Maxïmo Park – What Equals Love?
After the title track, What Did We Do To You To Deserve This? and Get High (No, I Don’t), What Equals Love? is the fourth single off Maxïmo Park’s new album Risk To Exist. All 11 tracks were recorded completely live, with Tom Schick (Wilco, Beck) producing.
What Equals Love? is the most synth-pop moment on the album. In other words: it’s the track that is furthest away of Maxïmo Park’s signature sound. An experiment that turns out very well, in my opinion. Lyrically, the song is about being in love with what you’re doing or being in love with life.
Maxïmo Park – Risk To Exist
Lovely to have Maxïmo Park back on the scene. Not that they have been away, really. The band release their sixth album Risk To Exist on 21 April and announce they have added more ‘soulful grooves’ to their trademark hook-laden melodies. The record was recorded completely live in Wilco’s studio The Loft in Chicago, with Tom Schick (Wilco, Beck) producing. Mimi Parker from the band Low lends his warm voice to five of the tracks.
One of those is the title track, a plea for humanity, which has been chosen as the first single off the album.

The Pale White – Medicine
Dire Straits, Maxïmo Park, Prefab Sprout, Neil Tennant (Pet Shop Boys) and Sting are just some of the artists that call Newcastle home. Rock band The Pale White can be added to that list.
Following their eponymous debut EP (2017) and its follow-up Take Me To The Strange (2018), the three-piece just released new single Medicine. Their best so far, if you’d ask me. But since you don’t, let me just tell you the song has been a fan favourite for a while now, after making several appearances at previous live shows. Go and see (and hear) for yourself, when the band head over to Europe in April, to play their first ever shows outside their home country, supporting Sam Fender.
Speaking about the new song, singer/guitarist Adam Hope says: “Medicine is about the mundane greyness you feel when you get stuck in a rut and caught in an endless haze while searching for your own personal remedy.”

Pacific – Life In Short
Pacific, a new band from Northwich, Cheshire, has just completed a summer tour across the UK, sharing stages with the likes of Razorlight, Maxïmo Park, Toploader, The Hoosiers, Starsailor and more. But besides live, their big melodies, energetic grooves and anthemic sound also fare well on the radio.
Life In Short is Pacific’s new single. They promise more ‘fresh and exciting new material’ for the coming months.
Your favourites (May 2017)
Another month has passed. Every day I threw my musical tips upon you and every time you decided whether or not to read them. Fair enough. But exactly which recommendations have been viewed the most in the month of May? In other words, what tracks were your favourites among my favourites? This is your Top 10:
- The The – We Can’t Stop What’s Coming
- Julian Velard – Sweatpants On The Living Room Floor
- Ride – All I Want
- Triggerfinger – Flesh Tight
- Moon Taxi – Two High
- Nemesea – Dance In The Fire
- Toploader – Roll With The Punches
- Maxïmo Park – What Equals Love?
- Kasabian – Ill Ray (The King)
- TANA – Why Can’t I Love You (Live)
Interesting to see that no less than half of the best viewed songs in May were rock tracks. And all of these tracks were by bands that exist for some time already. So these figures don’t necessarily mean that rock was the main interest of the Carte Blanche Music visitor last month. They can also indicate that bands with a longer history have a larger following (which makes sense), who are curious for their heroes’ latest output. They listened to the songs, that’s for sure, but did they also like them? The only one who knows that is you…
Another noteworthy fact: two songs in this Top 10 (Triggerfinger and Nemesea) were placed here within the last few days. So it’s very well possible they’ll show up in June’s ranking of your favourites as well.
And lastly, the blog that was viewed the most in May was about a song that was 15 years in the making. Welcome back, Matt Johnson!
Of course, all of these tracks – and about 400 more – can be found in my Carte Blanche Music Spotify playlist, filled with the best new music 2017 produced so far!
