Wildcard (week 9):
The Heavy – I Feel The Love
Put a big red cross in your agenda to mark 21 April. Thatâs the date The Heavy will release their sixth album, Amen. You might want to set your alarm as well, just to be sure. For a new album by this British quartet always turns out to be a true âeventâ. Especially since itâs three and a half year since they last put out new music. The long-player was produced by Tchad Blake, who worked with everybody from Crowded House and Pearl Jam to Sheryl Crow and The Black Keys.
I Feel The Love is the bandâs new single. In good The Heavy tradition, itâs full of energy. The song combines rock, funk, soul and â first and foremost â a healthy dose of gospel. As a result, itâs a super swinging affair that soothes the mind and spirit. An ultra American sound for a band from the European continent. Praise The Heavy!
Speaking about the track, front man Kelvin Swaby says: âThe world feels as if itâs burning down at times and that itâs being torn apart by divisive agendas and evil personality traits. This is a solid reminder that as challenging as that is and may feel from day to day, we feel and will always believe, in Love. Always and forever.â
This week, we totally feel the love for The Heavyâs new single. Itâs the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means itâll be featured prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

The Heavy – Last Man Standing
The Heavy only released their fifth album Sons last May, but since then they put out three brand-new songs already. Last Man Standing follows Put It On The Line and Everything I Got. Itâs another horn-tinged, electro soul-based, funk-infused track.
The British rock band doesnât show any signs of slowing down. Lucky us!

Wildcard (week 20):
The Heavy – Fighting For The Same Thing
On 17 May, British rock band The Heavy will release their fifth album Sons. Fighting For The Same Thing is the horn-tinged, electro soul-based, funk-infused new single off it. The song states that progress is only achievable when we all stand together as a unified force.
âFighting For The Same Thing is a testament to the work that is needed to make the relationships that we consider important in our daily lives, healthier and more fulfilling, whether family, soulmates, partners, or council governments,â says lead singer Kelvin Swaby. âItâs the feeling of knowing the choices and events that affect our idea of a better day, and being part of those decisions, when we become complacent and comfortable, things fall apart and fighting for whatâs right, made the future for generations ever brighter action is always required.â
This week, Fighting For The Same Thing by The Heavy features prominently on this blog as the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!

Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming â often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which Iâll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesnât mean the blog is closing down. Itâll continue to be the home of my âbest ofâ collection (Wernerâs Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, Iâll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. Youâll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. Carte Blanche Music Top 2019
Ahead of your favourites among this yearâs Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which I publish on New Yearâs Day, I round off 2019 with my personal choices.
The last year, I introduced you to 979 great new songs via my container playlist Carte Blanche Music; almost 57 hours of music. Exactly 500 of those translated into a written endorsement through this blog. In other words: only one out of each 10 suggestions (and one fifth of all of my posts) made it onto the Carte Blanche Music Top 2019.
Just like the recommendations you can find here every day, this year-end list differs largely from the majority of charts youâll find. The Top 100 below is filled with the finest pop and rock; and a much larger percentage of rock than youâll hear on the radio. Most tracks were independently released by upcoming artists from all over the world, and feature female vocals. Just a few statistics:
- 60% of the tracks are sung by women (up from an already impressive 58% in the Carte Blanche Music Top 2018)
- 53% of the tracks is guitar-based (10% more than last year)
- Apart from British and American acts, my list contains artists from Australia (14 of them!), France (9), Canada (5), the Netherlands (5), Norway (4), Ireland (3), Belgium (3), Spain (2), Sweden (2), Denmark (2), Germany (1), Israel (1) and Brazil (1)
- As a result, youâll not only hear lyrics in English, but also in French, Spanish and Swedish
- Apart from Dua Lipa and Lizzo, you wonât find any hits in this chart. Itâs a great way to discover artists, some of which I expect to break through in the years to come
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2019 features 100 tracks. You can listen to them via the Spotify player. As compiling the list was hard enough, the songs are sorted alphabetically. Just use the shuffle button if you prefer another order đ.
Meanwhile, you can read my original recommendations through the links below.

Nix Dadry (feat. Julie Claire) – Station Street East
Fans of Lenny Kravitz, The Heavy and Aerosmith: please let me introduce you to your new favourite artist, Nix Dadry. Originally from the West Midlands, UK, he now lives in London. Following his 2018 debut album Magic Water, he just released his new EP Screwface.
Station Street East is the EPâs first single. Moved by the black American roots of blues, soul and funk, Dadry describes its musical style as âmulti-influenced rockâ. Lyrically, it reflects on where he grew up, and comments on where we come from in life and where we end up.
Finally, I think a special mention of the uncredited featured singer is in place: Julie Claire isnât just a background singer, she really adds to the song.|
