Wildcard (week 29): Ella Eyre – Space
Nobody knows why Ella Eyre’s 14-year career hasn’t resulted in super stardom yet. She’s had hits, solo and alongside artists like Sigala, Ty Dolla Sign, Banx & Ranx and Bastille, but her worldwide breakthrough has yet to come. However, after years of struggling in creative straightjackets, the prospects now look promising.
After her 2015 debut album, her sophomore record was 10 years in the making. During this time, she parted ways with her label and her partner. In doing so, she took back control of her career and her life. That freedom is audible on her second album Everything, In Time, which is due to come out on 21 November. Ahead of the long-player, one of the UK’s best vocalists releases her fiery new single Space.
The London-born singer and songwriter says about the track: “Space is about reaching your limits and drawing a line with humorous, but deadly-serious intentions. I had so much fun when I wrote this song because I was so done with an unwanted situation that it had actually become amusing. I wanted to create as much distance as possible for myself to heal, and even outer space didn’t seem far away enough. Sometimes you can only laugh about something hard – or write a savage song about it.”
A fierce and frank anthem about setting boundaries, Space is a powerful track. It showcases a raw and unfiltered side of Eyre, laden with a bold soul-R&B groove.
After Comeback (2014), Together (2015) and Just Got Paid (2018), Ella Eyre holds the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard once again. She will occupy a prominent Space at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Wildcard (week 37):
Sigala feat. Ella Eyre, Meghan Trainor & French Montana – Just Got Paid
![]()
British DJ, record producer and remixer Bruce Fielder, known professionally as Sigala, has been scoring hits since he first entered the scene in 2015 with his Jackson 5-sampling debut single Easy Love. Since then, he scored 10 huge international hits, that often featured powerhouse vocals by artists like John Newman, Craig David, Hailee Steinfeld or Paloma Faith.
Ella Eyre, who sang on Sigala’s hit Came Here For Love, returns on his new staple. And she’s not alone, Meghan Trainor and French Montana accompany her. Just Got Paid is a funky slice of dance pop, with strings that remind me of Boney M’s 1976 hit Daddy Cool.
Sigala’s long overdue debut album Brighter Days will be out on 21 September, and if it features all of his 12 hits to date, it might as well have been called ‘Greatest Hits’.
His new single (not a cover of Johnny Kemp’s same-titled 1988 smash) is this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. Check them all in the Wildcards 2018 playlist.

Veronica Fusaro – Beach
I already knew Veronica Fusaro’s music, but the first time I saw her live was last January. She played a showcase at ESNS and to me, it was one of the highlights of the festival. After the show, I bought her Sunkissed-EP and got a chance to talk to her. She told me she was working on new material with producer Paul O’Duffy and was surprised I knew who he is.
(In the ‘80s and ‘90s of the last century, Paul Staveley O’Duffy produced many of my favourite sophisticated pop artists. Best-known for his work with Swing Out Sister, he also put his stamp on music by the likes of Hipsway, Curiosity Killed The Cat, Was (Not Was), Danny Wilson and Lisa Stansfield. More recently, he worked with Amy Winehouse, Låpsley and Ella Eyre).
I promised Veronica to keep the information to myself, but now the first fruit of their collaboration is out. Beach is the Swiss singer’s new single. Decorated with handclaps and a beautiful string arrangement, it sounds as sunny and fresh as the title promises. Pop doesn’t get any more sophisticated in 2020.
Asked about the creative process to and behind the song, Veronica tells online magazine God Is In The TV: “The song is about (…) that feeling you have when you want something but you can’t have it. But instead of facing the problem of why you can’t have that thing in the first place you distract yourself with other fun things and cool stuff (or people). Only problem is that all of these fun things have an ‘expiration date’ so you never end up getting what you actually want.”

Carte Blanche Music Top 2018
Ahead of your favourites among this year’s Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which I publish on New Year’s Day, I round off 2018 with my personal choice.
The last year, I introduced you to 1104 great new songs via my container playlist Carte Blanche Music; over 65 hours of music. Exactly 500 of those translated into a written endorsement through this blog. In other words: only one out of each 11 suggestions (and one fifth of all of my posts) made it onto the Carte Blanche Music Top 2018.
I’m very proud of this year-end list, as it differs largely from the majority of charts you’ll find. Just a few statistics:
- 58% of the tracks feature female lead vocals (up from an already impressive 43% in the Carte Blanche Music Top 2017)
- 43% of the tracks are guitar-based (rock is dead? Think again!)
- Apart from British and American acts, my list contains artists from Australia, Norway, the Netherlands, Canada, Spain, France, Belgium, Ireland, Estonia, Germany, Sweden, Hungary and South Korea
- By consequence, you’ll not only hear lyrics in English, but also in French, Hungarian, Spanish, Portuguese and Korean
- Needless to say, my year-end list contains no proper hits whatsoever 😉
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2018 features 100 tracks by 100 different artists. As making that choice was hard enough, the songs are sorted alphabetically. Just use the shuffle button if you prefer another order 😉.
I hope you enjoy listening to the list via the Spotify player. Meanwhile, you can read my original recommendations through the links below.
Werner’s Weekly (week 39)
Christine & The Queens, Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians, Imagine Dragons, India.Arie, Johnny Marr, Primal Scream, Public Service Broadcasting, Rita Ora and White Lies are all wonderful artists with great new singles. All of these, and many more, have been freshly added to my constantly updated Spotify-playlist Carte Blanche Music, which contains the best new music of this year, so far. The past week, this list grew with 40 titles and now holds almost 850 tracks, good for over 50 hours of excellent music.
If that’s too much for now (no offence), I can recommend Werner’s Weekly, your compass to the music that matters. This ‘best of the best’ playlist features only 6 songs that don’t take more than 23 minutes of your time. You can listen to them via the Werner’s Weekly player in the sidebar. While you’re at it, you can read my original recommendations by clicking the links below. Enjoy!

- Sigala feat. Ella Eyre, Meghan Trainor & French Montana – Just Got Paid (Wildcard last week)

Werner’s Weekly (week 38)
Out of the many, many new songs that were released last week, I added only the 29 very best to my 2018 container playlist Carte Blanche Music. Among them well-known artists like Richard Ashcroft, Ben Folds, Hooverphonic, Lenny Kravitz, Amy Macdonald, Novastar and The Smashing Pumpkins, but also a lot of emerging acts and other artists that haven’t yet been embraced by the media and/or the public yet. It’s those acts that this blog focuses on, but I don’t shy away from recommending great new songs by established artists.
Today’s edition of Werner’s Weekly offers the latest two Carte Blanche Music Wildcards plus a fine collection out of all of the categories I mentioned, presented in alphabetical order. This makes it your compass to the music that matters, as always…
- Sigala feat. Ella Eyre, Meghan Trainor & French Montana – Just Got Paid (Wildcard this week)
- Bernhoft & The Fashion Bruises – Humanoid (Wildcard last week)
- Alice Merton – Why So Serious
- Confidence Man – Try Your Luck
- Corine – Maquillage
- Florence & The Machine – Patricia
- Hozier (feat. Mavis Staples) – Nina Cried Power
The links above point you to more information about the songs, all of which you can listen to via the Werner’s Weekly player in the sidebar.

Joseph J. Jones – Crawl
The impact of artists like Hozier and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man is incredible. Both of them being only at the beginning of their (commercial) careers, they already amassed a huge following. Of fans, but also of other artists who fish in the same musical pond.
Joseph J. Jones, whose grandfather was a jazz guitarist with the BBC, brings a fine mix of folk, blues and soul to the table, with intimate lyrics, sung with an incredible voice. Last year, he collaborated with co-writer/producer Richard Frenneaux, who worked with artists like Ella Eyre and Parson James before.
Jones’s promising new single is entitled Crawl.
