Wildcard (week 51):
Tristan Armstrong – The Lonely Avenue
Over a decade in Toronto’s music scene has cemented Tristan Armstrong’s reputation as a skilled composer and lyricist. A founding member of The Actual Goners, he combines poignant introspection with a sense of earnest romanticism. This way, he creates songs that resonate deeply with listeners.
During the pandemic, Armstrong began crafting The Lonely Avenue, his first solo album, which will be available early 2025. It serves as both a creative outlet and a reflection of his evolving sound. Collaborating with Canadian guitar virtuoso Kevin Breit and producers Carlin Nicholson and Ryan Farley, Armstrong brings a fresh perspective to roots-rock while honouring its traditions.
The album’s title track is a cathartic release of rock-and-roll energy. He wrote it during his early days in Toronto after moving from Vancouver Island. Not surprisingly, The Lonely Avenue is inspired by the dualities of urban life and a longing for home. The song melds raucous rhythms with an undercurrent of melancholy, creating a dynamic sound that captures the bittersweet transition of leaving behind the familiar to chase a dream. Produced in part with John Dinsmore and recorded in Armstrong’s Toronto basement studio, the track features lush mellotron strings and chugging guitars that evoke both grit and nostalgia.
Armstrong explains: “I wanted this track to be a good time – a release of rock-and-roll abandon that’s cathartic for me and fun for listeners. The Lonely Avenue captures the energy of urban life and the yearning for something deeper.”
The Lonely Avenue by Tristan Armstrong is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. It will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Wildcard (week 51):
The Aces – Jealous
The Aces are a female quartet from Provo, Utah (US). In 2012, pre-teen sisters Cristal and Alisa Ramirez (lead vocals/guitar and drums), Katie Henderson (lead guitar/vocals), and McKenna Petty (bass) formed the Blue Aces. After being longtime friends, it didn’t take long for them to click as songwriters and musicians. Two years and two EPs later, the band name was shortened to The Aces.
With three albums under their belt, the band confidently carved out their unique space in the music scene, skillfully blending indie, pop, and rock into punchy, memorable tracks. After releasing their third album I’ve Loved You For So Long, last June, their stream count stands at 250 million.
Now, they’re back with a completely new song, Jealous, produced by Henderson. A groove-driven pop anthem with a funky guitar motif, driving kickdrums and falsetto harmonies, it’s a catchy modern funk tune. The band say about the track: “Jealous is about being the coolest person in the room. Many times that comes with adoration and envy, and we wanted to paint the picture of having unshakable confidence throughout all of it.”
Jealous by The Aces is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. It will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for the entire festive week.

Wildcard (week 50): Cyn – The Smiths
Rihanna’s 2006 hit SOS was obviously based on a sample from Soft Cell’s Tainted Love. What’s long been less clear, is that the song’s second verse entirely exists of song titles from other ‘80s hits by a-ha, Cutting Crew, Tears For Fears, Kim Wilde/Diana Ross & The Supremes and Michael Jackson. Check this:
Take on me (uh-huh), you know inside you feel it right /
Take me on, I could just die up in your arms tonight /
I melt with you, you got me head over heels (over heels) /
Boy, you keep me hanging on, the way you make me feel.
Cynthia Nabozny (the full name of singer and composer Cyn) pulls the same trick on her new single. In fact, the title of the tune already gives it away. The song references several songs by The Smiths, like Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now, This Charming Man, The Queen Is Dead and There’s A Light That Never Goes Out. The Smiths being her ex’s favourites, the song depicts how a bad experience can ruin your relationship with a band. Just ask Morrissey and Johnny Marr…
Musically, the track has ‘80s written all over it as well. Not only The Smiths, but Pretenders and even The Cure shine through as well, so what’s not to like? Still, the song sounds very contemporary overall. It’s one of three new tracks on the ‘Extended Edition’ of Cyn’s album Valley Girl, which was released on Katy Perry’s label UnSub Records.
The Smiths by Cyn is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. It will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.
