Wildcard (week 41):
The Reytons – Let Me Breathe[flag country="gb"]
The Reytons have amassed over 110 million Spotify listens so far, and play huge venues. Apparently they have an impressive fan base, but they arenât a household name to the general public yet. Indeed, yet, for I think their new single is a huge step in the right direction.
With Let Me Breathe, Jonny Yerrell, Joe OâBrien, Lee Holland and Jamie Todd created another high-octane, explosive cut. But it has that little extra that makes it even catchier than their other tracks. The four-piece deliver it with the bravado of Oasis circa Definitely Maybe. It comes with insatiable guitar lines, a walloping bass and an anthemic melody that could turn it into a classic. Lyrically, Let Me Breathe deals with needing to be free and breaking away.
The South Yorkshire indie rockers will release their third album Ballad Of A Bystander independently on 19 January 2024.
Let Me Breathe by The Reytons is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

The Reytons – Broke Boyâs Cartel[flag country="gb"]
The Reytons donât waste any time. Hot on the heels of their Carte Blanche Music Wildcard Jealous Type, the Yorkshire quartet put out their fourth EP May Seriously Harm You And Others Around You. A classic example of âall killers, no fillersâ, it contains three previously released tracks and three new ones.
One of the latter tunes is the new focus track. Broke Boyâs Cartel is another up-tempo rock song with âbangerâ written all over it. Finishing in less than three minutes, itâs a burst of energy. Sounds like itâs made for live arenas, but in the meantime, itâs hopeful to see radio stations across the UK are supporting the EP.
The bandâs loyal fans show their commitment as well. Thanks to their enthusiasm, the EP entered the UK Album Top 40. An unprecedented achievement for a 6-track record (but a well-deserved one)!

Wildcard (week 5):
The Reytons – Jealous Type[flag country="gb"]
Are you a Whatever People Say I Am, Thatâs What Iâm Not-era Arctic Monkeys fan? Then you need to get to know The Reytons. This rising Yorkshire quartet has the same unashamedly anthemic rock ethic that Arctic Monkeys came to the scene with.
At the start of their career, in 2017/8, The Reytons released three EPâs in quick succession. Since then, they put out seven singles, Jealous Type being the latest. It kicks off with strong guitar riffs which are a perfect launch pad for lead singer Johnny Yerrellâs strong lyrics. There’s a raw element to the production that gives the song a certain edge. In that respect, it recalls the colossal live shows that gained The Reytons a large following. Itâs impressive to hear how the band reproduce that sound in the studio.
Jealous Type precedes a new EP, titled May Seriously Harm You And Others Around You, due out later in February.
This whole week, The Reytonsâ Jealous Type will feature prominently at the top of this blog as the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!

Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites (2017-2022)[flag country="##"]
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming â often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which Iâll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesnât mean the blog is closing down. Itâll continue to be the home of my âbest ofâ collection (Wernerâs Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, Iâll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. Youâll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If youâre an artist, donât be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprisedâŠ
Enjoy and thanks for joining the ride so far. Follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist (click ââ„â in Spotify) for many more recommendations to come!
