Wildcard (week 40):
Yorick van Norden – In Dreams
In times when AI generated music is flooding streaming services, analogue sounds are more welcome than ever. In Dreams by talented Dutch craftsman Yorick van Norden is a fine example. In his own words, the track is ‘a Westcoast freak-out’. It combines Byrds-like vocal harmonies with a driving groove that could have been borrowed from Santana. And how about those bongos? You’ve gotta love ‘em!
His musical authenticity is reflected in the video as well. Instead of choosing digital simulations, Van Norden opted for real fluid projections to match the song’s psychedelic elements.
In Dreams is the second single off his upcoming album Do It Now, out on 14 November. Talking about dreams: the recording of this long-player was a dream come true. It was put to tape in the legendary Abbey Road Studios.
Van Norden says about this experience: “Recording in Studio 2 with friends felt like the ultimate boyhood dream. In four days we cut fourteen songs – playing the Challen piano from A Day In The Life, the Mrs Mills piano from Penny Lane and Lady Madonna, the celeste from Pink Floyd’s Time, and the Hammond from Dark Side Of The Moon. Abbey Road honors its history while remaining one of the most state-of-the-art studios in the world. It’s the ultimate place to record music the way it was meant to be recorded.”
No wonder In Dreams sounds like a time travel back to the ‘60s and ‘70s!
In Dreams by Yorick van Norden is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. It will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Yorick van Norden – More Than Words
Dutch musician Yorick van Norden likes a challenge or two. For the first single off his debut album, Gonna Try For The Sun, he tried to write a song with as little chords as possible. Apart from the bridge, he managed to do with only two chords.
However, for the new single off his next album, More Than Words, he tried to do exactly the opposite: as many chords as possible. He ended up with a tune containing no less than 22 chords. Still, this doesn’t interfere with the track being an uplifting love song in the best British pop tradition. Jangle pop with a classic guitar sound.
That the title has been used for another classic track before, doesn’t bother Van Norden. He doesn’t mind causing some confusion from time to time.

Your Favourites (2018)
Happy New Year from ‘all of us’ (that’s me) at Carte Blanche Music! Like the past year, 2019 will undoubtedly be full of musical surprises. Especially when you’re open to let some new sounds into your life. And if you don’t have the time to find them yourself, please let me help! Simply follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist on Spotify for daily updates of great new music, or bookmark this blog.
Carte Blanche Music doesn’t intend to list all new releases. On the contrary: I make a strict selection and only give you the best new music, twice a day. Since last year, I restrict the number of recommendations to two per day: one around 9AM, and the other around 7PM (CET). This limitation provided for a 35% increase of the number of views per post in 2018.
This brings us to the question: which of my recommendations have been viewed the most throughout the year? In other words: what are your favourites of 2018? The answer is: a totally different set of songs than my year-end list, the Carte Blanche Music Top 2018 😉 and that’s totally fine!
Just a few statistics to kick things off:
- Your Favourites (2018) contain nine songs that were in Your Favourites (2017) already, and apparently stuck with you
- The full Top 3 of your list contains Dutch artists (in total, there are 21 tracks by acts from the Netherlands. Dutch fans are the best)
- 36% of the visitors are Dutch (like myself… Hi mom!)
- 19% of the visitors are Americans, 16% are from the UK; a total of 87 nationalities have come by in 2018 (dank je wel, thanks, merci, obrigado, danke schön, etc.!)
- 26% of all traffic comes from direct searches for specific titles, so Carte Blanche Music also seems to have an archive function
- Other important referrers are Facebook (22%), and Twitter (13%)
- Impressive: the relatively high position of Mokono’s debut single Signs, the final Carte Blanche Music Wildcard of 2018
Okay, I can hear you thinking: ‘Don’t bore us, get to the chorus’, so here they are… Just two more things: all of these great songs (plus 1.000 more) are in my Carte Blanche Music 2018 playlist, and the links below direct you to my original recommendations for more information. Now, enjoy the music! Read More →
Your favourites (June 2018)
In Western Europe, the month of June was sunnier and dryer than ever before. But the Carte Blanche Music stats reveal that didn’t hurt your hunger for new music.
The Top 10 most read blogs contains artists that range from extremely young and upcoming (10-year-old eMMa) to older and well-known (Elvis Costello). Eight of the ten tracks are by emerging artists though.
Dutchman Yorick van Norden tops this chart, and elsewhere, we find acts from Spain, the United States, Norway, Australia, Great Britain and even Poland.
English is the most common language of course, but I’m thrilled the list also features songs with lyrics in Swedish and Polish. Musically, there is a great variety as well.
These were your ten favourites in June:
- Yorick van Norden – More Than Words
- Maicø – Hey Hey
- Lead Pony – Soul Sucker
- Your.Regular.Boy. – Get Down Make Love
- Buika – Deadbeat
- eMMa – Fått Deg På Hjernen
- Kira Puru – Molotov
- whenyoung – Heaven On Earth
- Dawid Podsiadło – Małomiasteczkowy
- Elvis Costello (feat. The Roots) – Someone Else’s Heart
All of the above, and many more, can be found in my 2018 container playlist Carte Blanche Music, that is constantly updated. It includes the (almost 600) best new tracks of the year so far, providing you with nearly 35 hours of sheer joy. If you agree, you’re very welcome to subscribe and/or share. Enjoy and spread the music!
Werner’s Weekly (week 26)
Moby, Panic! At The Disco, Paul McCartney and Years & Years are only a few of the 20 acts whose new single I added to my 2018 container playlist Carte Blanche Music last week. A list that doesn’t pretend to contain all the new releases, but only the best (if you like songs with a head and a tail and a melody in between).
For Werner’s Weekly, your compass to the music that matters, I narrow that down even more, so that only the very best tracks remain. And that’s what you see below. Click the links to find out more about each song and while you’re at it, listen to them all via the Werner’s Weekly player in the sidebar!
- Shanguy – King Of The Jungle (Wildcard this week)
- Blackbook – Love Is A Crime (Wildcard last week)
- blackwave. – Whasgood?!
- Dawid Podsiadło – Małomiasteczkowy
- Picture This – When We Were Young
- Yorick van Norden – More Than Words
