Wildcard (week 20):
Sparks – Nothing Is As Good As They Say It Is
This week sees the glorious comeback of some ‘old’ favourites, like Amanda Marshall, Queens Of The Stone Age and Tenacious D. And they don’t return with half-baked wannabe tracks. No, they provide us with some of the week’s best new music. Top of the bill, in that respect, are Sparks. Their new single has the unmistakable Sparks stamp on it. However, in 2023 – over 56(!!!) years after brothers Ron and Russell Mael made their first recordings as Urban Renewal Project – they sound as fresh as ever.
Yes, you read that well. The band ultimately known as Sparks first entered the studio in January 1967. They were soon discovered by Todd Rundgren and, sorry if this sounds lazy, ‘the rest is history’. Despite regularly changing styles, their songs are immediately recognizable. The same goes for their visual representations throughout the years. For almost six decades now, Sparks have been at the forefront of modern, artful pop music.
Their 26th studio album The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte (out on 26 May) was already preceded by its title track and Veronica Lake. But single #3, Nothing Is As Good As They Say It Is, is the most accessible track off it so far. A hi-NRG song with upbeat drums, guitars, Ron’s subtle piano and Russell’s authentic vocals, which could have been recorded when they formed FFS, with Scottish band Franz Ferdinand. Let me tell you it’s beyond good, and despite the tune’s title, you can trust me on this one.
Nothing Is As Good As They Say It Is by Sparks is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means it’ll be featured prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Wildcard (week 44):
Stone – Money (Hope Ain’t Gone)
Stone are the latest of an impressive row of exciting bands from Liverpool. The four-piece, led by Fin Power (son of The La’s and Cast’s John Power), are newly signed to major label Polydor. They call themselves ‘the underground voice for the lost youth’.
After a great summer which saw them supporting Sam Fender and Inhaler, they’re currently on tour with The Wombats. All of this will reach a climax with the release of their debut EP Punkadonk on 18 November. It was produced by the legendary Rich Costey, who worked with Muse, Rage Against The Machine, P!nk, My Chemical Romance, Franz Ferdinand, New Order, Weezer, Foo Fighters, Charli XCX, Arctic Monkeys and zillions of other artists.
Money (Hope Ain’t Gone) is Stone’s anthemic new single. Not once, but twice it slows down for a stadium-ready section, which leads up to an equally epic call-and-response part. This is as fun as rock can get. The track is their first that was co-written by Power and Elliot Gill. The former says about that: “It takes from both of our lives and the struggles we’ve faced. It’s about the hope for a better future and the struggles growing up in the Gen Z.”
Stone’s fiery new single Money (Hope Ain’t Gone) is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means it’ll feature prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Teenage Dads – Piano Girl
Teenage Dads are an Australian four-piece, influenced by the likes of Phoenix, The Strokes and Brian Wilson. But sure to be loved by fans of Franz Ferdinand and The Killers as well.
Last week, the quartet released their new EP Club Echo. It features eight tracks, including their latest singles Cheerleader and Thank You For The Honey, Honey.
New single Piano Girl is on it too, even twice. This was the first song guitarist Connor McLaughlin wrote for the EP, but his initial demo was a grungier pop-rock cut. The band re-created this version in the studio, and the resulting rendition, the Alternate Version, appears as a bonus track on the EP. The single version however, self-produced as always, is a much more radio-friendly affair.

Sophie Hunger – Everything Is Good
Sophie Hunger is a Swiss-born, Berlin-based singer, multi-instrumentalist and film composer. 28 August, she’ll release her seventh studio album Halluzinationen. Just like its predecessor Molecules, it was produced by Dan Carey (Franz Ferdinand, Bat For Lashes). The album was captured in Abbey Road, in a very special way. Over the course of two days, Hunger and her band played the entire album six times in live, continuous takes. The album was compiled out of these six takes. She identifies this approach as ‘full risk’, but it gave the album a vulnerability and intimacy that would have not been possible any other way.
Everything Is Good is the album’s new single. A great upbeat synth-pop track with an original twist, that sounds like a video game soundtrack. The song’s name is taken from a design by British artist David Shrigley. A big ‘thumbs up’ for this tune!
