Wildcard (week 52):
Camp Kubrick – Goodbye To College
Pepijn Schipper is one of the most prolific and successful Dutch EDM artists. As Don Diablo, he is a DJ, digital artist, label owner, record producer, musician, songwriter and remixer. He is one of the pioneers of the future house genre. But Schipper also uses other stage names for a variety of projects. One of my favourites among them is Camp Kubrick.
Camp Kubrick is a project he launched in September 2020 with singer Denzel Chain (born Denzel Ketting). Their sound is very much inspired by ‘80s pop. In their bio, they namedrop artists like Toto, Lionel Richie and Kraftwerk, and movies like ‘Back To The Future’ and ‘The Never Ending Story’ as sources of inspiration.
Choosing quality over quantity, Camp Kubrick only release a track now and then. Their 2020 debut single Johnny’s Online was followed by three tracks in 2021, one in 2022 and one in 2023. Today saw the release of only Camp Kubrick’s seventh tune, but it’s a killer track once again. Not a far cry from The Weeknd, Goodbye To College is an ‘80s style pop song that effortlessly sounds contemporary forty years later.
With Goodbye To College we say goodbye to 2025. Camp Kubrick’s new single is the last Carte Blanche Music Wildcard of the year. It will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Don Diablo presents Camp Kubrick – Whatchu Do
The artwork proudly states: ‘Don Diablo presents Camp Kubrick’. When a duo includes one of the best-known DJ’s in the world, it only logical his name is mentioned loud and clear. And when you do, you obviously don’t use his real name Pepijn Schipper. Yet, the Don is only one half of the project, the other being singer Denzel Chain (born Denzel Ketting).
Other than Diablo’s trademark future house sound, his new project offers an ‘80s inspired pop sound. Their last single Falling For You for instance, appeared to be based upon Michael Jackson’s The Way You Make Me Feel. And new single Whatchu Do, only their third, sounds very much like The Weeknd. That shouldn’t come as a surprise, for the Canadian superstar fishes in the same musical pond. And not quite unsuccessfully so… (16 Billboard Music Awards nominations, anyone?).
Those are not the influences that are mentioned in Camp Kubrick’s bio, by the way. That document namedrops artists like Toto, Lionel Richie, Kraftwerk, and movies like ‘Back To The Future’ and ‘The Never Ending Story’. And with acts like Camp Kubrick, that’s exactly what the ‘80s are: a never ending story. Something I’m genuinely happy about!

Your ‘All-Time’ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming – often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which I’ll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesn’t mean the blog is closing down. It’ll continue to be the home of my ‘best of’ collection (Werner’s Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, I’ll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your ‘All-Time’ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. You’ll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If you’re an artist, don’t be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprised…
Enjoy and thanks for joining the ride so far. Follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist (click ‘♥’ in Spotify) for many more recommendations to come!
