The Ramona Flowers feat. Nile Rodgers – Up All Night
Since the last time I suggested there’s something in the water in Bristol, the number of great artists from the city had only grown. The Ramona Flowers aren’t a new band though. They released their debut EP Dismantle in 2012. But I believe their finest moment has yet to come, and they just released the track that might accomplish that.
Up All Night is the band’s first release in three years’ time. It’s an anthemic, up-tempo song with stadium-size horn elements, beautiful strings and of course Nile Rodgers‘ signature funky guitar licks.
“Essentially, it’s a song about my love of a good party and the fact I seem to somehow always be the last one to want to leave. Have there been occasions where I should have gone home for an early night? Absolutely! But that’s just not in my make up and life’s too short to worry about tomorrow too much…”, comments the band’s front man Steve Bird.
Nile Rodgers says about the collaboration: “It’s possible that I’ve made more music during the pandemic than at any other time in my life and almost all of it remotely. In the early dark days of this crisis this song made me feel good and put a smile on my face so when the band asked me to play and produce on it, it was a delight to say yes.”

Wildcard (week 38):
ONR (feat. Nile Rodgers) – Kill TV
![]()
Robert Shields was born in Scotland, where he started making music in his early teens. He learned to play the piano and made himself conversant with song-writing. Soon, it became clear he’s a talented singer-songwriter, multi instrumentalist, and producer. But even though he was offered record deals by multiple labels, he decided to perfect his skills first. In the process, he wrote loads of songs and toured with the likes of Bastille.
As an artist, Shields calls himself ONR, and in my ears, Kill TV is his master piece so far. The track, which he describes as ‘anarchic’ and ‘incredibly aggressive’, touches on the subject of media and social media and just how toxic it can be to us. It features Nile Rodgers‘ unmistakable guitar licks, Bastille’s Chris Wood on drums and was mixed by acclaimed producer Mark ‘Spike’ Stent (Madonna, Coldplay, Florence & The Machine, Muse, and many more).
Kill TV came to be when ONR was at a songwriting camp at Abbey Road Studios. That’s where he met Nile Rodgers. When Corona ruined ONR’s plans to release an EP and go on tour, he wrote this track in his home studio in Scotland. He sent it to Rodgers, who loved it so much that he immediately laid down the guitar tracks.
In a world of justice, Kill TV would be ripping apart radios (and television sets) all over the globe. In the world we currently live in, ONR has to settle with my choice to make it this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. For now, that is. For I’m convinced in the end justice will prevail.

Wildcard (week 3):
Nile Marr – Only Time Can Break Your Heart
Nile Marr has the talent to write catchy pop songs and infectious (guitar) melodies running through his veins. You won’t be surprised to learn he’s the son of Smiths guitarist and successful solo artist Johnny Marr. His first name is a homage to one of his father’s musical heroes, Chic’s Nile Rodgers. But when asked for his influences, he’ll mention Broken Social Scene, Fugazi and Elliott Smith.
Following a 6-year stint as a founding member of indie trio Man Made, Marr Jr. released his solo debut album Are You Happy Now? in 2020. The now 29-year-old artist’s new single, released via Bandcamp and on vinyl, is brand-new. It features How We Drift on one ‘A-side’, and Only Time Can Break Your Heart on the other. Marr recorded both tracks in a studio he built during the COVID-19-induced lockdown. The latter song is by far my favourite.
Jangly and upbeat, Only Time Can Break Your Heart will go down well with fans of bands like The Byrds, R.E.M., The La’s and Big Star. These were bands that made him want to write songs when he first heard them as a kid. “It doesn’t have to be shouty, it doesn’t have to be loud”, he explains. “It’s singing because I like it, it’s melody because I like melody. It’s liberating.”
Only Time Can Break Your Heart by Nile Marr is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, so it’ll feature prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Carte Blanche Music Top 2021
Ahead of your favourites among this year’s Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which I’ll publish next week, these are my personal choices from the songs that came out in 2021. This list holds only 100 tracks, but you can find all of my 998 recommendations in my container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2021.
As always, I love to share some statistics about the Carte Blanche Music Top 2021. If there’s one – sad – common denominator to be found in this list, it’s that most of these songs have been criminally overlooked by radio stations outside the artist’s home countries. Radio playlists are growing more and more uniform, denying the diversity of the music available. Obviously, with over 60.000 new tracks added to Spotify every day the supply is kind of excessive, but more adventurous choices would be very welcome. Knowing this won’t happen, the best you can do is follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist, then I’ll keep you updated 😉. This is what you can expect, based on this year’s Top 2021:
- Mostly (young and) upcoming artists, many of whom release their music independently
- No less than 72% of the Top 2021 features female vocalists, up from 70% in our Top 2020 and 60% in the Top 2019
- We love pure pop songs, but with 40% guitar-based tracks, we’re more rock ‘n’ roll than average. According to Spotify Wrapped, our favourite genres last year were indie pop, modern alternative rock and dance pop, and we agree
- You can expect the best new tunes from all over the world, but even we have our preferences. We have extra warm feelings for music from countries like Australia, France, Canada and Denmark. Just so you know…
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2021 features 100 tracks, which are presented below in alphabetical order. You can listen to them all via the Spotify player. If you prefer another order, the shuffle button is your friend.

Wildcard (week 37):
Fickle Friends – Love You To Death
After first establishing their reputation entirely independently, Fickle Friends signed to a major label. In 2018, Polydor released their debut album You Are Someone Else, which hit the Top 10. Soon after however, the Brighton band decided to resume the indie route. Over the course of the last 18 months, they’ve released two seasons of the Weird Years EP series.
Fickle Friends are currently recording their sophomore album Are We Gonna Be Alright? It’s scheduled to come out on 14 January 2022. The first track to be released ahead of it is their exciting new single Love You To Death. A tight, funk-fuelled pop-rock song with a Prince/Nile Rodgers energy, filled with killer hooks.
Singer Natti Shiner says about it: “It’s a song about loving someone so much you might actually kill them. I’m pretty amazed by just how much I can feel sometimes, like it’s quite overwhelming a lot of the time. That’s where this song comes from.”
This week, Love You To Death by Fickle Friends is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!

Carte Blanche Music Top 2020
Ahead of your favourites among this year’s Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which I’ll publish tomorrow, these are my personal choices from the songs that came out in 2020. This list holds only 100 tracks, but you can find all of my 994 recommendations in my container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2020.
As always, I love to share some statistics about the Carte Blanche Music Top 2020. These findings are further evidence of the fact that the music radio stations play for you is far from representative of the wealth of great new music out there. Thankfully, there are blogs like Carte Blanche Music that are independent and unbiased, and don’t want to please everybody at the same time. We’re here to surprise you with great new music, no matter what genre or gender, origin or orientation. Just a few statistics:
- Judging from this Top 100 alone (let alone the full container playlist), 2020 was a great year for pure pop music, young artists, ‘80s influences, independent releases, the Australian music scene, queer pop-rock and female vocalists
- A whopping 70% of the tracks in this year’s list feature female lead vocals (and I thought the 60% in the Carte Blanche Music Top 2019 was impressive already)
- Overall, rock ruled. 54% of the tracks in my year-end chart is guitar-based (just over last year’s tally)
- The list clearly shows there are more countries that produce great artists than Great-Britain and the United States alone. This year, more nationalities than ever are represented in my Top 100. You’ll also find artists from Armenia, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland
- As a result, although most lyrics are in English, you’ll also hear songs (partly) sung in French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Swedish
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2020 features 100 tracks, which are presented below in alphabetical order. You can listen to them all via the Spotify player. If you prefer another order, just use the shuffle button 😉.
