Wildcard (week 35):
Pet Shop Boys – Everybody Will Dance (B-side to Feel)
Not long before I starting choosing a ‘record of the week’, back in 1985, Pet Shop Boys released the original, Bobby Orlando produced version of West End Girls. It charted very modestly in Canada, but wasn’t officially released in the UK. Follow-up singles One More Chance and Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots Of Money) hardly fared any better. The duo’s decision to re-record their debut single proved to be a good one. At the end 1985, I made this new version my record of the week, and it went on to become a worldwide hit (I don’t claim any connection between those two events 😉).
Fast forward to 2024… To date, Pet Shop Boys amassed 18 of my weekly accolades. More than any other artist. Guess that makes them my all-time favourite act. This week, they add a 19th gong to their name, and it’s an extra special one this time…
Pet Shop Boys aren’t only known for their great singles. Their B-sides are often equally brilliant. In fact, most of their B-sides are better than other artists’ A-sides! Take for instance Paninaro (later a single in it’s own right), You Know Where You Went Wrong, Do I Have To?, Your Funny Uncle, Screaming, We’re The Pet Shop Boys, No Time For Tears… the list is endless.
Forty years into their career, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe never stopped delivering. No disrespect to their new single Feel, but I love it’s B-side Everybody Will Dance. A classic, hi-NRG Pet Shop Boys track, that has waited nine years to be released. It was written and demoed in 2015 during song-writing sessions prior to the recording of their album Super. However, they decided against recording it themselves because they felt it was ‘a little young’ for them. Tennant & Lowe intended to offer it to someone else instead. I’m glad they finally decided to put this gem out!
Everybody Will Dance by Pet Shop Boys is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Wildcard (week 34):
Telenova – Margot
Telenova are lead vocalist, songwriter and filmmaker Angeline Armstrong and multi-instrumentalists Edward Quinn and Joshua Moriarty. They produce sample driven alt-pop with prominent trip-hop and electronica influences and plenty of energy. I’ve been following Aussie trio ever since their first single Bones. In the three and a half years since then, they released an impressive number of great tracks and EP’s. Now, they add their full, self-produced debut album Time Is A Flower to that lot.
Four of its tracks have been released as singles prior to the album release. And now, Margot is the fifth single to promote the long-player. A song about people viewing others as gods, and the inevitable destruction that follows. Combining dark romanticism and alt pop, it’s an absolute album highlight to me.
Armstrong describes Margot as a multilayered metaphor. “Margot isn’t one woman. She’s symbolic of a person I have envied in others; seen in myself; longed to be like; run from being. Margot is about obsession, idealism, idolatry, longing, envy… it’s about trying to make gods out of people or ourselves and how that destroys us, because we can’t live up to that.”
The song doesn’t waste time on an intro and quickly adds a driving beat to turn into an insanely danceable tune. Other ear-catching elements are the trademark Telenova bassline, fasing guitars and Armstrong’s feather-light vocal delivery. A real gem!
Margot by Telenova is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Wildcard (week 33): Giant Killers – Around The Blocks [2024 Remake]
Strange as it may seem, the music industry isn’t always there to help talented artists create a career. Giant Killers – Jamie Wortley (guitar, keys, lead vocals) and Michael Brown (bass, keys, brass, vocals) – are only one recent example. Or… ‘recent’… This story starts in the 1990s. The duo were signed to the legendary MCA Records label in 1995, where they released two singles. Also, they played some major support gigs and appeared in high profile TV shows. Yet, their debut album never saw the light of day. It took them three decades to get their rights back and release the album, Songs For The Small Places, after all.
The band say about their new single: “Around The Blocks is our love song to the kind of communities we grew up in, and that shaped our outlook – it is an opus to the overlooked, and for those whose endeavours are more likely to end in failure, because they weren’t born with the right kind of head start in life, but pressing on anyway because there is no other option. To us, thematically it’s both personal and universal. This song was a live favourite back in the days when we were opening for Blur on their Country House tour or touring with Dr. Robert (Blow Monkeys) and Nick Heyward. That makes it especially thrilling for this song to get a 2024 make-over to bring it (hopefully) to new audiences.”
Around The Blocks is a timeless, beautifully produced and melodious track. Louder Than War described it as ‘the best song the Lightning Seeds never wrote’. Funnily, Giant Killers have recently been added to the line-up of Shiiine On Festival in November, on a bill that includes… the Lightning Seeds!
