Eut – What Gives You The Kicks
Ever since Dutch band Eut released their (second) single Supplies, they attracted the attention of the music industry. It was immediately clear this wasnât your average school band. With playful, energetic songs, packed with catchy hooks, they were one of the most exciting new acts of the Netherlands. This resulted in many bookings for concerts that helped them perfect their skills. Alternative radio stations were quick to jump on board as well. Their first album Fool For The Vibes was everything the critics had hoped for, and more.
Last week, they released their sophomore album Party Time. Itâs all about lust, sex and loneliness; about dancing on an empty dance floor and when you finally fall flat on your face, it might be best to just stay down. The long-player was preceded by five singles, and What Gives You The Kicks is number six.
The track deals with taking a beating and untying yourself from a web of lies that you spun yourself. Another flawless pop song with an edge.

Emily Burns – Iâm So Happy
Remember Pain Is So Close To Pleasure by Queen? UK pop star on the rise Emily Burns has come to the same conclusion. She says about her new single Iâm So Happy: âI clearly remember the day I wrote Iâm So Happy. I went into the studio and was in the best mood ever. I said to the guys about how good I was feeling, and how everything was going right in my life that day (âŠ) We started talking about the fear that comes hand-in-hand with overwhelming happiness, the worry that something is bound to go wrong, even when it might never. Thatâs where the idea of âIâm so happy, itâs a problemâ came from. The idea that sometimes happiness can be painful, because you feel like youâve got so much to lose. Itâs like being on a tightrope and knowing that one wrong move could cause the end of it all.”
Burns was born in Scotland and raised in Warwickshire. She developed an honest, captivating and accessible song-writing style, reaching 50 millions streams on Spotify alone.

Moby feat. Gregory Porter & Amythyst Kiah – Natural Blues [Reprise Version]
New Yorker Moby was one of the most successful dance acts of the 1990s. His âTwin Peaksâ indebted single Go was a huge hit in Europe as well. It was followed by classics such as Move (You Make Me Feel So Good), Feeling So Real, Everytime You Touch Me and his âre-versionâ of the James Bond Theme.
But Moby also turned a hugely successful album act with the release of Play. This long-player was built around samples from the famous field recordings collected by Alan Lomax. Initially Play didnât do too well, due to the singles not being picked up by radio stations and television networks like MTV. But by licensing the songs to films, television shows and commercials, they became hits after all. This in turn resulted in radio and television joining the party after all. No less than 9 tracks off the album were released as singles.
One of those songs was Natural Blues, which originally contained an over 60 year-old sample from American folk singer Vera Hallâs Trouble So Hard. In 2021, Moby releases a new version of the song, this time featuring Gregory Porter and Amythyst Kiah. Their soulful vocals, paired with an orchestra, make for a powerful and moving combination, that gives the song a renewed energy.
This version will be included on Mobyâs upcoming âbest ofâ album Reprise, set for release on 28 May. On this new compilation, the musician revisits and reinterprets his greatest hits with a host of guest singers, accompanied by the Budapest Art Orchestra. Nevertheless, itâs probably one of the most poppy records to ever come out on the legendary classical label Deutsche Grammophon.

Beach Bunny feat. Tegan & Sara – Cloud 9
Beach Bunny is a Chicago-based 4-piece around front woman Lili Trifilio. When they released their debut album Honeymoon, in 2020, the closing track Cloud 9 was one of its highlights. It was rightly released as a single, early that year, but only recently it started to truly make an impact. Thanks to TikTok (where it racked up 1.3 million(!) creations), the track re-emerged and went viral. So far, it spent five consecutive weeks on the Spotify Global Viral 50 chart, earning more than 2 million streams per day and over 78 million total streams. It also crossed from the streaming charts to Billboardâs Hot Alt Songs chart and the Rolling Stone Trending 25 chart. Meanwhile, itâs one of the most added songs at alternative radio.
And now, thereâs a brand-new version of Cloud 9, thatâs likely to spice things up even further. This new take on an already great tune features Canadaâs finest singing twins: Tegan & Sara Quin. The Platinum-selling duo not only lent their voices to the song, but also updated its lyrics to include gender neutral and feminine pronouns.
The sisters say about the collaboration: âWe’re massive fans of Beach Bunny, and when we heard Cloud 9 for the first time fell in love with the brilliant lyrics and addictive melody. We love that Lili was up to let us experiment with changing the pronoun in the chorus to âsheâ. The efforts made to make the song relatable to everyone, isn’t just about inclusivity, we think it’s a great indication of the flexibility and creative spirit of the band at its core!â

Jan-Marten Block – Never Not Try
Just like every country, Germany has got a very popular TV talent show. Itâs called âDeutschland Sucht Den Superstarâ. So far, it hasnât yet produced any winners that managed to achieve an international career, but that me be about to change.
Last week, 25-year-old Jan-Marten Block from the Northern German city of SĂŒderlĂŒgum won the competition. He doesnât only use his voice to sing (impressively), but heâs also a voice-over artist. Apart from that, heâs a multi-instrumentalist, who masters the guitar, piano, drums and bass. In other words: he could be his own one-man band.
Before participating in âDeutschland Sucht Den Superstarâ, he had only performed at fundraisers and family parties. Winning the competition landed him national fame (not to mention a prize of 100.000 euros). Next stop: Europe, and then global stardom? I wouldnât be surprised⊠His debut single Never Not Try is a song with international hit potential.

CamĂ©lia Jordana – Silence
CamĂ©lia Jordana is a French singer and actress, who just turned 28. She first came to the scene when she finished third in TV talent show âNouvelle Starâ in 2009. In her songs, she likes to depict everyday life from a womanâs perspective, including the imperfections that come with it.
Despite playing numerous roles in movies and TV series, sheâs about to release her 4th album in 10 yearsâ time. Following first single Facile, Silence is the second track to be released off it. Elegant, fresh and gently bouncing, it sounds like a softer version of a reggaeton tune. Charmante, as they say in France!

San Mei – Midnight
On the surface, Midnight sounds like a dream-pop single with a kind of 60âs pop feel. But at the same time, itâs San Meiâs most personal song so far. It was nothing less than a therapeutic track for her. She wrote it to cope with the passing of her mother.
The Australian singer-songwriter (real name: Emily Hamilton) explains: âShe was my best friend, and losing her was so very hard. (âŠ)  I wrote the chorus lyrics âgo sweetly, out into the nightâ as a sentiment of letting go, because I decided I didnât want to keep trying to hold on to something I wasnât going to get back. I wanted this song to be a celebration and a sweet send-off, and my way of finally saying goodbye.â
Midnight is the first song San Mei produced herself, helped by Michael McCartney and Holy Holyâs Oscar Dawson.

Wildcard (week 32):
Altered By Mom – Walking With The Enemy
As you may have noticed, Australia and Canada are currently two of my favourite sources of exciting new music. Altered By Mom are from Toronto.
The project started as an excuse for producer/songwriter Devon Lougheed to play with some of his favourite musicians from all across Canada. But it really took shape with the permanent addition of Gina Kennedy (bass/vocals) and Jamie Williamson (drums). Well, not really permanently actually, for in 2020, Altered By Mom are a duo consisting of Lougheed and Kennedy. In general, they play all instruments themselves.
Long before Corona kicked in, the band set a goal for themselves: they would release a song a week this year. That’s 52 songs. In other words: quite a lot! Still, they manage to maintain a high standard, combining a knack for infectious melodies and classic song-writing with a quirky sense of humour and a tongue-in-cheek post-grunge aesthetic. They describe themselves as âlike Sloan had a baby with Barenaked Ladies… and then that baby stole your cigarettesâ.
Walking With The Enemy is the pairâs latest single. Or, by the time you read this, theyâll probably have released a follow-up already. But Walking With The Enemy is a song worth servicing to radio stations and playlist curators. Itâs an above par track which starts with an â80s, Neue Deutsche Welle kind of synth, before the drum kicks in. What follows is a tune so catchy, it deserves to be a hit (whatever that may mean these days).
As I like to put my money where my mouth is, Walking With The Enemy by Altered By Mom is this weekâs Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!
