Niko Rubio – Hold Me Down
Here at Carte Blanche Music HQ we write about circa 500 new songs per year. But that’s only a small portion of the hundreds of tunes we listen to each week. This makes that even for us it’s difficult to guess which artists we spend most of our time with. Therefore, we eagerly await Spotify Wrapped at the end of the year, for no one knows our listening habits better than Spotify. Last year, according to Wrapped, Niko Rubio was our favourite artist. We listened to her for 250 minutes. Quite honestly, that surprised us as well…
But they’re right (of course); we love Niko Rubio. We wrote about most of the singles she put out last year. And here’s another one!
Hold Me Down is her first single of 2022. Thanks to pumping guitars and an irresistible beat it’s her biggest and boldest yet. She says about the track: “Hold Me Down is my sexy New Year’s anthem. I can’t wait for you to dance in your living room and accidentally call your newest fling at 12 a.m.💕.”
Meanwhile, Rubio puts the finishing touches on her forthcoming sophomore EP, which will be out this Spring. Obviously, we can’t wait!

Niko Rubio – Go With You
Carte Blanche Music is a one-man operation and all of us are pretty busy otherwise as well. In other words: time is limited, but the pile of new music nearly doubles every week. Luckily is not all equally great, to put it mildly. I only recommend songs I’m 100% behind, but I also like to introduce you to new acts. Although this means I can’t write about each new release of artists I love, there are exceptions. This is one of those…
I’ve been following rising singer-songwriter Niko Rubio since she released her major label debut single You Could Be The One in May. Last month, I thought its follow-up Bed was simply too good to ignore. And now, the 20-year-old California-bred artist is doing it again. How could I not go with a song that’s named Go With You? Especially when it’s another banger in my ears.
Go With You is an alt-rock kind of track, with strumming guitars and a driving beat throughout. The title is accentuated by pounding drums. Hopefully, this song will confirm that three is the magic number.

Niko Rubio – Bed
Surveys (often commissioned by radio stations) appear to indicate most people still discover new music via the radio. That may be true, but I can’t believe most people discover new artists via the radio. The reason is simple: radio hardly plays any new artists. When they play new music, 95 out of 100 times it’s new music by well-known artists. Alas, radio doesn’t take any chances anymore. Every station plays the same music, servicing the same group of people. Not the most adventurous people.
Meanwhile, there’s an explosion of new music by emerging artists on streaming services. Over 60.000 (mostly new) tracks are added to Spotify every day! Not all equally good, of course, so how do you find the needles in that enormous hay stack? Well, via blogs like Carte Blanche Music for instance. Where the bloggers select their own music, and write about it out of genuine enthusiasm. Without any commercial interest. Hell no, this hobby only costs us money… For the love of music!
Five weeks ago, I hoped to help you discover Niko Rubio. I absolutely loved her debut single You Could Be The One, and I still do. In line with the song’s title, I thought she might be a future superstar. Actually, I still do. It just hasn’t materialized yet. The track deserved more than the 50.000 streams it attracted.
But here is Rubio’s new single, Bed! It unfolds in sultry grooves and snarling guitar riffs as Niko slips into a state of feverish infatuation. ‘I like it when you say my name / Tastes like candy on my brain / I’m so dumb for you, love’.
Both tracks will be on her forthcoming debut EP, slated for release this Summer.

Wildcard (week 19): Niko Rubio – You Could Be The One
Following her first single I Dreamt About You Last Night (2019), things got quiet around Niko Rubio. But now she’s back with what a press statement calls her ‘debut single’. In other words: forget about the other one, the future starts here.
Danielle Rubio, better known as Niko, is an emerging singer, songwriter and guitarist from the South Bay of Los Angeles. The 20-year-old began her love affair with music when she was just a kid. In her early teens, she listened to artists like the XX, Bob Dylan and Shakira. Later on, she added Vampire Weekend, Lana Del Rey, Erykah Badu and Twenty One Pilots to her tastes. Growing up in Mexican culture, Niko liked the mariachi and banda music her grandparents played at home as well.
This diverse set of influences translates into her own eclectic style. Take her new single You Could Be The One, for instance. A kicky pop-rock track with a shimmering chorus, accentuated with pulsating guitars, groovy percussion and Rubio’s soulful vocals. It’s the first song from her forthcoming debut EP, due out this Summer.
This week, You Could Be The One by Niko Rubio is the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. As such, you’ll find it at the top of the blog for a full week.

Your ‘All-Time’ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming – often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which I’ll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesn’t mean the blog is closing down. It’ll continue to be the home of my ‘best of’ collection (Werner’s Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, I’ll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your ‘All-Time’ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. You’ll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If you’re an artist, don’t be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprised…
Enjoy and thanks for joining the ride so far. Follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist (click ‘♥’ in Spotify) for many more recommendations to come!
