Wildcard (week 26):
Grand Corps Malade & Melody Gardot – Souvenirs Manqués
Grand Corps Malade’s latest album is titled Mesdames, since it sees the artist collaborate with French female singers like Véronique Sanson and Louane. It was a huge success, with sales of over 550.000 in his home land alone. A Deluxe Edition of the album added four more songs, including Des Gens Beaux.
Two years after the release of the album, a new single is released off it. This time, Grand Corps Malade sings with Melody Gardot. “I very much wanted to propose a duet with Melody”, he explains. “It was my idea for her to sing in French and step out of her usual jazz/blues universe. When we discussed the song’s theme, we chose missing memories, all in self-mockery, in reference to the memory problems from which Melody suffered following her accident.”
Souvenirs Manqués by Grand Corps Malade & Melody Gardot is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. It’ll feature prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Grand Corps Malade – Des Gens Beaux
Two of my favourite French artists nowadays are Grand Corps Malade and Hoshi. This story starts with the latter. Or rather, this is a story that stars the latter. Hoshi is a very gifted singer-songwriter. Also, she’s a proud member of the LHBTIQ+ community. For open-minded people like you and me, that’s as normal as anything. But you must know that since Hoshi kissed onstage with one of her (female) band members, she received the most appalling threats.
That’s not all, alas. Last April, French ‘music expert’ Fabien Lecoeuvre gave his (sexist) contribution in a radio show. He argued (allow me to paraphrase) that modern popstars are hideous to look at. “Take Hoshi for instance”, he said. “She’s a huge talent without a doubt, but would you hang her poster in your room? She’s scary. She should give her songs to pretty singers.”
(I’ll give you a few seconds to catch your breath…)
Obviously, Hoshi responded to this statement (“You make me puke”), and many French artists denounced Lecoeuvre’s judgments. The most powerful support now comes from Grand Corps Malade. He wrote a song about the affair. Des Gens Beaux is a danceable pop tune, that includes the journalist’s original remarks, combined with cynical lyrics in support of his colleague singer. Even if you don’t speak French, you’ll be able to feel the emotions.
Having said that, at first listen, I thought I heard GCM sing ‘Il faut des jambons’ (we need hams), but the lyrics go ‘Il faut des gens beaux’ (we need beautiful people), which is much more on topic… Don’t forget to watch the great video as well!

Wildcard (week 51):
Grand Corps Malade – Pas Essentiel
Grand Corps Malade’s lyrics aren’t socially critical per se, but Fabien Marsaud (his real name) wears his heart on his sleeve. His April single Effets Secondaires (‘side effects’) for instance, was a COVID charity track. Applauding the real heroes of the Corona crisis, the healthcare workers, all proceeds were donated to two French hospitals.
The same crisis was the inspiration for GCM’s new single, but this time, he points the camera at the cultural sector. In his home country France, like in most of the rest of the world, theatres and venues are closed. Not only out of fear of being potential virus ‘super spreaders’, but also because the governments label them ‘not essential’. GCM opposes that view. In a French newspaper, he calls it cruel and unfair. “It made me want to speak up about all of those things that may seem non essential, but in the end make life worth living.” Elsewhere, he calls the song ‘an ode to freedom’.
GCM wrote the track only at the end of November, with Swiss DJ/producer Quentin Mosimann. It contains a repetitive chorus that sticks in your brain. But even more clever is the incorporation of the whistle from Break Machine’s 1984 hit Street Dance.
Two weeks ago, An Open Letter To Creatives by The Lottery Winners was the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. Grand Corps Malade’s new single is an equally heart-felt track, but about the cultural sector. I couldn’t agree more with the message of this song. That’s why Pas Essentiel is this week’s Wildcard!

Wildcard (week 17):
Grand Corps Malade – Effets Secondaires
Frenchman Fabien Marsaud originally wanted to become a basketball pro, but an accident prohibited him from fulfilling that ambition. This is reflected by his artist name Grand Corps Malade, which means ‘large sick body’. Now that a virus turned the whole world into a large sick body, the singer recorded a charity song. All of its proceeds will be donated to two French hospitals.
Effets Secondaires (‘side effects’) features Grand Corps Malade’s characteristic speak-singing style. It sits on top of an impressive composition by Swiss DJ/producer Quentin Mosimann, who also produced GCM’s upcoming album.
Obviously, the song applauds the real heroes of the Corona crisis, the healthcare workers. But it also points at other global disasters taking place. It warns that if Corona showed us one thing, it’s that we’re all in this together. Sooner or later, the problems of total strangers will become your problems as well. We’re all in the same boat, fighting the same threats.
A universal message that transcends the current pandemic. It’ll feature on top of this blog for a whole week as the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!

Your ‘All-Time’ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming – often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which I’ll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesn’t mean the blog is closing down. It’ll continue to be the home of my ‘best of’ collection (Werner’s Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, I’ll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your ‘All-Time’ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. You’ll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. Your Favourites (2021)
My container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2021 doesn’t only include all of the 998 songs I recommended last year. It also holds the 100 best tracks in my opinion, the Carte Blanche Music Top 2021, which I published last week. But that’s only my selection. Isn’t it more interesting to see which of my recommendations you read the most? In other words: which of them were Your Favourites in 2021?
Apparently, the Carte Blanche Music blog has a strong archive function. A quarter of the Top 100 below consists of blog posts from earlier years, which you find via search engines. ‘Google is your friend’, as they say… Also, I think it’s wonderful to see young and upcoming artists like Angèle, Aili x Transistorcake, Mina Okabe, Eyjaa and Videoclub having more than one track amongst your favourites. These are acts to keep an extra keen eye on!
Thank you for being such loyal visitors of Carte Blanche Music. Follow me on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram and you won’t miss a single recommendation. You’ll find all of these brand-new songs and more in my daily updated Spotify playlist.
