Wildcard (week 5):
Confidence Man – Feels Like A Different Thing
I’ve mentioned it before, but I’ve got the impression the ‘80s influences in today’s pop music are slowly shifting towards the early ‘90s. Take Confidence Man’s brilliant new single for instance. It’s called Feels Like A Different Thing, but it sounds wonderfully familiar. It made me think of Right Said Fred’s I’m Too Sexy and Going Back To My Roots by FPI Project. House piano galore, and that gospel vibe is an absolute bliss. What a banger!
The Australian duo say about their new single: “Feels Like A Different Thing isn’t here to mess around. Two lyrics, one riff, no fuss. It’ll get your blood pumping. It’ll make your ears bleed (in a good way). It’ll steal your car and burn down your house and you’ll still say thanks.”
Following last year’s Holiday, Feels Like A Different Thing is the second track to be released ahead of the band’s sophomore album Tilt. It’s due out on 1 April, a date that’s marked in our agenda in flickering red neon lights. For starters, the new single is this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, so it’ll feature at the top of the blog for a full seven days.

Confidence Man – Try Your Luck
Confidence Man had a jam-packed summer, appearing at European festivals like Pukkelpop (Belgium), Lowlands (the Netherlands), Rock En Seine (France), and Snowtunes and Listen Out (both Great Britain). I myself saw them at Lowlands, where they were one of the stand-out acts to me. The Australian foursome, featuring a male and female singer and a mysterious DJ and drummer, threw a groovy, funky and incredibly danceable party that blew all the attendants away.
Try Your Luck is their latest single. The band says about it: ”If Confidence Man was a country, Try Your Luck would be the national anthem. So hats off, hands on hearts and asses on the dancefloor.”

Confidence Man – Bubblegum
Since launching in 1990, Heavenly Recordings has proven to be a tastemaker record label, discovering artists like Manic Street Preachers, Saint Etienne and Doves. More recently, Heavenly gave us Temples, proving they still have a good ear for great music.
One of the latest signings on the label is Australian four-piece Confidence Man, who just came out with their official debut single Bubblegum. As the title suggests it’s pure pop music, but full of groove. Talking of which… it instantly brings back memories of Deee-Lite’s Groove Is In The Heart. We’re going to dance, and have some fun…

Kuzko – Penelope
Kuzko are Danique van der Vlugt and Sam Ouwehand, two artists who do everything themselves. They may be Rotterdam-based, but their music has international potential. Their catchy synth-pop will go down well with fans of acts like Confidence Man, Sofi Tukker and Purple Disco Machine. Meanwhile, their lyrics are witty, and deal with everything from consumerism and high school dramas to cliché love adventures.
As they recently proved with their show at the ESNS 2022 festival, Kuzko are a fun live act. But don’t be mistaken, they’re skilled musicians as well, and Van der Vlugt is a really good singer. During the set they played tracks off their first EP Teardrops On The Dancefloor. But they also premiered two brand-new songs: Rich And Famous and Penelope.
The latter is the duo’s new single. In the best Kuzko tradition it’s a colourful tune with plenty ‘80s influences and another one of their contagious vocal hooks. Sure to put a smile on your face! Penelope is the first track to be released ahead of their sophomore EP that’s scheduled to appear this spring.
