Wildcard (week 39):
Chapell – When Sally Left
Alan Chapell is an expert in privacy for digital media. But more importantly for this blog, he’s an upcoming singer and songwriter to watch. His music has been streamed over 1,5 million times and counting. Influenced by the ‘80s and ‘90s, he prides himself on using small stories as a vehicle to paint broader messages about life. Storytelling drives both Chapell’s writing and his live show – drawing comparisons to Jonathan Richman and Elvis Costello.
Chapell’s live performances are gaining notoriety by the minute. He’s been invited to play with Gin Blossoms, Everclear, Lisa Loeb, Bighead Todd, Iron Butterfly and A Flock Of Seagulls, to name but a few.
A prolific artist, When Sally Left is Chapell’s 11th new track of this year so far. It’s a catchy tune about a girl who married at a young age to an older man. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t have a happy ending.
Is it a true story? We’ll probably never know. On Instagram, Chapell writes: “As a songwriter, I get to take certain liberties with the truth. Sometimes I make up an entire lyrical narrative as if from whole cloth. In many songs, I change details in order to the protect the innocent – and to help make sure I don’t get a punch in the nose from someone who’s unhappy with how I’ve depicted them. (: And sometimes, the story is entirely autobiographical – in that it all took place within the orbit of my social circle. (…) It’s kind of fun to keep everyone guessing….”
When Sally Left by Chapell is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. It will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Wildcard (week 38): Kenzy Peach – I Think I Get It Now
Kenzy Peach is a young and self-proclaimed ‘pop-rock freak’ from Portland, Oregon. Her career has only just started. She only released her debut single Come For Me on 5 January, a great way to kick off 2024. It was praised by Guitar World as ‘a delightfully spunky bit of pop’ with ‘massive hooks’. No pressure… 😉
Peach describes her work as a beacon for ‘big-hearted weirdos and unsettling women’. Her new single I Think I Get It Now is no exception. Even in the light of the early praise, it doesn’t disappoint. On the contrary, it raises the bar even further. An anthem of empowerment, I Think I Get It Now explores the disillusionment of recognizing a toxic relationship for what it truly is. Its lyrics deal with confrontation and moving beyond hurt, with the music tapping into the anger and emotional intensity of the words. The track echoes influences from No Doubt, Garbage and Metric.
I Think I Get it Now was recorded at Portland’s Jackpot Studios and produced by Zach Bloomstein with her live band (Joe O’Connor, Nicholas Boatright and K Cashion). Together, they managed to capture the raw energy that defines her sound. Punchy and energetic, it’s the soundtrack to all of your revenge fantasies.
I Think I Get It Now by Kenzy Peach is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Wildcard (week 37):
Francis On My Mind – Somebody Else But Me
Francesca Elena Nicolescu makes music as Francis On My Mind. The 21-year-old Romanian artist blends pop rhythms with ‘80s influences and a touch of electro vibes. She gained significant attention when she participated in the seventh season of ‘X Factor Romania’ in 2017, finishing third. After signing with Universal Music, she released numerous singles, amassing millions of streams. Swimming Pools in particular was a huge hit.
Her new single is likely to add to Francis’ popularity. Somebody Else But Me is a song about finding strength in a broken heart. A catchy and hopeful tune that’s both delicate and powerful. It shows that the end of a relationship can mean the start of something beautiful.
Somebody Else But Me by Francis On My Mind is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.
