Portugal. The Man – Feel It Still (‘Weird Al’ Yankovic Remix)
Usually, I’m not too fond of remixes. At the same time, I’m a huge fan of ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic’s, especially of his often hilarious polkas. And once again, ‘Weird Al’ proves to be the exception to the rule. I adore this ‘polkafied’ version of Portugal. The Man’s Feel It Still.
Just to remind you, the original version stands as the biggest rock crossover hit since Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know (both of which are far from rock hits in my book, by the way). It went on to break the record for most weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart.
I’m looking forward to see where Yankovic’s remix will bring it ?

Wildcard (week 34):
Blonde Diamond – We Just Wanna Dance
Even though they don’t have any huge hits to their name (yet), you may still know Vancouver-based band Blonde Diamond. They’ve supported bands like Portugal. The Man, Broken Social Scene, Bishop Briggs and Chromeo on tours across Canada, Europe, Australia, the US and India. The alt-pop group’s eagerly awaited debut album Magnetic Strangers will be out on 23 September.
We Just Wanna Dance is the fourth single to be released ahead of the long-player. Slowly bouncing, it’s danceable indeed, but it also has twangy guitars that remind of ‘Twin Peaks’ and spoken parts that could’ve been taken from a Grace Jones track. All in all, it’s great track to whet our appetite for the forthcoming album.
Blonde Diamond’s We Just Wanna Dance is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. It’ll feature prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Blonde Diamond – Red Flags
Even though they don’t have any huge hits to their name (yet), you may still know Vancouver-based band Blonde Diamond. They’ve supported bands like Portugal. The Man, Broken Social Scene, Bishop Briggs and Chromeo on tours across Canada, Europe, Australia, the US and India. The alt-pop group’s eagerly awaited debut album is expected in 2022.
Their full-length’s first single sheds light on abusive relationships. “Red Flags is a retrospective of moments leading up to the realization that a seemingly fairytale romance has slowly evolved into a dark, twisted, and manipulative stronghold”, says lead singer Alexis Young. “It’s the moment of clarity: realizing that walking away is stronger than trying to tough it out. And more importantly, understanding that you cannot try to fix someone else at the expense of your own well-being.”
With its energetic drums, sparkly keys, dreamy guitars, slinky bass and intimate vocals, Red Flags is a trademark Blonde Diamond track.

Eliza & The Delusionals – Sentimental
My recommendation of Eliza & The Delusionals’ Just Exist is one of the all time best-read posts on this blog. Apparently, the Australian band around Eliza Klatt already had a huge following early in their career. Undoubtedly, the number of fans has blown up since then, seeing their steady stream of great pop/rock tracks to date.
Following last Spring’s EP A State Of Living In An Objective Reality, they are now back with a brand-new song. It was written in collaboration with award winning Australian pop writer Sarah Aarons (Cosmo’s Midnight, Childish Gambino) and American songwriter/producer John Hill (WAFIA, Portugal. The Man). As hinted by the title Sentimental, it’s a song with a somewhat nostalgic feeling to it. Musically, it brings us back to the indie rock of the ‘90s and early ‘00s.
Eliza explains how it came together: “Kurt started playing some chords in a tuning he made on the tour bus. We knew we were going in for a writing session, so after coming up with a few ideas around the chords, we brought it into the studio with Sarah and John, and they really helped bring it to life. After having a few months of listening to the demo over and over, myself and Kurt added a bridge and the other parts before taking it into the studio with Ruby and Tex to record it.”
