Middle Kids – R U 4 Me?
18 months have passed since Australian guitar-pop trio Middle Kids released new music. Now, the band around lead singer and songwriter Hannah Joy is back with R U 4 Me? Itâs faster and more furious than before, but as catchy as ever. As always, it combines infectious melodies with raucous, arena-worthy indie rock. But this time, thereâs more of an edge to it, probably courtesy of producer Lars Stalfors (St Vincent, Cold War Kids, Soccer Mommy).
Explaining the inspiration for the song, Joy says: âI was at university once and there were all these signs on the walls saying âBE NICE ITâS NOT THAT HARD.â The tone of the message itself actually wasnât very nice or kind⊠We are always looking around at other people thinking âare you on my team?â. I think this just results in us all feeling lonely.â
Middle Kidsâ new single comes with a moving music video, focusing on a young boy who struggles to fit in. It tells a story of youth, peer pressure, social isolation and the joy of finding a place to belong.

Middle Kids – Beliefs And Prayers
In preparation of their upcoming six-track EP New Songs For Old Problems (out on 24 May), Middle Kids release a third teaser. Following Salt Eyes and Real Thing, the Australian indie rock trio just put out Beliefs And Prayers.
Just like its title, the song is built around two sections. The first half is up-tempo and catchy, with swirling guitars and driving drum patterns. Hannah Joy puts a lot of variety in her vocals, before launching into a soaring chorus. In the second half, things slow down considerably, before building back up to the sweeping chorus.
Based on the singles, the new EP is very unlikely to disappoint.

Middle Kids – Real Thing
Only a year after their debut album Lost Friends, Australian indie rock trio Middle Kids have an all-new mini album ready. New Songs For Old Problems will be out on 24 may, and is set to include six tracks.
One of those, Real Thing, is released as a teaser single. A melancholic, yet catchy and accessible slice of power pop, that puts Hannah Joyâs beautiful voice in the limelight.

Dancer – Fears
After publisher Snowhill Songs did a great job putting Aussie quartet Dancer on the map, a label stepped in to â hopefully â finish the job. Mirror Records is part of Mirror Group, who manage Gang Of Youths and launched the career of Middle Kids. Sounds like a good home for the lads.
As happens more often, the label decided to start from scratch and pull all available music from the streaming platforms. Recently, it re-released last yearâs Dreamer as the bandâs official debut single with them. Dancerâs second single however, is brand-new. In line with its title â Fears â it has a frantic, almost hypnotic beat that adds suspense to the song. Lyrically, it explores the themes of fear and the relationship our world has with the concept.
Both Dreamer and Fears will appear on Dancerâs debut EP, which is due out on 3 December. Itâll contain a total of 6 tracks. One of these is a new version of last yearâs Show Me The Way, which also disappeared from the internet since I wrote about it.

Carte Blanche Music Top 2019
Ahead of your favourites among this yearâs Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which I publish on New Yearâs Day, I round off 2019 with my personal choices.
The last year, I introduced you to 979 great new songs via my container playlist Carte Blanche Music; almost 57 hours of music. Exactly 500 of those translated into a written endorsement through this blog. In other words: only one out of each 10 suggestions (and one fifth of all of my posts) made it onto the Carte Blanche Music Top 2019.
Just like the recommendations you can find here every day, this year-end list differs largely from the majority of charts youâll find. The Top 100 below is filled with the finest pop and rock; and a much larger percentage of rock than youâll hear on the radio. Most tracks were independently released by upcoming artists from all over the world, and feature female vocals. Just a few statistics:
- 60% of the tracks are sung by women (up from an already impressive 58% in the Carte Blanche Music Top 2018)
- 53% of the tracks is guitar-based (10% more than last year)
- Apart from British and American acts, my list contains artists from Australia (14 of them!), France (9), Canada (5), the Netherlands (5), Norway (4), Ireland (3), Belgium (3), Spain (2), Sweden (2), Denmark (2), Germany (1), Israel (1) and Brazil (1)
- As a result, youâll not only hear lyrics in English, but also in French, Spanish and Swedish
- Apart from Dua Lipa and Lizzo, you wonât find any hits in this chart. Itâs a great way to discover artists, some of which I expect to break through in the years to come
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2019 features 100 tracks. You can listen to them via the Spotify player. As compiling the list was hard enough, the songs are sorted alphabetically. Just use the shuffle button if you prefer another order đ.

Hayley Mary – The Piss, The Perfume
So, I was in Australia the last month. A great country/continent, with a great music scene. A lot of bands from down under have graced these pages already, and I will continue to ask your attention for them.
One of Australiaâs most popular bands is The Jezabels. With the group on hiatus since 2017, it was only a matter of time before frontwoman Hayley Mary went solo. Her debut single The Piss, The Perfume was produced by Scott Horscroft (Silverchair, Middle Kids, The Presets). Part punk, part classic American rock, the track doubles as both a love song and an ode to the singer-songwriterâs hometown Sydney.
