Declan McKenna – Rapture
Enthusiasm for British singer-songwriter Declan McKenna has been brewing for years. And he’s only 21. His quick rise to stardom started in 2015, when he won Glastonbury Festival’s Emerging Talent Competition. At that point, he had only just released his debut single Brazil, a protest song criticizing FIFA and the 2014 World Cup.
Last September, his second album Zeros came out. It’s clearly influenced by The Beatles, David Bowie and other musical legends from decades before he was even born. Zeros is an extremely strong album, especially for someone his age, and the track Rapture immediately stood out. Now, it’s his new single. A great slice of glammed-up indie-pop, with a chorus that’ll refuse to get out of your head.
McKenna explains: “Rapture – though it seems to touch on the current state of the world – was born early last year, and reflects some of my thoughts on the end of the world and the threats that humanity will face in the future, and on common fears for the future.”

Beaux – My Love
Dutch indie pop band Beaux was formed at pop institute the Herman Brood Academie. They combine synth sounds with catchy guitars and vocals. After numerous festival gigs, and support shows for Declan McKenna and George Ezra, they just finished their own successful club tour.
My Love is the band’s new single. A fresh and accessible pop song that refuses to leave your brain (even though they sing ‘I’ll make you forget it all’).

European Border Breakers Chart 10 November 2017
After two #4 singles (Dye My Hair and Chasing Highs), Finnish rising superstar Alma (pictured) scores her first Top 3 hit in the European Border Breakers Charts with Phases (feat. French Montana). It must have been long ago a Finnish artist was as commercially successful outside her home country as this rapper.
Elsewhere in the Top 100 ten emerging European artists are entering the chart, eventually hoping to optain the same amount of success as Alma: Vargas & Lagola – Rolling Stone (#44), Bishop Briggs – Dream (#47), Lewis Capaldi – Mercy (#49), Raye feat. Mr Eazi – Decline (#65), Dermot Kennedy – Moments Passed (#72), Alien Stadium – This One’s For The Humans (#77), Goat Girl – Cracker Drool (#80), Royaume – If We (#97), The Orielles – Let Your Dogtooth Grow (#98) and Declan McKenna – Why Do You Feel So Down (#100).

European Border Breakers Chart 28 July 2017
Among the 15 (re)entries in this week’s European Border Breakers Chart, there are six first-timers. Mermaid by Skott at #96 is my favourite, obviously, I just wrote about it earlier today. A song that’s definitely destined for more. Van Echelpoel, best known for the amazing #14 peak of Ziet Em Duun, sung in a Flemish dialect, are back as well. This time with their fun take on Sinds 1 Dag Of 2 (32 Jaar) by Doe Maar, one of the most popular bands in the Netherlands in the 80’s. This new version, dubbed Sinds Nen Dag Of 2 (38 Jaar), is in at #68. And the talented Declan McKenna (pictured) follows his EBBCharts hits Brazil, Isombard and The Kids Don’t Wanna Come Home with Humongous, at #90. Maybe the best of them all yet. Each of his singles has so far reached a higher position than the previous one, so the prospects are sunny.
