Yukon Blonde – You Were Mine
Canadian indie rock outfit Yukon Blonde are about to release their fifth studio album. Vindicator will be out on 13 November. You Were Mine is the latest single to be put out ahead of it.
A song with two faces, it starts with a driving drum beat and lyrics that bring Wide Open Space by Mansun to mind (which is never a bad thing). After a minute however, the tempo is halved and psychedelic elements are brought in. The last two minutes, the band put the pedal to the metal again. Quickly revolving piano notes and hi-hats create the impression of even more speed (in more ways than one).
Although it’s way less eclectic than Tame Impala’s Let It Happen, I hear the same kind of atmosphere in it.

Wildcard (week 22):
Yukon Blonde – Too Close To Love
Yukon Blonde hasn’t been Yukon Blonde all the time. In 2005, they started as Alphababy. After two EP under that moniker, they changed their name to Yukon Blonde in 2009. The band is Canadian five-piece, who specialize in jangly indie pop/rock. However, their latest four singles, all of which will probably be featured on their next album Critical Hit (due for 22 June), have a more poppy sound. The reason is clear: the album was produced by Tony Hoffer (who worked with Air, Beck, The Kooks and zillions more).
Opening with pulsating synths, Yukon Blonde’s latest single Too Close To Love ticks all the right boxes, as far as I’m concerned. It even echoes Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, which can’t be wrong. The song, inspired by Milan Kundera’s ‘The Unbearable Lightness Of Being’, is this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This means the song has the most prominent place on this blog for a full seven days. That should give you more than enough time to fall in love with it, like I did.

The Zolas – Energy Czar
Zachary Gray and Tom Dobrzanski were part of Canadian rock band Lotus Child from 2003 to 2008, before starting their own project. The Zolas are a based in Vancouver. In 2020, the band consists of Gray (vocals, guitar), Cody Hiles (drums) and Dwight Abell (bass).
Two years after the band’s fun cover of the Travelling Wilburys’ Handle With Care (with Yukon Blonde), The Zolas have a new single out. As the title suggests, Energy Czar is an energetic, driving song, made for road trip playlists. The band call it ‘a four-minute moment where you’re allowed to feel all the fun narcissism and self-loathing that comes with being a human being in the 21st century’.
Energy Czar is the first single to be shared from their forthcoming new album Come Back To Life. “We thought it was hilarious to make a Britpop record at a time when nobody but us is listening to that”, says Gray.
