would be ‘fun, freaky, sad, weird and joyful’. At last year’s solo gigs, she showcased numerous unreleased tracks, alongside covers of Madonna, Depeche Mode, The 1975 and Texas.
Last autumn, Mayberry put out her first two singles under her own name, Are You Awake? and Shame. Change Shapes is her third and best solo effort so far. She co-wrote it with Cleo Tighe, Evan Blair and Matt Koma (who also produced the cut). Led by a groovy, pulsating bassline, it’s a propulsive, powerful pop anthem. It sees Mayberry railing against the expectations put on her as a woman, and how her efforts as a feminist are constantly undermined by those who think she’s doing both too much and not enough.
Change Shapes by Lauren Mayberry is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.
