Jealous Of The Birds – Something Holy
18 September, Belfast-based Naomi Hamilton, a.k.a. Jealous Of The Birds, releases her second album Peninsula. In addition to recent single Young Neanderthal, she now serves up a second track ahead of the long-player.
Something Holy is a timeless tune with the freshness of a sea breeze. Itâs got acoustic guitars, a tambourine, soft drums, a walking bassline and a gentle guitar melody.
Hamilton says of the new track: âSomething Holy was written on a trip I took to Lisbon, Portugal after a burnout. My perception of things had become pretty stale, so the song articulates grappling with oneâs artistic practice and trying to see the innate sanctity of simple images in all their concreteness. The particularity of things and the sheer marvel that they even exist is very grounding to me. Being present and paying attention to all of that brought me back around.”
Peninsula was produced by Marta Salogni (Björk, M.I.A.) and David Wrench (Jaime xx, David Byrne). The songs mark Jealous Of The Birdsâ continuing progression from bedroom recordings to more expansive and inventive use of the studio.

Jealous Of The Birds – Ode To Fire
Jealous Of The Birds are back with a single that will slowly ensconce itself in your brain. Ode To Fire was produced by Marta Salogni (Björk, M.I.A.). The song is built around a soothing guitar melody, which appears to hint Indian influences. However, the track was conceived in Portugal.
Irish singer-songwriter Naomie Hamilton is the woman behind Jealous Of The Birds. She explains: “Ode To Fire was written during a solo trip I took to Lisbon, Portugal in the spring of last year. I’d burnt myself out and travelled there with the hope of clearing my head and recharging creatively. In the afternoons I explored the city by foot and then spent the evenings working on songs in a tiny apartment. While I was there I lived a pretty monastic existence, especially considering that I knew no one and couldn’t speak the language. The song expresses that despite how idyllic experiencing a new place and culture is, it can be difficult to fully relish in these things when one is geographically separated from one’s partner. Joy is often diluted when it’s not shared.”

Jealous Of The Birds – Blue Eyes
Judging by the singles off it, Jealous Of The Birds forthcoming EP will be great. Wisdom Teeth (available on 1 February) was preceded by the lovely single Marrow, and now, Blue Eyes is released as the second teaser.
Blue Eyes is a more full-on pop rock song, with funky bass and chunky guitars. On top of this groovy backdrop, Naomi Hamilton a.k.a. Jealous Of The Birds sings of the incomparable rush of a new sexual attraction with the owner of the titular ‘Blue Eyes’. The chorus, especially, is very strong, with itâs repeated âYeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeahâ.
The singer explains: “There’s something powerful to me about femininity being self-reflexive as opposed to being expressed through the male gaze. I tried to translate that grit and sass by going for heavier instrumentation, funky bass lines and pop vocal melodies. Honestly, I just want to make the listener dance and feel good. Out of all the songs on the Wisdom Teeth EP, this was perhaps the most musically direct and enjoyable to record.”

Jealous Of The Birds – Marrow
Northern Ireland’s Naomi Hamilton, a.k.a. Jealous Of The Birds, appears to have been experiencing a period of inspiration and productivity in recent times, leading up to the release of her EP The Moths Of What I Want Will Eat Me In My Sleep, only last summer, now followed by the announcement of her forthcoming EP Wisdom Teeth, on 1 February 2019.
Marrow, built on a soothing guitar melody that accompanies Hamilton’s angelic vocals, is the first single off her new EP. A sweeping rock song that shows off her multi-dimensional talents.
Hamilton explains: “Marrow is my attempt to articulate what itâs like to be a human being navigating oneâs inner and outer worlds. After I graduated university a year ago, I became much more resolute about chasing a life in music, art and travelling. To me, this song captures that sense of striving for authenticity in all its colours and forms, whether thatâs in love, in oneâs career, or in oneâs spirituality. I think it also taps into this idea of the individual versus the collective, and the ways we assimilate whatâs happening for us on a personal level with all the chaos and intensity of the world at large.”

Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming â often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which Iâll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesnât mean the blog is closing down. Itâll continue to be the home of my âbest ofâ collection (Wernerâs Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, Iâll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. Youâll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If youâre an artist, donât be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprisedâŠ

Your favourites (2020)
My container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2020 doesnât only include all of the 994 songs I recommended last year. It also holds the 100 best tracks in my opinion, the Carte Blanche Music Top 2020, which I published yesterday. But thatâs only my selection. Isnât it more interesting to see which of my recommendations you read the most? In other words: what were your favourites in 2020?
I think itâs funny to see the Carte Blanche Music blog has a strong archive function. Thatâs apparent from the number of older posts you still like to visit (and which you find via search engines). A good example is the best read article this year: ToukassĂ© by Shanguy. It stems from 2019, just like 24 other entries in the list below. Even more impressing is La Roi De Murphy, Belgian songstress AngĂšleâs debut single from 2017 (also her break-through), which is still among the 20 most read blogs in 2020.
Thank you for being such loyal visitors of Carte Blanche Music. Don’t miss a single recommendation by following me on Twitter, Facebook or, new for 2021, Instagram! Iâll do my best to make sure those accounts will soon be your favourites too, just like the tracks below:
