Alessia Cara & The Warning – Enter Sandman
Alongside the 30th Anniversary Edition of their self-titled ‘black album’, Metallica released The Metallica Blacklist. This 4-CD set contains covers of black album tracks by artists like Juanes, Weezer, Sam Fender, Royal Blood, Biffy Clyro, J. Balvin, Chase & Status, Volbeat and Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan. Some of these are truly awful, but don’t take my word for it. You could better tempt you ears yourself…
Meanwhile, some of them are really good as well. I was rather charmed by Miley Cyrus, Watt, Elton John, Yo-Yo Ma, Robert Trujilo & Chad Smith’s version of Nothing Else Matters, for instance. The cover album’s opener is equally strong. The first track you’ll hear when you put it on, is Enter Sandman by Alessia Cara & The Warning. No way you’ll fall asleep to this one. Although the epic guitar hook is unmistakable, the ladies give the well-known hit their own spin. Alessia Cara fans especially should brace themselves. Throughout, the track is very well sung.
Just in case you didn’t know: The Warning are three sisters from Monterrey, México. Daniela Villarreal plays the guitar and shares the lead vocals with Cara, while drummer Paulina Villarreal and bass player Alejandra Villarreal both provide backing vocals as well. All four of the artists will donate their portion to Save The Children. A job well done in more ways than one.

Your ‘All-Time’ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming – often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which I’ll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesn’t mean the blog is closing down. It’ll continue to be the home of my ‘best of’ collection (Werner’s Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, I’ll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your ‘All-Time’ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. You’ll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If you’re an artist, don’t be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprised…
Enjoy and thanks for joining the ride so far. Follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist (click ‘♥’ in Spotify) for many more recommendations to come!

Your Favourites (2021)
My container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2021 doesn’t only include all of the 998 songs I recommended last year. It also holds the 100 best tracks in my opinion, the Carte Blanche Music Top 2021, which I published last week. But that’s only my selection. Isn’t it more interesting to see which of my recommendations you read the most? In other words: which of them were Your Favourites in 2021?
Apparently, the Carte Blanche Music blog has a strong archive function. A quarter of the Top 100 below consists of blog posts from earlier years, which you find via search engines. ‘Google is your friend’, as they say… Also, I think it’s wonderful to see young and upcoming artists like Angèle, Aili x Transistorcake, Mina Okabe, Eyjaa and Videoclub having more than one track amongst your favourites. These are acts to keep an extra keen eye on!
Thank you for being such loyal visitors of Carte Blanche Music. Follow me on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram and you won’t miss a single recommendation. You’ll find all of these brand-new songs and more in my daily updated Spotify playlist.
And now, enjoy last year’s greatest chart of all: Your Favourites 2021!

Alec Benjamin – Mind Is A Prison
Alec Benjamin is a 25-year-old storyteller from Arizona. He broke through last year after re-recording his song Let Me Down Slowly with Alessia Cara. Before he got his own stage, he busked on the street and played in parking lots for fans as they waited in line to see other artists like Troye Sivan and Shawn Mendes.
Like no other, Benjamin knows how to turn everyday heartbreak into compelling pop songs. His autobiographical new single Mind Is A Prison is just another example. It’s about trying to escape his inner thoughts, without any luck. He explains: “This song is just about how I overthink everything. Especially all this new music and all these new decisions that I’ve had to make. (…) The song is about feeling like you’re trapped inside your own mind. You can be your own worst enemy.”

Dombresky – Soul Sacrifice
Dombresky is a French producer who was discovered in 2015 by A-Trak. Since then, he proved himself to be one of the most exciting producers on the scene. In addition to his originals, he remixed the likes of A-Trak, A$AP Rocky, and Alessia Cara.
Soul Sacrifice is Dombresky’s highly infectious new single. But am I getting old, or are my fellow music bloggers ignorant or plain lazy? None of the other reviews I read, mention the fact that Soul Sacrifice is based on De La Soul’s 1991 hit Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey), which in itself is a cover of Curiosity Killed The Cat’s Name And Number from two years earlier. Both highly recommended as well!

The Rubens (feat. Sarah) – Never Ever
Down under, The Rubens scored platinum and gold with their first albums The Rubens and Hoops, respectively. Their third one, Lo La Ru, is announced for 29 June.
As a first taster, the band released the single Never Ever, featuring singer-songwriter Sarah Aarons. She already wrote for the likes of Dua Lipa, Jessie Ware and Alessia Cara, and now adds The Rubens to that list. On Never Ever, Sarah’s voice sounds totally different from singer Sam Margin’s, but still, they go together very well.
Although it was the first time for the band to collaborate with another artist, it turned out a successful experiment. Eventually, the song was finished after a session of only five hours.
