Wildcard (week 4):
Altered By Mom – Dive In[flag country="ca"]
I consider myself a huge Altered By Mom fan. 2020 was an extraordinarily prolific year for the Canadian duo; they released one song every week, resulting in a massive, truly great album, aptly titled 52 Songs. Two hours and 30 minutes very well spent.
Unsurprisingly, Gina Kennedy and Devon Lougheed eased down after fulfilling that project. They participated in a Christmas single at the end of 2021 and were completely off the musical radar last year. Now, thankfully, they’re back! Diving head first into the new year, Altered By Mom just released a beautiful new single.
Dive In is a classic power pop song, with a hooky psychedelic sound which the duo describe as ‘St. Vincent and Lenny Kravitz racing Lamborghinis’. Lyrically, it’s a call to action to chase after the things that scare you the most. A relatable tune that clocks in just under the 3 minute mark.
Altered By Mom’s comeback single Dive In is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means it’ll be featured prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Altered By Mom – You Can Do What You Want With My Heart, Babe[flag country="ca"]
Even the artists I like best (as in: ever), have their weak moments. And they’re not to blame, for they’re only humans, aren’t they? It’s hardly possible to record only great tunes. That being said, it looks like Altered By Mom are trying to prove the opposite.
Since the beginning of this year, the Canadian duo are releasing one song every week. To be honest, I only recently learned of – and started following – their initiative, and it’s quite impressing. Three out of the four songs they put out in the last 28 days are absolute aces (and the fourth one isn’t bad at all).
You Can Do What You Want With My Heart, Babe is Devon Lougheed and Gina Kennedy’s most recent release (at the time of writing, that is). It’s written with Lawrence Nichols of fellow Toronto band Lowest Of The Low and features a modulation by the book near the end. Wonderful stuff… again!
Judging from the quality of their recent output, with 52 songs to choose from by the end of the year, it must be possible to compile the bestest ‘Best Of’ ever. Perhaps even two.

Altered By Mom – Better On The Page[flag country="ca"]
Setting yourself a task to release a new song every week for a whole year, doesn’t leave much room to dwell on each individual track. Not even when it’s such a great tune as last weeks Carte Blanche Music Wildcard: Altered By Mom’s Walking With The Enemy. But as predicted: the band already moved on.
This week, the Canadian duo share new song Better On The Page. And guess what? It isn’t some kind of filler, but another top track. An up-tempo song with staccato beats. The verses feature alternating vocals of Devon Lougheed and Gina Kennedy, whose voices blend beautifully in the choruses.
A project very much worth following, and you’ll end up with a great (and comprehensive) collection of songs by the end of the year.

Wildcard (week 32):
Altered By Mom – Walking With The Enemy[flag country="ca"]
As you may have noticed, Australia and Canada are currently two of my favourite sources of exciting new music. Altered By Mom are from Toronto.
The project started as an excuse for producer/songwriter Devon Lougheed to play with some of his favourite musicians from all across Canada. But it really took shape with the permanent addition of Gina Kennedy (bass/vocals) and Jamie Williamson (drums). Well, not really permanently actually, for in 2020, Altered By Mom are a duo consisting of Lougheed and Kennedy. In general, they play all instruments themselves.
Long before Corona kicked in, the band set a goal for themselves: they would release a song a week this year. That’s 52 songs. In other words: quite a lot! Still, they manage to maintain a high standard, combining a knack for infectious melodies and classic song-writing with a quirky sense of humour and a tongue-in-cheek post-grunge aesthetic. They describe themselves as ‘like Sloan had a baby with Barenaked Ladies… and then that baby stole your cigarettes’.
Walking With The Enemy is the pair’s latest single. Or, by the time you read this, they’ll probably have released a follow-up already. But Walking With The Enemy is a song worth servicing to radio stations and playlist curators. It’s an above par track which starts with an ‘80s, Neue Deutsche Welle kind of synth, before the drum kicks in. What follows is a tune so catchy, it deserves to be a hit (whatever that may mean these days).
As I like to put my money where my mouth is, Walking With The Enemy by Altered By Mom is this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!

Altered By Mom – Hear That Sound[flag country="ca"]
Altered By Mom started as an excuse for producer/songwriter Devon Lougheed to play with some of his favourite musicians from all across Canada, but really took shape with the permanent addition of Gina Kennedy (bass/vocals) and Jamie Williamson (drums).
Ahead of their new album Trapped In An MP3 (due later this year) the Toronto-based pop-rock band have a new single out. Hear That Sound showcases their knack for classic song-writing with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humour. And the way the male and female vocals are juxtaposed is just lovely. Boy, would this have been a radio hit when radio was still about smart and catchy pop songs!
The band says about the track: “Hear That Sound is about making someone else cry. It’s such a universal yet specific moment – because people cry all the time, but when it happens, nothing feels more deeply personal. In the audio world, we talk about crossfades where one bit of audio blends seamlessly into another, and sometimes relationships end and begin like that too. This song encompasses the sound of artefacts from a previous relationship fading out while a new one begins.”

Wildcard (week 27):
Goodnight Sunrise – This Is Yours (To Make)[flag country="ca"]
At Carte Blanche Music, we’re huge fans of Canadian artists. Well, not all of them, obviously, but there’s a lot (really A LOT) of good music coming from the country. Recent examples include Päter, Augusta, Altered By Mom, Housewife, Lights, Velours, Blonde Diamond, Jessia, Dear Rouge, noelle, Harm & Ease, Madison Olds, Allie X, Elina Filice, Lølø, Chris Corey, Ruby Waters, Goodnight Sunrise… Do you want me to continue? All of these have featured on this blog before.
Today, let’s focus on the latter. Goodnight Sunrise are a Toronto band, led by the dual male-female vocal alchemy of keytarist Vanessa Vakharia and guitarist David Kochberg. Since forming in 2011, they earned a reputation as a great live act through over 400 shows across Europe and North America.
With their new single This Is Yours (To Make) the band comes full circle. One of their first self-written songs, they originally recorded it ten years ago for their debut album Create/Destroy/Create. From the start it was clear it had the potential to become a fan favourite and anthemic concert closer (which it came to be). Since the track kept evolving over the years, Goodnight Sunrise decided to record an explosive new version of it. More powerful and punchy than ever, it’s now likely to grow from a fan favourite into a Canadian classic.
If you happen to be in the country this summer (or are lucky enough to live there), don’t miss the band while they’re on tour!
This Is Yours (To Make) by Goodnight Sunrise is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means it’ll be featured prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.
