Ellie Dixon – Space Out!
Ellie Dixon is a Cambridge-born artist and producer, who names artists like KT Tunstall, Anderson .Paak, Easy Life, Still Woozy and Duckwrth as her influences. She first generated attention with her DIY covers, which often received high praise from the original artists.
These days however, she concentrates on her own songs, which she writes and produces all by herself. She makes all of her music in her bedroom, using everyday objects like clinking glass bottles to microwave door slams and rattling pots. That way, while only in her early twenties, Dixon already created a sound distinctly her own. Funky bass lines and joyous production create great grooves for her witty lyrics and earworm melodies.
Space Out! is her latest quirky single. It combines introspection and fantasy about spending too much time in your head and feeling detached from reality. Just like her songs and the accompanying merchandise, she also made the video herself. Ellie Dixon says this about it: âIt’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever made and I regret nothing.â

Wildcard (week 30):
Belot – VIP
Maya Belot, professionally known as Belot, doesnât only like huge glasses. More importantly, sheâs fond of big tunes. Following her debut EP Electric Blue (2020) and last yearâs EP Harmless Fun, sheâs entered phase 3 of her career.
This year, the London-based talent released Cool Whip and Get This (co-written by Oscar Lang). But third timeâs definitely the charm. VIP is an energetic example of her âawkward popâ sound, and the title might as well prove to be prophetic. Influenced by the likes of Dr. Dre, 50 Cent and Eminem, VIP is an upbeat fun track. Belot explains it’s about âglitz, glamour, success, redemption. It just had to be. The story of becoming the biggest artist one could beâ.
Clocking in under the 2-minute mark, itâs quirky, bright, catchy and groovy. Following support slots with CBM favourites Ellie Dixon, Pip Millet, Caity Baser and others, this is the track thatâll have her stand on her own feet. Sounds like a hit to me!
VIP by Belot is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means itâll be featured prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming â often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which Iâll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesnât mean the blog is closing down. Itâll continue to be the home of my âbest ofâ collection (Wernerâs Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, Iâll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. Youâll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If youâre an artist, donât be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprisedâŠ
Enjoy and thanks for joining the ride so far. Follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist (click ââ„â in Spotify) for many more recommendations to come!

Your favourites (2020)
My container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2020 doesnât only include all of the 994 songs I recommended last year. It also holds the 100 best tracks in my opinion, the Carte Blanche Music Top 2020, which I published yesterday. But thatâs only my selection. Isnât it more interesting to see which of my recommendations you read the most? In other words: what were your favourites in 2020?
I think itâs funny to see the Carte Blanche Music blog has a strong archive function. Thatâs apparent from the number of older posts you still like to visit (and which you find via search engines). A good example is the best read article this year: ToukassĂ© by Shanguy. It stems from 2019, just like 24 other entries in the list below. Even more impressing is La Roi De Murphy, Belgian songstress AngĂšleâs debut single from 2017 (also her break-through), which is still among the 20 most read blogs in 2020.
Thank you for being such loyal visitors of Carte Blanche Music. Don’t miss a single recommendation by following me on Twitter, Facebook or, new for 2021, Instagram! Iâll do my best to make sure those accounts will soon be your favourites too, just like the tracks below:
