Lucius – Man In My Radio
Lucius may not have released new music for about two years, but they haven’t exactly sat still. Through the month of July, they hosted a four-part livestream series called Turning It Around. It featured musician friends like Brandi Carlile, Sheryl Crow, and Courtney Barnett. These performances raised over $70,000 for a handful of their beloved local small businesses in Los Angeles.
The band just put out a vinyl reissue of their 2013 debut studio album Wildewoman. It comes with a free download of a previously unreleased track, recorded during the sessions for that album. Man In My Radio is brimming with energy, and includes a banjo, frantic guitar lines and fast-paced high hats.
Talking about Man In My Radio, Lucius explain: “We were living in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn and had just built a little studio in our apartment. One that would become the home for the first recordings of Wildewoman. As we started writing and exploring the recording process, every so often we had some powerful radio signals coming through the speakers. Every time we were onto something, the same man’s voice would start speaking through the radio. He started to make it impossible to concentrate on anyone but him. He made it into our daily lives, and eventually, into a song.”

Grace Potter (feat. Lucius) – Back To Me
Grace Potter’s musical career spans almost two decades. She performed with acts as varied as Kenny Chesney, Flaming Lips, and the Grateful Dead and released her only solo album Midnight in 2015. But due to major changes in her life (a break-up, a new-found love and her first child), she nearly quit making music. The songs the now 36-year-old American singer wrote since then were meant as therapy, not to be released.
However, singing to her baby brought back her sense of purpose, and she decided to record the songs anyway. They were produced by her current partner Eric Valentine. He previously worked with the likes of Third Eye Blind, Smash Mouth, Queens Of The Stone Age, Good Charlotte, and The Wombats.
Potter’s new album Daylight will be out on 25 October. It’s preceded by a great new single: Back To Me. Whether you like soul, country or gospel, this is a song for you. It features additional vocals by Lucius vocalists Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe. They contributed to four songs on Daylight. The album also features Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench.

Wildcard (week 28):
Grace Potter – Good Time
American singer-songwriter Grace Potter took four years to come up with a worthy follow-up to her 2x Grammy-nominated album Daylight. The new long-player, her third, is titled Mother Road and will come out on 18 August. Just like it’s predecessor, it was produced by her current partner Eric Valentine. He worked with the likes of Third Eye Blind, Smash Mouth, Queens Of The Stone Age, Good Charlotte and The Wombats before.
If that wasn’t enough name-dropping, the album features contributions from a host of top-of-the-bill musicians. How about guitarist Nick Bockrath, bassist Tim Deaux, drummer Matt Musty, pedal steel guitarist Dan Kalisher and keyboardist Benmont Tench? They drenched the 10 original songs in soulful rock, roots, funk, country, and R&B.
Are you a fan of Sheryl Crow and do you still listen to Rocks by Primal Scream and Take Your Mama by Scissor Sisters on repeat? Make sure not to miss out on Grace Potter’s new single Good Time then. It melts all of the ingredients above into an anthemic new, groovy tune.
Now a 40-year-old, she says about her latest track: “When I was writing Good Time, I was thinking about all the times when there were no boundaries between me and the world at large. As you get older, there’s this expectation that you need to fall in line, that you can’t keep living a fantasy your whole life. But I don’t know about that – maybe we can.”
Good Time by Grace Potter is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means it’ll be featured prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Your ‘All-Time’ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming – often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which I’ll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesn’t mean the blog is closing down. It’ll continue to be the home of my ‘best of’ collection (Werner’s Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, I’ll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your ‘All-Time’ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. You’ll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If you’re an artist, don’t be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprised…
Enjoy and thanks for joining the ride so far. Follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist (click ‘♥’ in Spotify) for many more recommendations to come!
