Wildcard (week 28):
Frank Turner – Sister Rosetta
A stadium act in his home country Great Britain, Frank Turner has yet to reach the general public abroad. But his popularity is steadily growing through constant touring.
His new single Sister Rosetta is a very â90s-sounding guitar pop song (Fountains Of Wayne’s Stacy’s Mom springs to mind, but without the power chords) and an ode to Sister Rosetta Tharpe. A musical and spiritual example for artists like Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, she was nicknamed the âGodmother of rock ân rollâ.
The single precedes Turnerâs new album No Manâs Land, which will count 13 songs: 12 about historically important women and one about his own mother. A release date has not yet been set, but what I can announce, is that Sister Rosetta by Frank Turner is this weekâs Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!
In the Wildcards 2019 playlist you can find all of this yearâs Carte Blanche Music Wildcards so far.

Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming â often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which Iâll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesnât mean the blog is closing down. Itâll continue to be the home of my âbest ofâ collection (Wernerâs Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, Iâll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. Youâll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If youâre an artist, donât be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprisedâŠ
Enjoy and thanks for joining the ride so far. Follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist (click ââ„â in Spotify) for many more recommendations to come!

Wildcard (week 38):
Penfriend – The Only Way Out Is Through
Penfriend is the solo project of Bristolâs Laura Kidd. Sheâs not only an upcoming artist, but also a successful podcast maker. In the first series of her podcast Attention Engineer, she interviewed guests like Bellyâs Tanya Donelly, Frank Turner, Charlotte Hatherley, Public Service Broadcasting, and Tom Robinson. It shot to #10 in the Apple Podcasts top music shows on launch. Series 2 will launch on 7 October.
Following Everything Looks Normal In The Sunshine, The Only Way Out Is Through is only Penfriendâs second release. Sonically, her new single is a nod to the powerpop that ruled the airwaves in the early 1990s. Its grungy guitars give it a rock touch, but itâs sugar-coated by an icy synth melody. Lyrically, Penfriend delivers the message of hope and determination that we all need after a tough six months.
She says: âThe choice to release music in a universally dark time isnât one I take lightly. The Only Way Out Is Through is the most resonant and useful song I have to offer right now, a rescue raft for whoever needs one. Thatâs what this song is for me.â
The Only Way Out Is Through by Penfriend is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!
In the Wildcards 2020 playlist youâll find all of this yearâs Carte Blanche Music Wildcards so far.
Rhea – Under My Skin
Clap your hands and stamp your feet, Rhea is in town. Under My Skin is the second single off their EP Lust For Life Pt. II (which, unsurprisingly, follows Pt. I). They donât exactly leave us guessing for their influences. After its opening handclaps, the track starts with a Marilyn Manson-like riff, while the acoustic-leaning pre-chorus echoes Queen. As a whole, the band erects an impressive wall of glamrock guitars, which combines the best elements of Royal Blood and Muse. Although it comes to a close within three minutes, itâs a track with plenty variation, putting the listener on the wrong track more than once.
Rhea is a Belgian band with international ambition and potential, partly thanks to producer Alex Newport (Bloc Party, Frank Turner). Their EPâs, recorded in studios across Los Angeles, Brighton and Belgium, are preludes to their upcoming debut album.

Carte Blanche Music Top 2019
Ahead of your favourites among this yearâs Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which I publish on New Yearâs Day, I round off 2019 with my personal choices.
The last year, I introduced you to 979 great new songs via my container playlist Carte Blanche Music; almost 57 hours of music. Exactly 500 of those translated into a written endorsement through this blog. In other words: only one out of each 10 suggestions (and one fifth of all of my posts) made it onto the Carte Blanche Music Top 2019.
Just like the recommendations you can find here every day, this year-end list differs largely from the majority of charts youâll find. The Top 100 below is filled with the finest pop and rock; and a much larger percentage of rock than youâll hear on the radio. Most tracks were independently released by upcoming artists from all over the world, and feature female vocals. Just a few statistics:
- 60% of the tracks are sung by women (up from an already impressive 58% in the Carte Blanche Music Top 2018)
- 53% of the tracks is guitar-based (10% more than last year)
- Apart from British and American acts, my list contains artists from Australia (14 of them!), France (9), Canada (5), the Netherlands (5), Norway (4), Ireland (3), Belgium (3), Spain (2), Sweden (2), Denmark (2), Germany (1), Israel (1) and Brazil (1)
- As a result, youâll not only hear lyrics in English, but also in French, Spanish and Swedish
- Apart from Dua Lipa and Lizzo, you wonât find any hits in this chart. Itâs a great way to discover artists, some of which I expect to break through in the years to come
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2019 features 100 tracks. You can listen to them via the Spotify player. As compiling the list was hard enough, the songs are sorted alphabetically. Just use the shuffle button if you prefer another order đ.
Meanwhile, you can read my original recommendations through the links below.

The Lottery Winners – Little Things
2019 started with a bang, with The Lottery Winnersâ Thatâs Not Entertainment as a (belated) Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. And now, the band have another go at the top prize. Little Things is the third single to be released ahead of their self-titled debut album, which is due on 13 March 2020.
The Lottery Winners is an album the band have spent the last two years recording tracks for, after being discovered by music industry legend Seymour Stein. You may know some of the other artists he signed, like a certain Madonna, and bands called The Ramones and Talking Heads (to name but a few). The album was produced by Tristem Ivemy (Frank Turner, The Holloways) and mastered at Abbey Road.
âThis was a difficult song for me to write. Itâs quite a sad oneâ, reflects frontman Thom Rylance. âItâs amazing how everything changes when you lose someone. Things become a lot more important. It does have a catchy chorus, and some nice âheysâ though, so donât worry.â
This may very well be the track for The Lottery Winners to win them the jackpot. As they predicted themselves: âthereâs nothing bigger than the little thingsâ.
