Wildcard (week 13):
Jesse Hite – How Did I
Jesse Hite was born in the United States. Nowadays, he lives in the French countryside as a musician, producer and singer-songwriter. He has taken his lyrics and songwriting to a whole new level by combining his experience exploring and living on the West Coast of America, travels through Asia and Europe and time spent living in France. His songs are groovy, atmospheric tracks with poppy hooks and deep stories.
How Did I is the latest example. Itâs a great tune with a catchy chorus and a dark, yet danceable groove. It comes with heavy drums, guitars, vocals and synths with melodic overlays. Lyrically, Hite explains, the song has multiple meanings: âI was really talking about:
- Being trapped in a cycle of depression (how did I get here in my head after being such a happy kid)
- Feeling trapped during the pandemic (being locked in a âcageâ; confined between four walls)
- Thinking about how I got to France and the chances/circumstances that must have happened for me to write music in France
All related to this initial question, âHow did I end up here?â.â
The track is slated to appear om his long awaited EP Volume 1, which will be released in June 2023.
Jesse Hiteâs new single How Did I is this weekâs Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means itâll be featured prominently at the top of the blog for a full seven days.

Jesse Hite – When It All Comes Down
Never heard of Jesse Hite? Youâre not to blame, When It All Comes Down is only his debut single. But what a way to start a career!
Jesse Hite is an American artist, who currently lives in France. This first release is equal parts funk and soul, in a way Jamie Lidell, Jamie Woon, or even Hall & Oates combined them. And the horn section at the end makes it even groovier. His debut EP, with even more of this, is something to look forward to. It comes out this Spring.

A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming â often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which Iâll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesnât mean the blog is closing down. Itâll continue to be the home of my âbest ofâ collection (Wernerâs Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, Iâll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. Youâll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links.
