Wildcard (week 17):
Rachel Chinouriri – It Is What It Is
Rachel Chinouriri is about to release her debut album What A Devastating Turn Of Events. The follow-up to her debut mini album Four° In Winter hardly comes unnoticed, though. So far, the hotly tipped London-based singer-songwriter preceded it with three promotional tracks. Ehm, correction, single #4, It Is What It Is, just came out. It’s the last single to be released before the long-player hits on 3 May.
It Is What It Is is based on a thumping bass line, some infectious whistling and Chinouriri’s cheeky, chatty speak-singing à la Kate Nash and Lily Allen. The song channels Rachel’s frustrations about being messed around by a potential partner, featuring voice notes from friends reminding her to know her worth. It was co-written by Leroy Clampitt, who also co-produced it with Rich Turvey (Blossoms, The Courteeners, The Coral). All in all, It Is What It Is sounds like the final stage of her major break-through.
“Well, I was definitely in a petty mood,” Chinouriri says of the new single. “It’s interesting because humans are full of flaws and I have the privilege of going through therapy, which has massively helped me with my self development journey. However there are those moments where you want to be so petty because someone’s done you wrong. (…) It’s a big F U to them as I’ve discovered how much I deserve. I just feel annoyed I never got to say what I wanted and that’s fine… I have this song instead :-)”
It Is What It Is: Rachel Chinouriri holds the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Wildcard (week 16):
RedHook – Breaking Up With
RedHook are lead vocalist Emmy Mack, guitarist Craig Wilkinson, drummer Alex Powys and bassist Ned Jankovic. They label themselves as ‘screaming rap rock electro pop mutants’. Their sound has been compared to bands such as Bring Me The Horizon, Paramore and Twenty One Pilots.
The Australian rock band from Sydney formed in 2017, but only released their debut album Postcard From A Living Hell in April 2023. Since then, they’re on a roll. The year was jam-packed with their biggest ever Australian tour and many festival gigs, followed by a European tour. Nevertheless, Breaking Up With is their fourth brand-new single following the long-player.
It’s an energetic track with funk grooves, lashings of horns, heavy guitars, plenty electronic elements and huge singalong hooks. To complete the party rock vibe, it contains a fiery saxophone solo. Lyrically, the song is about letting go of self-sabotaging thoughts and self-destructive behaviour. ‘I’m breaking up with myself’.
In the words of Emmy Mack: “Rather than revelling in being a total piece of shit, this one is about breaking that cycle of self-hate, forgiving your past mistakes, and just deciding to be bloody kinder to yourself.”
Breaking Up With by RedHook is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, so it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Wildcard (week 15):
Lola Young – Big Brown Eyes
Lola Young is a 23-year-old singer and songwriter from South East London who doesn’t wear her heart on her sleeve. Her star has been on the rise the last few years. Hence her nomination for the Brit Award for Rising Star in 2021. That same year, she was invited to sing on a cover version of ‘80s classic Together In Electric Dreams for the John Lewis Christmas advert. The next year, she ended fourth in the BBC Sound Of 2022.
Young’s appeal comes from her unique style, vocals and personality. She combines honest and clever lyrics, a raw yet soulful voice and an energetic delivery. All ingredients are there to make 2024 the year of this talent’s big break-through.
Following last year’s album My Mind Wanders And Sometimes Leaves Completely, Young is now working on its follow-up. Big Brown Eyes is the fourth single to be released ahead of it. The verses have a laid-back, reggae-like feel. To give you an idea, imagine a mix of Bob Marley and The Police. In the infectious choruses however, the tempo is doubled, driven by live drums. What a banger!
Sounds like a fun song to play (and go and see) live. Well, you might be lucky. Young is currently on a European tour, and will head to the US in August to play the Lollapalooza festival.
This week, Big Brown Eyes by Lola Brown is the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for full seven days.
