Thunder Fox – Head In The Clouds
Fans of Thunder Fox will agree itâs about time the Sydney quintet released their third album. Well, the wait is almost over. The long-player, Sanctuary, will be out on 18 November. Meanwhile, the band put out the albumâs opening track Head In The Clouds as their new single. An exciting cocktail of musical styles, the song mixes pop, funk and R&B. But it all starts with a heavenly slice of gospel. Elsewhere, we hear intoxicating rhythms, triumphant horns and blissful, soulful vocals.
âIf Thunder Fox is known for anything, itâs being able to avoid taking things too seriously,â says vocalist and guitarist Sam Dawes. âHead in The Clouds came to me in a blue dream on one of those hot nights where your brain feels sticky. I think the lyrics are self-explanatory, so I wonât provide an in depth analysis. The point is, we wanted to open the album with some fun and familiarity before shit got real.â

Thunder Fox – Not For Sale
If you like your music smooth and funky â think Stevie Wonder, Prince or Justin Timberlake â please meet Thunder Fox. Theyâre a band from Sydney, consisting of Sam Dawes (vocals/guitar), Jesse Tachibana (trumpet/vocals/synth), Travers Keirle (saxophone/vocals) and Max Vallentine (drums). Also, new single Not For Sale marks the first contribution a bass player Casey Allan. His input is undeniable on this swinging cut.
Dawes acknowledges this in a comment about the song. He states: âNot For Sale is our introduction to Thunder Foxâs new sound. Casey, being a relatively new addition to the band at the time, brought with him a synth bass and a set of fingers carved by the Gods. Man, he had such a groove on that pile of plastic, the rest of us were floored. We wanted to write something dark, but funky (duh), and bad boy Casey had just the stuff.â
Their second single of 2021, Not For Sale is set to appear on the bandâs next album Sanctuary. Itâll be out later this year.

Carte Blanche Music Top 2021
Ahead of your favourites among this yearâs Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which Iâll publish next week, these are my personal choices from the songs that came out in 2021. This list holds only 100 tracks, but you can find all of my 998 recommendations in my container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2021.
As always, I love to share some statistics about the Carte Blanche Music Top 2021. If thereâs one â sad â common denominator to be found in this list, itâs that most of these songs have been criminally overlooked by radio stations outside the artistâs home countries. Radio playlists are growing more and more uniform, denying the diversity of the music available. Obviously, with over 60.000 new tracks added to Spotify every day the supply is kind of excessive, but more adventurous choices would be very welcome. Knowing this wonât happen, the best you can do is follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist, then Iâll keep you updated đ. This is what you can expect, based on this yearâs Top 2021:
- Mostly (young and) upcoming artists, many of whom release their music independently
- No less than 72% of the Top 2021 features female vocalists, up from 70% in our Top 2020 and 60% in the Top 2019
- We love pure pop songs, but with 40% guitar-based tracks, weâre more rock ânâ roll than average. According to Spotify Wrapped, our favourite genres last year were indie pop, modern alternative rock and dance pop, and we agree
- You can expect the best new tunes from all over the world, but even we have our preferences. We have extra warm feelings for music from countries like Australia, France, Canada and Denmark. Just so you knowâŠ
