Wildcard (week 33):
Saint Etienne – Dive
Two months after the release of their album Home Countries and just weeks after the single Heather, Saint Etienne release the Dive EP. The title track is presented in the so called ‘3:35 Edit’, making it an easy guess what its running time is.
Dive is a fun combination of samba rhythms, horn arrangements, lush orchestrations and influences from disco and funk, which make it sound like one of those exotica (or ‘easy tune’) songs that came back into fashion halfway the nineties of the last century. At least, they did in the Netherlands… Brilliant track!
Singer Sarah Cracknell has this to say about it: “I started writing Dive with Carwyn Ellis in early 2016. We’d worked on my solo album together and were on a bit of a roll. I love the final result, it reminds me of care free summer days growing up in Home Counties Windsor fooling around on the Thames.”
Saint Etienne’s Dive features prominently on Carte Blanche Music this week, as it’s the new Wildcard! (you can find all of them in the Wildcards 2017 playlist).
Saint Etienne – Heather
I know nothing about football, except that the British band Saint Etienne named itself after a French football team. That was back in 1990. Undeservedly, they have never been as well-known abroad as they were back home. I still love the band’s early singles, such as Who Do You Think You Are (a Jigsaw cover), Like A Motorway, He’s On The Phone and Burnt Out Car.
But Saint Etienne have always continued to release albums. Last spring, their ninth studio album Home Countries appeared. After having served as a promotional track earlier in the year, the song Heather is out now as its new official single.

Wildcard (week 3):
Suki Waterhouse – OMG
Suki Waterhouse has been releasing music since 2016, but her first album I Can’t Let Go only came in 2022. Since then, the 32-year-old singer-songwriter has been working non-stop. She put out one-off singles, an EP, and collaborated with Belle & Sebastian and Local Natives. Next to that, Suki starred as Karen Sirko in the television miniseries ‘Daisy Jones & The Six’.
This new year will be all about her sophomore album. Just like her debut, it’ll be out on the legendary Sub Pop label (Nirvana, The Postal Service, The White Stripes, Saint Etienne, The Shins and many more). The record will be released later this year, but Waterhouse is tight-lipped about its title. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone however, she did reveal the album’s concept is ‘metamorphosis’. Arctic Monkeys served as a major sonic inspiration, but she’s also listening to Lucinda Williams, Doja Cat, Kelis, Marianne Faithfull, the Association, Angie Stone, William Bell, and Oasis currently. Quite a mixed bag…
If it’s anything to go by, her new single OMG is a sleazy pop-rock track. It’s full of ‘90s-tinged guitars and has a catchy chorus that’s sure to stick in your brain. In the song, the indie star searches for the person she was before succumbing to a toxic love affair.
OMG by Suki Waterhouse is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Perfect Son – It’s For Life
Last summer, I recommended the song Malomiasteczkowy by Dawid Podsiadło. A great song, but ‘difficult’, for it was sung in Polish. In that respect, It’s For Life by Perfect Son stands a better chance of being picked up outside his home country Poland, as it has English lyrics. The first good signs are already there; the song entered the European Border Breakers Chart at #50 last week. This position was achieved through airplay in Poland and Slovakia, but hopefully the song’s visibility in the EBBChart will stimulate radio stations in other countries to play the song as well.
Perfect Son is the stage name of Polish singer and producer Tobiasz Biliński. Sometime in 2016, just as the began to find success with his electropop project Coldair, he decided it was time for a radical change. Bilifiski restarted his career as Perfect Son, making complex yet accessible pop music. It even got him signed to legendary record label Sub Pop, once the home of The Jesus & Mary Chain, Nirvana, The Postal Service, Saint Etienne and The Shins, and currently of The Afghan Whigs, Fleet Foxes and Soundgarden, to name but a few.
Cast, Perfect Son’s debut album, is slated for release on 15 Februari 2019. It’s For Life is the long player’s first single.

Carte Blanche Music Top 2017
I’ll publish your choice (the most read Carte Blanche Music posts of the year) here tomorrow. An absolutely great and totally surprising list. But below you can find my selection of the best music that came out in 2017.
Narrowing down, that’s what making a year-end chart is about… In the past year, I brought 940 great new tracks to your attention via my container playlist Carte Blanche Music, dedicated 650 blog posts to providing you with background info, selected 289 of them honourably for my ‘best of the best’ playlist Werner’s Weekly and chose one song each week to be placed in the spotlights on the blog: the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard.
Now, the time has come to put all of that information together, and serve you with my very personal, now and then arbitrary, but over-all rather brilliant ? final playlist of the year: the Carte Blanche Music Top 2017.
It’s a Top 100. With 100 different artists in it. Needless to say it was a struggle. Not even all the Wildcards made this final list and some artists made more than one great song in the past year. Still, I only chose one. I won’t bother you with many statistics, but I’m delighted to say that 43% of the songs feature female lead vocals. I really hope this will become a trend in 2018 on radio and streaming playlists alike.
Because all 100 songs are dear to me, they are alphabetically ordered. Of course, you can listen to the Carte Blanche Music Top 2017 on Spotify, and the links below correspond with my original recommendations. Believe me, it doesn’t get better than this (play)list 😉 . Enjoy!
Boy Azooga – Face Behind Her Cigarette
The groove is back in today’s music and I can’t get enough of it! Take this debut release by Boy Azooga for instance.
The band, the brainchild of Cardiff native Davey Newington, has signed with the legendary Heavenly Recordings label that discovered artists like Manic Street Preachers, Saint Etienne and Doves in the nineties.
Boy Azooga plays psychedelic indie-pop/rock and this first single pays tribute to Nigerian funk icon William Onyeabor.

If the six best songs of the past week are enough for you, look no further. I selected them for you and present them here, in alphabetical order.
Click the links for a little bit of background and meanwhile, listen to all six of them through the Werner’s Weekly player in the sidebar…
