Cold War Kids – What You Say
Iâm a long-time fan of Cold War Kids. Ever since the release of their debut album Robbers And Cowards, to be precise. Almost exactly 15 years later (on 24 September), the Californian rock band will put out their ninth record: New Age Norms 3. As you can tell from its title, this will be the final episode in a trilogy they started in 2019.
Founding members Nathan Willett and Matt Maust are still with the quintet. Since the mid â10s, theyâre accompanied by Joe Plummer, Matthew Schwartz and David Quon. Originally best-known for their bluesy rock sound, their music has become decidedly âlighterâ in recent years. New single What You Say can even be described as danceable. And still, itâs immediately recognizable as a Cold War Kids-tune, not in the least because of Willettâs unique soulful vocals.
He says of the track: âI think all of us want to reveal âour full selvesâ to someone who truly understands. But when we do we expose ourselves to judgment, to criticism. So we donât wanna give ourselves away too easily. Thatâs why poetry is awesome, itâs not politicizing, it speaks to our deeper, universal stuff. What you say is a big deal, your words have power.â

Cold War Kids (feat. Bishop Briggs) – So Tied Up
Cold War Kids are quick to follow-up their single Love Is Mystical. The second set-up song for their upcoming album L.A. Divine is called So Tied Up. It features Bishop Briggs, a British singer-songwriter currently based in Los Angeles, California. Her real name is Sarah Grace McLaughlin, but she was born to parents from Bishopbriggs, Scotland, which inspired her professional name.
The official video for the single showcases a live acoustic version of the song with a beautiful string arrangement and a more prominent role for Bishop Briggs.
This is what the original studio version sounds like:
Cold War Kids – Love Is Mystical
Cold War Kids make serious music. Seriously good music, as well. Which doesnât mean theyâre not in for a little fun from time to time. Three years ago, for example, they were involved in a project with Belgian beer brewer Stella Artois, where they used beer glasses as instruments. This resulted in the track A Million Eyes.
Just over ten years after their debut album Robbers And Cowards, Cold War Kids finished their sixth long player. L.A. Divine will be released on 7 April, but the first single is already here. Love Is Mystical is a banger, with a piano that bears enough resemblance with the intro of Fat Boy Slimâs Praise You to sound familiar, without being very similar at all. Catchy tune!

Carte Blanche Music Top 2021
Ahead of your favourites among this yearâs Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which Iâll publish next week, these are my personal choices from the songs that came out in 2021. This list holds only 100 tracks, but you can find all of my 998 recommendations in my container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2021.
As always, I love to share some statistics about the Carte Blanche Music Top 2021. If thereâs one â sad â common denominator to be found in this list, itâs that most of these songs have been criminally overlooked by radio stations outside the artistâs home countries. Radio playlists are growing more and more uniform, denying the diversity of the music available. Obviously, with over 60.000 new tracks added to Spotify every day the supply is kind of excessive, but more adventurous choices would be very welcome. Knowing this wonât happen, the best you can do is follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist, then Iâll keep you updated đ. This is what you can expect, based on this yearâs Top 2021:
- Mostly (young and) upcoming artists, many of whom release their music independently
- No less than 72% of the Top 2021 features female vocalists, up from 70% in our Top 2020 and 60% in the Top 2019
- We love pure pop songs, but with 40% guitar-based tracks, weâre more rock ânâ roll than average. According to Spotify Wrapped, our favourite genres last year were indie pop, modern alternative rock and dance pop, and we agree
- You can expect the best new tunes from all over the world, but even we have our preferences. We have extra warm feelings for music from countries like Australia, France, Canada and Denmark. Just so you knowâŠ

Middle Kids – R U 4 Me?
18 months have passed since Australian guitar-pop trio Middle Kids released new music. Now, the band around lead singer and songwriter Hannah Joy is back with R U 4 Me? Itâs faster and more furious than before, but as catchy as ever. As always, it combines infectious melodies with raucous, arena-worthy indie rock. But this time, thereâs more of an edge to it, probably courtesy of producer Lars Stalfors (St Vincent, Cold War Kids, Soccer Mommy).
Explaining the inspiration for the song, Joy says: âI was at university once and there were all these signs on the walls saying âBE NICE ITâS NOT THAT HARD.â The tone of the message itself actually wasnât very nice or kind⊠We are always looking around at other people thinking âare you on my team?â. I think this just results in us all feeling lonely.â
Middle Kidsâ new single comes with a moving music video, focusing on a young boy who struggles to fit in. It tells a story of youth, peer pressure, social isolation and the joy of finding a place to belong.
