Wildcard (week 17):
renforshort – Feeling Good
Home to artists like The Beaches, Tegan & Sara, Altered By Mom and Päter, Canada is one of my favourite continents, music-wise. ren (the musical alter ego of Lauren Isenberg) is from Canada as well. The Toronto-born singer-songwriter debuted with her single Waves in 2019. A year later, she changed her stage name to renforshort. Since then, she collaborated with numerous other artists, beside releasing her own music. Currently, her catalogue holds one full album and four EPs.
EP #5, A Girl’s Experience, is slated for release on 6 June. Three tracks have already been released so far. On My Way! and Pretend To Like Me are now followed by Feeling Good. The bold new single overflows with energy and attitude. Combining renforshort’s signature alt-pop flavours with a 90s pop throwback and a touch of psychedelic-tinged production, it pushes her evolving sound to new heights. The song gradually intensifies, culminating in a cathartic release, with renforshort delivering punchy, vibrant vocals. A contender for the feel-good song of the year!
Just ahead of her 23rd birthday, Feeling Good by renforshort is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. It will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Wildcard (week 16):
Anouk – Set This Thing On Fire
Dutch singer Anouk may be best-known as a rock chick, but that image is partly caused by her attitude. She wears her heart on her sleeve and says things the way they are (or how she sees them, anyway). Musically, she’s more of a chameleon, though. She doesn’t like to do the same thing twice.
That said, her 15th studio album Set This Thing On Fire is a rock set, like in her early days. However, Thomas Azier’s production skills provide it with a fresh, contemporary sound. Anouk made it with a clear purpose: she needed a new bunch of powerful songs to spice up her forthcoming festival shows. Mission accomplished, I’d say; the record contains nine up-tempo guitar tunes and one ballad.
The title track falls in the first category. It’s a song about people in large, influential networks who abuse their power. Or in fact, it’s about the ones who dare to stand up against those people, even when they run the risk of putting their careers on the line.
Set This Thing On Fire by Anouk is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. It will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Wildcard (week 15):
The Beaches – Last Girls At The Party
The Beaches are a quartet of Canadian power women. Named after the neighbourhood they grew up in, the band comprises lead vocalist/bassist Jordan Miller, guitarist Kylie Miller, keyboardist/guitarist Leandra Earl, and drummer Eliza Enman-McDaniel. Best-known for their hit Blame Brett, Billboard Canada’s ‘Breakthrough Artist of the Year 2023’ have featured here regularly. And by the sound of it, they aren’t likely to leave these columns any time soon.
The alt-rock queens just announced their highly anticipated third studio album, No Hard Feelings. It will be released on 29 August 29, but fans don’t have to wait that long to get a taste. Following Takes One To Know One and Jocelyn, the triumphant third single off the long-player is out now.
Last Girls At The Party is an exuberant, hedonistic anthem about reveling all night. “We’re four crazy girls who like to have fun together, and are literally always the last to leave”, frontperson Jordan Miller says about the tune. The infectious new single is classic The Beaches; bold, fun, catchy and undeniably anthemic. A high energy sing-along song that’s bound to bring out the sun.
Last Girls At The Party by The Beaches is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. It will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.
