Wildcard (week 22):
Girl Like That – Miss Midnight
The seven well-received singles Lucy Peer released from 2021 till 2023, left a good impression. With a bright future ahead of her, she decided it’s time for her next move. One that started with a rebranding. From now on, Peer will release her music as Girl Like That.
Bad Boys In Bands and Medicine Box were her first two singles under the new moniker. Three times lucky, her new tune is the strongest of them all. Miss Midnight is made for fans of Olivia Rodrigo, Nothing But Thieves and Paramore, and has the best of each to offer.
Punchy and fierce, the song taps into the obsessive nature of fandom. Exploring the emotions of a fanatical devotee, this femme fatale approaches relationships with a tilted view and brings to light the darkness behind them.
Miss Midnight is the first song off Girl Like That’s debut album, that will be out on 7 June.
This week, the single is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for a full seven days.

Wildcard (week 21):
renforshort – Getting Over You
In 2019, ren (the musical alter ego of Lauren Isenberg) debuted with her single Waves. A year later, she changed her stage name to renforshort. Since then, she collaborated with numerous other artists, beside releasing her own music.
Now, the Toronto-born singer-songwriter has released her eagerly anticipated third EP Clean Hands Dirty Water. Three of its six tracks have already been put forward as singles. Getting Over You is single #4. ‘It’s a way different vibe than any other song I’ve put out on this project’, renforshort says on her Instagram.
In an interview with Wonderland magazine the Canadian alt-pop star further elaborates about the tune. “I was really into this idea of writing a 70’s inspired bass forward, synth-y, piano-pop song. So, I spoke to Jeff Hazing before that session and we went over some references and ideas and came into this session with Midi Jones – who is exceptionally talented – and he perfectly captured what I wanted. We got to do a bunch of fun vocal production and experimented sounds I’d never used in my music. It felt like breath of fresh air to me.”
Although mid-tempo, Getting Over You has a high energy level. Well-crafted around her honeyed vocals, it’s catchy, melodic and yet edgy.
Getting Over You by renforshort is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Wildcard (week 20):
Role Model – Deeply Still In Love
Tucker Pillsbury started rapping in 2016 under the mononym Tucker. The next year, he changed his stage name to Role Model and switched from rapping to singing. Another year later, he signed a major label deal.
Pillsbury’s relatable and confessional lyrics are often about topics such as sex, mental health and relationships. Looks like he has a lot to write about these days, for in October 2023 he broke up with social media personality and model Emma Chamberlain.
On the surface, Role Model’s new single Deeply Still In Love appears to be full of summer vibes. With its energetic drums and happy guitar melodies, it sounds like an easy-going, strummy pop song. But make no mistake: lyrically, it’s a break-up song, as expected.
The tune precedes his new album Kansas Anymore, which will come out on 19 July.
