The Bamboos – Ride On Time
Back in 1989, Italo-house/Euro-dance act Black Box released Ride On Time. A great floor filler, based on a vocal sample of Loleatta Hollowayâs 1980 single Love Sensation. Her lyric “Thank you baby, ‘cause you’re right on time” was misquoted in the song title. Nevertheless, it topped several European charts and went on to become the bestselling single of the year in the UK.
32 Years later, the song gets a complete make-over. Australian nine-piece The Bamboos turn the track into an infectious soul/funk tune. Itâs not the first time they sink their teeth in another track to turn it completely upside-down. They did so before with songs by everyone from James Blake, Kings Of Leon to London Grammar.
Their reinvented version kicks off with tight, up-tempo drums, followed by the three piece horn section, which carries the songâs hook. Subsequently, The Bamboosâ stellar singer Kylie Auldist does what no-one would have thought possible: she does complete justice to Loleatta Hollowayâs inimitable vocal.
Ride On Time will be the closing track on their upcoming tenth album Hard Up, which will be out on 7 May. Itâll also feature the bandâs three 2020 singles Hard Up, While You Sleep (feat. Ev Jones) and Power Without Greed.

The Bamboos – Night Time People
The Bamboos are an Australian funk and soul band that was formed in Melbourne right at the start of this century. Last autumn, the 9-piece scored a Carte Blanche Music Wildcard with their cover of The Easybeatsâ Iâll Make You Happy, but this year, theyâre back with some originals.
Night Time People, The Bamboosâ eighth studio album, is their first long player in three yearsâ time. It was preceded by the singles Lit Up and Broken (which came in three versions, with three different MCs). Third in line is the albumâs title track, that allows singer Kylie Auldist to shine.

Wildcard (week 47):
The Bamboos (feat. Montaigne) – Iâll Make You Happy
50 years ago⊠I wasnât even born then! But itâs true: it’s 50 years since iconic Australian band The Easybeats hit the UK charts with their timeless pop song Friday On My Mind.
At the end of this week, in celebration of that anniversary, the Rebeat EP will appear, uniting several contemporary Australian bands: Daniel Johns’ Boom Tish project, KLP, LDRU feat. Nicole Millar, San Cisco, and eight-piece The Bamboos.
The latter bandâs contribution, their version of The Easybeatsâ Iâll Make You Happy, features guest vocals from singer-songwriter Jessica Cerro, better known by her stage name Montaigne. The addition of a brass arrangement gives the classic track a soulful vibe to great effect.
This is how a homage should be done, and thatâs why Carte Blanche Music decided upon its own mark of honour to this ode, by pronouncing Iâll Make You Happy by The Bamboos (feat. Montaigne) this weekâs Wildcard!

Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming â often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which Iâll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesnât mean the blog is closing down. Itâll continue to be the home of my âbest ofâ collection (Wernerâs Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, Iâll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. Youâll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If youâre an artist, donât be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprisedâŠ

Your Favourites (2021)
My container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2021 doesnât only include all of the 998 songs I recommended last year. It also holds the 100 best tracks in my opinion, the Carte Blanche Music Top 2021, which I published last week. But thatâs only my selection. Isnât it more interesting to see which of my recommendations you read the most? In other words: which of them were Your Favourites in 2021?
Apparently, the Carte Blanche Music blog has a strong archive function. A quarter of the Top 100 below consists of blog posts from earlier years, which you find via search engines. âGoogle is your friendâ, as they say⊠Also, I think itâs wonderful to see young and upcoming artists like AngĂšle, Aili x Transistorcake, Mina Okabe, Eyjaa and Videoclub having more than one track amongst your favourites. These are acts to keep an extra keen eye on!
Thank you for being such loyal visitors of Carte Blanche Music. Follow me on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram and you wonât miss a single recommendation. Youâll find all of these brand-new songs and more in my daily updated Spotify playlist.

Montaigne – Ready
The last thing I heard from Montaigne (the Sydney-based singer whose real name is Jessica Cerro), was her collaboration with The Bamboos. Their cover version of The Easybeatsâ 1966 single Iâll Make You Happy was a Carte Blanche Music Wildcard at the end of 2017.
Now, Montaigne is back with her most anthemic single so far. Ready is a soundtrack for activism, built around simple drumbeats, her soaring vocals, and the irresistible hook âI think Iâm ready to go, I think Iâm readyâ. The singer explains: âTo me the song is about this political moment, where humanity is starting to realise how actually cooked this planet is, that it never had to be like this, and that we have the power now to overthrow those whoâve forced us into this corner.â
Ready is released ahead of Montaigneâs second album Complex, which is set for release on 30 August. The list of producers who helped shape the album reads like a who-is-who of modern pop music. On Complex, she worked with Tony Buchen (Courtney Barnett, The Preatures), Wynne Bennett (Twin Shadow, Janelle Monae), Kyle Shearer (Dua Lipa, Broods, K.Flay), Mozella (Madonna, Miley Cyrus, One Direction), Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Foals), Mario SpĂ€te (Tkay Maidza, Urthboy, Allday) and Eric J Dubowsky (Flume, St. Vincent, Dua Lipa).
