Red Rum Club – The Elevation
For a great live act like Red Rum Club, not being able to play live is a horror scenario. Especially with a new album coming up, that was meant to be heavily promoted by a large chunk of gigs. Obviously, the Liverpudlian sextet are not the only ones with this problem.
Luckily, the tracks on Red Rum Clubâs upcoming sophomore album The Hollow Of Humdrum are not only future live staples. They are also very well tailored for radio airplay and inclusion in streaming playlists. The long-player (out on 2 October) contains a wide variety of songs. They range from acoustic ballads to disco themed festival anthems. Expect theatrical brass lines, pop choruses, rumbling bass lines, western guitars and Latin percussion. A melting pot spelled f-u-n.
Following former Carte Blanche Music Wildcard Ballerino, the band now put album opener The Elevation in the spotlights. Another euphoric and shamelessly funky pop tune that begs you to pump up the volume.

Wildcard (week 36):
Red Rum Club – Ballerino
If you like upbeat, optimistic, catchy summer tunes full of hooks and with a triumphant horn section (like I do), look no further! Red Rum Club, specialists in âhands in the airâ music, have a great new track out.
With their trademark feelgood songs, the Liverpool sextet are ambassadors and catalysts of good times. New single Ballerino is no exception. Lyrically, this track tackles toxic masculinity and the fear of really letting go.
Lead singer Fran Doran says: âI am always the fool that gets up first at a wedding. The âballerinoâ is me. The way I see it is that if Iâm dancing, then I donât know what youâre doing sitting there, you should be too. Ultimately, itâs about boys not dancing and that sense of unnecessary, toxic masculinity that stops people expressing themselves. Itâs like a Billy Elliot story, just forget what anyone else thinks and dance!â
Ballerino is the third single in anticipation of Red Rum Clubâs sophomore album The Hollow Of Humdrum. It’s set to be released on 2 October and was produced by Chris Taylor. He worked with Blossoms and The Coral before.
This week, Ballerino is the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, and will feature prominently at the top of this blog for a full 7 days!

Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming â often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which Iâll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesnât mean the blog is closing down. Itâll continue to be the home of my âbest ofâ collection (Wernerâs Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, Iâll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. Youâll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. Carte Blanche Music Top 2020
Ahead of your favourites among this yearâs Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which Iâll publish tomorrow, these are my personal choices from the songs that came out in 2020. This list holds only 100 tracks, but you can find all of my 994 recommendations in my container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2020.
As always, I love to share some statistics about the Carte Blanche Music Top 2020. These findings are further evidence of the fact that the music radio stations play for you is far from representative of the wealth of great new music out there. Thankfully, there are blogs like Carte Blanche Music that are independent and unbiased, and donât want to please everybody at the same time. Weâre here to surprise you with great new music, no matter what genre or gender, origin or orientation. Just a few statistics:
- Judging from this Top 100 alone (let alone the full container playlist), 2020 was a great year for pure pop music, young artists, â80s influences, independent releases, the Australian music scene, queer pop-rock and female vocalists
- A whopping 70% of the tracks in this yearâs list feature female lead vocals (and I thought the 60% in the Carte Blanche Music Top 2019 was impressive already)
- Overall, rock ruled. 54% of the tracks in my year-end chart is guitar-based (just over last yearâs tally)
- The list clearly shows there are more countries that produce great artists than Great-Britain and the United States alone. This year, more nationalities than ever are represented in my Top 100. Youâll also find artists from Armenia, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland
- As a result, although most lyrics are in English, youâll also hear songs (partly) sung in French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Swedish
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2020 features 100 tracks, which are presented below in alphabetical order. You can listen to them all via the Spotify player. If you prefer another order, just use the shuffle button đ.
