Wildcard (week 17):
Sofi Tukker – JacarĂ©
You can leave it to Sofi Tukker to heat up the dance floor, and their new single is further proof of that.
JacarĂ© contains elements the American duo (consisting of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern), incorporated to great effect before. The track is dripping with a latin-inspired beat, a âcalienteâ piano and a horn(y) section. The lyrics are entirely in Portuguese. All in all, a tune that perfectly fits Sofi Tukkerâs well-documented affinity with Brazilian culture.
The song title means âalligatorâ in Brazil, but it can also define a woman in a sexual relationship. Youâll understand when you watch the accompanying video, which is as steamy as the song itself, and gives a supportive nod to the LGBTQ+ community.
The timing for this infectious stomper is impeccable, as the days are getting longer in Europe, the temperatures are rising and the sun is coming out more and more.
JacarĂ© by Sofi Tukker is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means itâll be featured prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Icona Pop & Sofi Tukker – Spa
A steamy collaboration if ever there was one. In the EDM world, both of these two duos are hot. Sweden-based Icona Pop already reached the mainstream with their 2012 debut single I Love It (feat. Charli XCX). Meanwhile, Americaâs Sofi Tukker (consisting of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern) are building a large audience of their own, via live gigs as well as radio.
Collaborative single Spa offers the best of both worlds. The beats and verses are trademark Sofi Tukker, while the chorus has all the right sing-along ingredients of an Icona Pop song. This results in a radio-friendly dance track that has the potential to set fire to both dancefloors and airwaves.
Gonna make you sweat!

The Knocks (feat. Sofi Tukker) – Brazilian Soul
Okay, the track is called Brazilian Soul, but itâs an all-American affair. An all-New York affair, to be precise, for thatâs where both Ben âB-Rocâ Ruttner and James âJPattâ Patterson (The Knocks), and Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern (Sofi Tukker) are based. Last year, the groups collaborated on Best Friend, which ended up on Sofi Tukkerâs album Treehouse. This new alliance can be found on The Knocksâs new album New York Narcotic, which also features guest vocalists like Foster The People, Method Man, and Alexis Krauss from Sleigh Bells.
As youâd expect from its title, Brazilian Soul has a sunny vibe, although it almost sounds more like the band Jungle than the participating acts themselves. The trackâs video culls together footage from Brazil’s rich culture and heritage, showing images from the lush Brazilian rainforest, to the soccer pitch, to the white sand beaches and dense urban city of SĂŁo Paulo.

Wildcard (week 38):
Sofi Tukker & Pabllo Vittar – Energia (Parte 2)
Make sure to go and see Sofi Tukker live, if you can. Last August, I saw the American duo, consisting of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern, at the Lowlands festival in the Netherlands. A great gig with inciting rhythms and good beats that got the whole crowd bouncing, while the often Portuguese lyrics gave an extra tropical flavour to the music. Itâs true, Sofi Tukker have a well-documented affinity for Brazilian culture, welcoming soca and bossa nova grooves into their hooky electro-pop.
One of the stand-out tracks during the set was a spiced-up version of last yearâs Energia, that has now been released as a single. This new mix includes an assist from the almighty Brazilian drag queen Pabllo Vitar and lives up to its title even more than the original. Imagine this tune being played out loud at a festival⊠If this doesnât make you dance, nothing will!
This week, Energia (Parte 2) by Sofi Tukker & Pabllo Vittar is the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This means the track is only one mouse click away for a whole week. You can find all of this yearâs powerplays in the Wildcards 2018 playlist.

Kuzko – Penelope
Kuzko are Danique van der Vlugt and Sam Ouwehand, two artists who do everything themselves. They may be Rotterdam-based, but their music has international potential. Their catchy synth-pop will go down well with fans of acts like Confidence Man, Sofi Tukker and Purple Disco Machine. Meanwhile, their lyrics are witty, and deal with everything from consumerism and high school dramas to cliché love adventures.
As they recently proved with their show at the ESNS 2022 festival, Kuzko are a fun live act. But donât be mistaken, theyâre skilled musicians as well, and Van der Vlugt is a really good singer. During the set they played tracks off their first EP Teardrops On The Dancefloor. But they also premiered two brand-new songs: Rich And Famous and Penelope.
The latter is the duoâs new single. In the best Kuzko tradition itâs a colourful tune with plenty â80s influences and another one of their contagious vocal hooks. Sure to put a smile on your face! Penelope is the first track to be released ahead of their sophomore EP thatâs scheduled to appear this spring.
