Sarpa Salpa – Somebody[flag country="gb"]
Sarpa Salpa are four friends who have featured regularly on the Carte Blanche Music blog since 2019. In the meantime, theyâve been picked up by British radio, resulting in sold-out shows and festival slots. With an appearance at the SXSW showcase festival in Texas planned for March, their international break-through appears to be imminent.
To put extra weight behind their efforts, the band kicks off 2022 with one of their strongest singles to date. Ready for airwaves and stages alike, Somebody starts with what could have been a house piano. Soon however a pumping bass, a driving beat and an infectious guitar melody take over.
Singer Marcus Marooth says about the track: âSomebody is a final goodbye to an old friend after 7 years together. Itâs the summary of realisation that we werenât meant to be and that we are both happier and better off where we are today. Itâs a token of thanks and respect to what was as we both head down new paths and better lives. Itâs also self reflective in my flaws in my past relationship and what I couldâve done better, what they deserved and simply werenât getting. Itâs my way of pushing her to find someone better than me and not lose confidence or faith in the world!â

Sarpa Salpa – Another Life[flag country="gb"]
For artists, recognition (and motivation) can come from various places. Family and friends are often amongst the first supporters. When well executed, live performances produce new fans that were unrelated to the act beforehand. Then, hopefully, curators at radio and streaming platforms will follow suit. Sarpa Salpa can hardly complain about support from radio. Obviously, family and friends are on board as well. As far as Iâm concerned, streaming gatekeepers could do better. And, like for any other band, itâs heart-breaking to see theyâve had to cancel all of their touring plans.
On the other hand, the Northampton five-piece ended 2020 on a high in the form of a grant from the (UK music licensing company) PPL Momentum Music Fund in December. This grant, supported by PRS Foundation, PPL, Spotify UK, Creative Wales, and Arts Council Northern Ireland has enabled the band to continue to progress by funding the recording, mixing, mastering and promotion of their sophomore EP. Additionally, this funding will back the release of the EP on vinyl and help the band promote the release through a series of live dates in 2021.
Weâll have to wait until 2 April for the EP to come out, but Another Life is Sarpa Salpaâs new single off it. An uplifting, upbeat pop song, that begs to be played live. The band have socially distanced gigs lined up for April through August. Fingers crossedâŠ

Sarpa Salpa – Stick To What You Know[flag country="gb"]
Sarpa Salpa was formed in 2017 by Marcus Marooth (vocals), George Neath (guitar), Ethan Whitby (bass) and Charlie Doe (drums). In August last year, the band became a five piece with the addition of Meg Amirghisvand (synths). Around that time, they came on my radar with their irresistible single Before It Goes Dark.
Now, the Northampton outfit are back with a new track. And it only takes one quick listen to know: Sarpa Salpa refuse to disappoint. Stick To What You Know is another one of their well-crafted pop songs. Danceable but credible, with catchy guitar lines, driving drums, and infectious oh-ohâs.
Lyrically, the song is less light-hearted. Itâs about defying the pressure to follow a traditional career path. Frontman Marcus Marooth says: âItâs about finding something that you love and pursuing it with everything youâve got. There is a lot of pressure in society to find a job, settle down then rinse and repeat. This track is about not settling for that 9-5 job you hate for the rest of your life. Something thatâs proved more than testing for everyone in 2020.â
Stick To What You Know is a new banger, thatâs sure to extend Sarpa Salpaâs status as radio darlings. Itâs the second single to be put out ahead of the bandâs sophomore EP, due for release in early 2021.

Sarpa Salpa – Say Something[flag country="gb"]
Following last yearâs great single Before It Goes Dark, Northampton’s Sarpa Salpa just put out their debut EP Say Something. The catchy title track is the bandâs new single. A bass-based banger with soaring synths. With Say Something, Sarpa Salpa created another upbeat, danceable track. Expect unexpected changes, hidden meanings and undeniable influences from the likes of Everything Everything, Tame Impala and Foals.

Sarpa Salpa – Before It Goes Dark[flag country="gb"]
Sarpa Salpa are a 4-piece alt-pop band from Northampton. George (guitar), Marcus (vocals/guitar), Ethan (bass) and Charlie (drums) take their influences from Foals, Tame Impala and Friendly Fires. Apparently, theyâre not afraid to raise high expectations. Even better: they donât disappoint.
Their first two, independently released, singles were met with praise, airplay and packed shows. Now, theyâre working on their debut EP, which is due out at the end of the year. Before It Goes Dark is the bandâs new single. A mid-tempo, yet danceable track. It tackles the frustration of not being able to stop the inevitable. On top of that, it proves parlandos donât have to be daft.

Your favourites (January 2020)
As you may have seen in the listing of most read Carte Blanche Music posts of the past year, Your Favourites (2019), Roi by Videoclub was the most popular of my recommendations. And it was by far the most popular. In fact, every single month of 2019, this was the most visited page on the whole blog. And all of that via organic searches, there was no strange activity (like bots) to be found. So, in short: this was a real hit, no holds barred. And it still is, actually, for also in January 2020, a year after publication, this is still the song that attracts the most visitors. Incredible! Yet, Iâve decided not to list it in these monthly charts anymore, in order to give another track the chance to show up.
For the same reason, I left another very popular post out of this Top 10: an article with photos of the best performances I saw on the ESNS showcase festival, halfway January. Just so you knowâŠ
That still leaves us with a very interesting listing of Your Favourites in the last month, with a surprising #1: Every One Of Us by Rick Astley was particularly popular just after the singer appeared live at Jools Hollandâs Annual Hootenanny. He didnât even sing this new track, by the way, but apparently the performance made people curious for it. Which is great, obviously. The only other â80s icons among my most popular tips are the Pet Shop Boys, whose latest Daft Punk-like single Monkey Business ends third.
Jaguar Jonze and Eliza & The Delusionals, who both have great new singles out, also feature in the Top 5. And at #9, surprise surprise, Videoclub still show up, with their follow-up to Roi, the former Carte Blanche Music Wildcard En Nuit.
Your full Top 10 of favourite blog posts in January is below. For an overview of the latest and greatest new music, check my 2020 container playlist Carte Blanche Music. Only one month into the new year, it already holds almost 120 tracks, good for over 7 hours of recent tracks. Have a listen and/or follow it through this link.
