Drug Store Romeos – What’s On Your Mind
Fiction Records is a legendary record label. They’re best-known for being the home of The Cure for over 20 years, but other acts on their roster throughout the years have been Snow Patrol, Kaiser Chiefs, Athlete, Kate Nash, Elbow, White Lies, Ian Brown, Delays and Tame Impala. And then there are Drug Store Romeos…
They’re a 3-piece from Fleet, Hampshire, formed at college by childhood friends Jonny Gilbert and Charlie Henderson. Sarah Downie replied to their ad for a bassist, but soon proved herself a better vocalist than either of the boys. Therefore, Charlie switched to the bass, while Jonny remained the band’s drummer. For them, growing up in a small suburban town inspired escapism and led them to search for music that complimented and romanticised the at times slow-paced and quite isolated existence.
In that respect, their new single What’s On Your Mind hits the bull’s eye. It’s a dreamy track at first, with lead roles for a prominent bassline and Sarah’s angelic vocals. But just before the 2’30 mark, it changes in pace. As if the trio are in a hurry to reach the level of success they deserve. I don’t think they have to worry about that…
Drug Store Romeos’ debut album The World Within Our Bedrooms will be released on 25 June.

Werner’s Weekly (week 44)
Who said rock is dead? Last week, Buffalo Tom, Johnny Marr, Nothing But Thieves, Sam Fender, The Struts and White Lies all came up with great tracks, that I gladly added to the Carte Blanche Music playlist. As you may know, it only contains the best new songs for you to discover (not only rock, by the way, but music, great music). Just follow that playlist and let me do the ‘dirty’ work. I love it!
As an example of what you’ll find there, below is my ‘best of the best’ selection: Werner’s Weekly, your compass to the music that matters. If you can spare 26 minutes, you can hear them all in full via the Werner’s Weekly player in the sidebar. Otherwise, just click the links of the tracks of your liking to find out more (including the song itself, of course).

Werner’s Weekly (week 39)
Christine & The Queens, Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians, Imagine Dragons, India.Arie, Johnny Marr, Primal Scream, Public Service Broadcasting, Rita Ora and White Lies are all wonderful artists with great new singles. All of these, and many more, have been freshly added to my constantly updated Spotify-playlist Carte Blanche Music, which contains the best new music of this year, so far. The past week, this list grew with 40 titles and now holds almost 850 tracks, good for over 50 hours of excellent music.
If that’s too much for now (no offence), I can recommend Werner’s Weekly, your compass to the music that matters. This ‘best of the best’ playlist features only 6 songs that don’t take more than 23 minutes of your time. You can listen to them via the Werner’s Weekly player in the sidebar.
